Posting here for visibility: The whole thing with elephant graveyards is actually true...sort of. Elephants DO congregate in certain areas to die, but the reason is far more practical. Elephants have six set of teeth that they gradually wear through during their lives. When they get old and their final set are worn down, they cannot eat the tough plants that make up their usual diet, so they travel to estuaries and swamplands like Ngorogoro crater, where soft marsh plants are abundant enough to sustain them. So these places effectively become "elephant retirement homes" where they eventually die.

For the plague of Madness, i feel the reason Spear was so scared of the Argentinosaurus was due to the fact the thing looked dead... like, literally dead. Something that shouldn't be able to walk, let alone hunt like a rabid beast. Spear is a hunter, he has seen dead animals and how they look. So for him this was unatural, when something is killed, it falls and rots. This was rotten like any other beast, but kept on hunting. Something that in his experience, cannot be.

A late addition, but something that was brought to my attention by the KZfaqr The Unnatural History Channel's Primal video that seems to lean into the theory that the Plague is something supernatural instead of a disease, and I feel I should spread it around since, just like me, no one else seems go have noticed. That dinosaur is hollow inside. Look at those shots that reveal its interior, there's no muscle or organs, most of it's literally just skin over bones. I think it didn't really click with me because I'm too used to goreless damage from cartoons, but Primal isn't a show where we can use that excuse.

One thing you missed about the Plague of madness is how the eye change into chaos when it takes hold and reverts to normal when the host dies. Maybe the “plague” is more like a curse that latches onto one host at a time.

The plague seems to me like a very extreme version of rabies. The infected dinosaur tries to drink water, it vomits. Rabies victims often develop hydrophobia, making it impossible to swallow water. Both diseases cause the victim to salivate excessively, pant for breath, lose coordination, and even bite others to transfer the disease. Rabies, however, does not cause the victim's flesh to rot off, and they're a lot less coordinated and aggressive than the infected dinosaur.
@aliahpersonous2893
@aliahpersonous2893 2 жыл бұрын
I’m thinking the plague could be a little magical, or maybe like the infection is so aggressive, it like extends the “life” of the victim. Like, kinda, it starts off rabies but then it gets so severe that the victim sorta dies after it gets to the point of vomiting blood (vomiting that much blood & having bubbly skin is probably very bad). - But the infection keeps the victims corpse moving as it rots, and it’s only goal is to continue existing, so it hunts down the first things it sees, regardless of the harm done to the body.

Yea, a common side effect of rabies is that it constricts the throat muscles making it so that the infected host physically cannot swallow so it has no choice but to drool the saliva and can’t swallow water or food!

Something I feel is missed about the Alpha Rex and her pack is that... the rest of the pack are the Alpha's young and the reason why they went after Spear's family and Fang's young is they were soft targets, _hunting practice if you will._ It isn't unheard of for mother predators such as cheetahs to bring home scared but unharmed young of their prey for their cubs to chase and practice hunting and that was essentially what was happening. I little theory for the night feeder original design is we see the compy(small theropod) constantly feeding on flies in the night feeder episode. There’s also a bunch of flies shown around the corpses of the night feeders victims. Also to add the night feeder is never shown to eat it’s prey. Just completely rip them apart. So if the compy transforms during the night,mauls anything near it and creates a buffet of flies for itself in the morning. Now we can use that to see the original design might have been a frog. Also known for lapping up flies. Also explains the fat,stocky build of the original design.
@shagarumedic
@shagarumedic 2 жыл бұрын
I’d like to think that the compy isn’t the night feeder in the literal sense, instead representing the paranoia of spear and fang by having them be so taken aback by this tiny harmless creature. The fly might play into it too. The compy is the night feeder and the fly is spear and fang, representing how the night feeder is closing in on them by the moment (also foreshadowed by the similarity between the appearance of the compy and the night feeder).

The Nightfeeder Black Substance theory makes a lot of sense for the very two reasons why the Nightfeeder scared me so much upon first watching it. One, the Nightfeeder is so confident in its killing ability that it literally charges headfirst into a triceratops herd phalanx and actually SUCCEEDS. Two, it never just killed its prey, but rather seemed to just completely PULVERIZE it. No predator on Earth would ever be so bold as to attack the center of a large herbivore herd, and no Terran predator could EVER just CASUALLY strike a triceratops so hard, that it basically just exploded into chunky salsa.

@@Mate397 Thanks, I thought long and hard on that one though XD for reals though his theory has absolutely no grounds as there was no indication at all that it was a parasite. The curse theory has some credibility as it's more likely a curse than a viral infection due to the sheer supernatural resilience the infected dinosaur has (even by zombie standards) and the other fact of nothing else becoming infected even after being bitten. Notice how much punishment the sauropod took and then look how easily the initial host was killed. It looks far more like a curse was wanting to find a stronger host than anything biological.

I think knowing/learning the origin of the Madness Plague would weaken the horror aspect. Part of the horror of ep 7 comes from the pivot from the happy scene to an all out massacre, all while we know the zombie dinosaur is doing it all against its will. I think the fact that its cause is unexplained makes it feel like the madness plague could happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time, which is WAY more horrifying than a nailed down explanation. I would love to know what caused it, but I also love the sheer shock and horror that whole episode brings when you can’t explain what happened to the dinosaur, you can only run from it.

Also, Jack kinda killed humans before. Not flesh and blood but still, the Lava Monster was a human, and the way he freed him was trough giving him a death of honor in combat. In all honestly I couldn't come to terms with the fact everything got ditched for Jack and Ashi. Since I didn't like Ashi that much as a character, I felt like a lot of memorable characters I was hoping would make a proper return were kinda brushed to the side. I watched Samurai Jack with my father when I was really young, so there are certain characters from the show I instinctively associate with childhood and good memories. In that sense I am inclined to feel a certain way about gaps in the story. Still, can't really blame the writers for changing things up. Season 5 can't really be put alongside the first 4 entirely.

@@sticlavoda5632 Ashi, I couldn't remember her name. I liked her. It made sense that Aku would have a cult or two dedicated to him and her being a daughter of Aku has a nice irony to it. It reminded me of the Greek myths of one chief god being usurped by their children, first Cronus then Zeus. The way Jack slowly brought Ashi over to his side was touching. I wish that in the end, they hadn't undone the timeline that Aku controlled, just perhaps make it an alternative timeline with Aku defeated or something. It would have allowed all of Jack's sacrifices and friends to mean something beyond escaping back to the past. It undermines all the times that Jack sacrificed a chance to go back in time in order to help people of the future, like in the Shaolin Temple episode. By undoing that timeline entirely, it makes Jack's self-sacrificial nature into the objectively wrong choice.

One thing that NO ONE ELSE SEEMS TO GET, is that many of the aspects of Primal take influence in small ways from works like Conan The Barbarian and other Sword and Sorcery works, as many Sword and Sorcery series often have prehistoric or fantastical beasts and monsters as well, it's only a matter of time till we get Season 2 and more of this will be more blatant with it, as we were given a small snippet of human(or possibly non-human) civilization in the revelation of Season's 1 finale.

I really liked the wild dogs, actually. As they said in the video their character design is fantastic, and the smooth, sinuous way that they stalk the heroes, along with the musical cues accompanying them, made them stand out to me. Plus, I liked the fact that even though the dogs seem like a puny and underwhelming threat compared to some of the crazy shit Spear and Fang had battled by that point, the way they had Spear on the ropes by taking advantage of their numerical advantage was a good reminder that smaller beasts are not to be underestimated.

One of the reasons we domesticated dogs is that we have quite a lot in common. They are one of the few things to be able to keep up with us in endurance. But more than that they, like us, instinctively fight aggressively as a group. So well that we can even do it together. Wolves and dogs are by now means weak, but together they can hit way, way above their weight class.

I would also like to add, spears intelligence is immensely shown there. He made a thing to carry the dinosaur when he’s never had to do anything like that before. All in all, spear is very intelligent, more than a “normal caveman” would have been at that time.

I always find that the snakes were symbolic--particularly envy. It was a reflection of their mere differences getting used to each other, but as the irony of the snake carcass, it was also their bond that helped them survive the waterfall (which is another symbol of their contempt for each other's differences, as well as a physical obstacle).
@EarlofSedgewick
@EarlofSedgewick 2 жыл бұрын
The Plague of Madness and the look on Spear's face as the Argentinosaur is consumed by the volcanic fires is all a cautionary tale of Spear's actions. Spear at the start of the season is consumed by rage at the loss of his family to seemingly evil entities, agents of hatred, spite and cruelty. He fights back against these 'monsters' by harnessing his primal savagery, and succeeds. When he meets Fang, he finds a kindred spirit, although they butt heads over how to do things, and who is more important. Over the course of the first half of the season, Spear and Fang contend with a hostile world by continuing to tap into their rage and savagery; but, crucially they also develop bonds of platonic care and love for one another. They are willing to sacrifice each other's personal safety to maintain the safety of the other. This is what soldiers refer to as fraternity, morale, esprit de corps - that they would put their own life on the line to try to save the life of their friend, of their brother. All aspects of ego, ideas of revenge and dreams of justice are put aside to love through the ones who are in their tribe. What is so horrific about the Plague of Madness is that it is, in action, very parallel to Spear and Fang's own journey and actions. An evil and random agent of evil comes out of nowhere to infect its aggression into the behaviours of peaceful beings. It is no mistake that both the infecting animal and the infected animal are both vegetarians. The plague represents indiscriminate hostility, of vengeance upon a cruel world that never ends, without a limit of what is enough. This rage consumes the argentinosaur, literally and figuratively as it destroys everyone it ever loved and could love, and then proceeds to destroy itself in its single-minded pursuit of destroying anything and everything that it sees. Spear and Fang could have easily slid into this same trap, where instead of turning their attention to caring for one another as they move through the land, they succumb to the rage that they still feel about the loss of their families to a cruel world. This use of a zombified type antagonist to represent human ego at its most dangerous, violent and inhuman point is the norm for stories of this genre. Most blatant is the wonderful film 28 Days Later, which is a bit on the nose with naming the virus 'Rage'. It is a typical fear of humans that they will come across a person who simply doesn't care about anything in the world, except the destruction of anyone it comes across. This is a real threat and occurs in wars where the point of the war and the removal of the things in life that make it worth living are eroded to the point of complete evisceration. Movies like Apocalypse Now (based on Heart of Darkness) explore this idea, although not to the primal horror degree of zombies. So, when Spear sees the argentinosaur literally incinerate itself in its blind pursuit of aggression and rage, he is simultaneously deeply saddened by what the pain of the this thing that has become a monster and is figuratively being engulfed and turned into nothingness in front of him, and he is crucially highly sympathetic towards the monster. He knows the rage he felt when his family were massacred in front of him, and he recognizes his rage within the burning monster. He knows how he might have been consumed the same way if he had not found Fang and developed that fraternal love, and found beauty and kindness still in the world. It is not important where the plague came from, although it could make for some fascinating story-telling if they can spin an elegant enough tale. But what makes the plague so frightening is that it can come from nowhere. People can sometimes break without you knowing it, and they no longer can be reached by reason or love, or at least this is a fear that is so deeply engrained in our psyches that it presumably has happened enough in the past to have made that lasting impression without needing to study it. It is very interesting that one can experience fear without being able to necessarily articulate why the fear is there. Wonderful pieces of art like Primal can help us examine these things. Food for thought: Primal strips away the dialogue and communicates solely through music, primal grunting, facial expressions, etc. What does this tell us about how we communicate with each other? How might relying solely on words (like in social media, web-forums, etc) fall short in communicating the human context of people's points of views? PS: I used to HATE writing essays, but now I love that I understand how they work so that I can communicate effectively. They are a tool to be wielded, not a chore to be lamented.

The hunters herd mammoths to a cliff edge and force them to jump, the hunters then pick apart the carcasses for meat, skin, and bones to use later. Seeing the design of the night feeder in the animatic had me stumpt but then I a prehistoric animal that it sort of resembled: it looked like one of those Giant prehistoric sloths that if I remember correctly sometimes looked for food on the ground with their huge crawls

32:00 "Ight, come on boys. Death Awaits us." 20 minutes later "Guess I'll die." *Several Minecraft Death Sounds* Okay all jokes aside, 52:42 looks Alien, and as we know in some alien movies the Aliens either want to take over the world, have things as Hosts, or Just Want to Kill Everything in Sight. Who else thinks this is an Alien Concept?

My theory on how the plague may return: Spear and Fang return to the Argentinosaur field, but find no corpses, instead they hear a horrifying yet familiar roar in the distance, Spear climbs up a tree and sees several Zombie Argentinosaurs roaming around, having been reanimated by the plague, now crazed and killing everything that moves, the rest of the episode would be about the duo trying to remain hidden while trying to escape the area without being spotted by one of them, which would eventually lead to the entire horde being alerted to their presence.

That's definitely possible, especially after the afflicted one puked literal GALLONS of infected blood into the watering hole. At least one animal is gonna have taken a sip without first taking a sniff. That or a scavenger animal like a rat or vulture taking a bite of the Pachycephalasaurus that bit the Argentinosaurus, then spreading from there.

Yes. We could even see some sort of altruism from Spear and Fang, with them leading the animals to the volcanic area to "kill it with fire!" again.

Surprise you two didn't put the Korgoth of Barbaria in there. It's a animation pilot Tartakovsky had work as animation director. Feature a barbarian man survive in world of incredible violence.

I think the Nightfeeder episode is also significant because it shows Spear learning how to make fire using flint, which is way easier and faster than rubbing sticks together, which allowed him to start enough fires for him to kill the Nightfeeder

Samurai Jack has a lot of connections just from references. The powerpuff girls, Dexter’s Lab, Lone wolf and Cub, etc. Usually I don’t take them seriously but they are fun to think about.

I personaly belive that the black goo is the Night Feeder's sweat as when we are it it runs at high speed instantly slashing animals,and when it transforms back it moves slowly only using its thoung to catch flies

Night feeder is totally a reference to the Evil Dead series by Sam Raimi ,at least stylistically-the film series used the flying-through-the-woods-from-killers-perspective to save budget on depicting what was supposed to be an ineffable horror. It became an iconic piece of the series.

While the thought of a tar pit full of moonlight-powered psycho juice is probably the best setup for an absolute slaughter of an episode, I feel like maybe the Night Feeder is a bit more entwined with the substance than simply being coated in it accidentally. Where does it disappear to when the morning comes, if it's as sticky as Fang's attack lets us believe? I think, and I'm just spitballing here, maybe this creature IS the origin of this mysterious substance. Hear me out: The creature secretes the substance under the guise of night, evolutionarily inclined to do so based on it's diet, luring in flies to eat with a field of carcasses. It sheds the substance after dawn breaks and the effects are reversed (Perhaps its longevity is directly tied to sunlight, like the evaporation of water drying it out or something along the lines.) The Ape-Men likely discovered the Feeder long ago and hunt it for sport or, more likely, to harvest whatever gland produces this tarry super-serum and utilize it in their -WWE- brutal death matches.
