A companion video to A Gentleman's Valet.From the book-
The Unplugged Woodshop by Tom Fidgen. 2012-The Taunton Press
In this video I create full scale drawings and templates for the feet of the Valet project. I decided to use 2-in. thick lacewood and needed to dimension is before tracing the pattern and sawing the rough shapes. I used my Gramercy Tools bow-saw, to rough saw the foot shape and refined the curves with a series of files and rasps.
For more information on this and other hand crafted projects, visit my website at www.theUnpluggedWoodshop.com or pick up my book, The Unplugged Woodshop for detailed plans, cut lists and full instructions on how you can build your own Valet.
Thanks for watching!

Thanks Linn, this was the first video I shot for my last book back in 2011. In the chapter sequence, this project became the 2nd to last, so I've been waiting patiently to release this series. Funny how that works~

Wow. I am so excited. This is one of the projects I want to build. But first I have to make the Miter shooting board. And find the right wood for this project. I have seen that you are coming to Germany. I will be in vacation at that time. So I can´t come to the course by Dictum. Munich is a wonderful place. There are plenty of music live clubs in Munich. ;) Have a nice Time there. I hope you come again. Best wishes. Mike

Thanks Mike, indeed I am very much looking forward to visiting Munich. Many we'll catch you on the next visit? As for the Valet, it's a great little project with lots of techniques. I'll be posting some info regarding the design and wood choices later this week. Follow by blog for details. all the best~

Two things Tom: 1. In addition to the obvious appeal of your woodworking technique and skill, I love your music. I can only speak for myself, but I would not think it a shameless plug if you included where we could find this music. It's really not like anything I've listened to before. 2. This is a personal preference...I've acquired two spoke shaves and have yet to work on a piece for which these would be the preferred smoothing method. While I know you're trying to keep each episode short, I'd love to have seen spoke shave techniques that got edited out. There's an abundance of planing videos, but very little on these tools. The most helpful was one by Garrett Hack, but watching him is like a Michael Jordan video on how to dunk. I experienced more awe than insight. Perhaps yours would be no different, but I'd like to have seen that. All the best Tom!

Thanks Steven- you'll find some of my music on iTunes as well as Spotify...you can also order CD's from the Unplugged Woodshop website. Here's a link: theunpluggedwoodshop.myshopify.com/collections/books As for a spokeshave video, that's a good idea. I'll put it on my list~; ) all the best-

Just watched all 10 videos on this project. Crafting of an order beyond anything else I have found on KZfaq. I may be bonkers but I was reminded of a Japanese Tea Ceremony!!! Such an eye for detail and patience throughout the process. Truly a journey worth making and the finished product was pretty darn good to. I'm just starting out on my hand woodworking journey and was amazed at the variety of tools available to carry out some of the specific tasks. Do you make your own tools as well? Tom my sincerest thanks for posting these video clips.

I don't think you're bonkers. Last night I read a book on Japanese temple construction. This video reminded me of Japanese temples and the tea ceremony, too.

Dude you did all that shaping by hand? I would be online buying a spindle sander inside of 5 minutes.... Sweet work!

BoxedGod- for sure, everything is done by hand. It looks like more work than it is. A few big cuts with a handsaw, followed by the bow-saw, and then some spokeshave work and files and rasps. It sounds like a lot but wasn't bad at all. A quick days work and the feet were shaped. Besides, I'm never in a hurry! all the best and thanks for the comments~

Hi Tom big fan of all your videos...now I know what you do takes years of patience and studying but I would like some advice for a novice. ...what are the vital tools to get stared on some projects...thankyou a from a fello brit

Graham, A complete tool list here would be impossible, but a decent start? a hand/panel saw to break down stock into rough size. Two hacksaws for joinery, a Jack plane and block plane, and a few assorted chisel sizes would be a good beginning. Check out my website and books for more information on this. All the best- PS. I'm Canadian-; )

hello Tom, I'm from Brazil, I'm also a carpenter. I admire your final project, but the use of power tools and machinery, would not make things easier?
@theUnpluggedWoodshop
@theUnpluggedWoodshop 10 жыл бұрын
Marco, thanks for the comments and question. Indeed power tools would certainly change the process, but hand work is something I truly enjoy. The journey is the destination, and mine is working with my hands. It may not be for everyone, but it's the path I chose for me. All the best and thanks again for the interest~

Its the process and the journey not the end result. When you work with hand tools it connects you with the pre power tools era which is really something special.

Great eye ! Here ( in Canada ) they had it labelled as Australian Lacewood. Not sure if it's the same or not. As I worked it, I often thought it looked like pink oak. Very brittle and quit dusty to work- not sure if it's all like that or just this plank. all the best~

Tom Fidgen Lacewood is quite dusty - one of the pitfalls of the product, unfortunately. Takes a finish beautifully. I made the riser of a 3 piece recurve bow out of Lacewood, the dust was a killer! Love your work!
