Kedleston Hall was the vision of Sir Nathaniel Curzon. Alan Titchmarsh visits the house to see Nathaniel's vision for himself and inspects the secret original architectural plans. This is also the story of two very different Curzon men. One was a visionary patron of the arts. The other was a colonial ruler who subjugated India as its unwelcome Viceroy.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think this is my favorite home. Love tht he and his wife grew and learned about saving the animals and starting the conservation of them instead of the hunting! Live and learn !!!Also so sad for Kipling 🙏🏼 What I love abt these series, is tht the camera is showing us everything, not just the presenters. Very well done shows ✨✨✨

This house was the model for the Viceroy of India's Palace in Calcutta, that became the State Governor's Residence - the 'Raj Bhavan' - after India's capital was moved to Delhi. The Raj Bhavan follows the same basic design, but has 4 complete wings not two. It is also about 6 times the size of Kedleston in terms of floor area, has 5 storeys and a basement, and inside, is much grander in scale. The basement is large enough, in fact, that staff need bicycles to 'travel' through it. I should know - I've visited Kedleston as a tourist, and as a boy lived in the Calcutta Raj Bhavan when my father officiated briefly as Governor.

A beautifully done documentary... there is one passage that stuck with me, regarding Curzon's office in India through a very severe famine. The attitude then, and I know this from the archives of my own family (views I do not share, only relate) that, well, they were only little brown things who wore odd hats. They simply didn't count. We must all remember, and I'm 100% guilty as charged, that it was slave labour and the backs of the innocent upon which empires are built, and which my privileged birth was made possible. It holds very true of the British Empire which, in 1900, covered one quarter of the Earth's population, second only to China, an empire upon which the sun never set.

@arslongavitabrevis5136 That's not true. Tigers are protected and there are many people in high places who are involved in protecting and the preservation of animal habitats . And the world we live in now we can expose and shame anyone who goes trophy hunting magestic animals. Because we all know that their is no reason what so ever to hunt such magestic creatures for the rich peoples own vanity and that the animal pelts look much more beautiful on the animals and not on some rich persons floor , wall or coat .. we have made so many advancements in materials that we don't need to any materials from animals. We banned the sale of ivory and we have even made more humane choices as to how the animals that are a food source are treated in a humane way. We don't do Foie Gras be cause it is cruel and we have found ways to safely remove the eggs of sturgeon without having to sacrifice their lives. We as humans are learning to treat our planet better and to be better shepherds to our animal kingdom and I'm here for it by not being judgemental of our past ideas and history I'm seeing it as a learning curve to be better and to leave our mark on history as being the guardians righted the wrongs and who left a better world for those in the future who will inherent the world we have left for them.

One thing not mentioned, and I am curious, are there any Curzons' alive. Who owns the home now? Was the home handed down through the descendants? There were 3 children mentioned.

There is an excellent book called The Viceroys Daughters (there were 3...). Fascinating, revealing, and doesnt pull any punches. Their father was not a great Dad, (or human imho). But its a great read!

Music and sound engineers seem to dominate every production nowadays. The audio basics, like being able to hear the host talking, has taken a back seat. I’m so sick of the melodrama and noise.🙂

Alan Tits-Marsh is really very good at this sort of thing. A complete natural. He is to this sort of documentary what Fiona Bruce is to the Antiques Roadshow.

Kedleston has always been my favorite English Country House. Not that I’ve ever been to England, yet, but I’ve always been very interested in them. For myself, I would choose a Georgian vicarage, roomy but not huge. Most of us wouldn’t want those ceremonial spaces in the bigger homes, except maybe ambassadors, but they have to live in cities.

I can't imagine how British people r so condescending to the USA for the horrors we committed when they did much worse all around the world & India is still trying to recover from the horrors committed by great Britain & they never paid for.

I wouldn't say they were worse. But the part about paying back, yes. Today consumers wan't things so cheap, that a lot of people are earning so little. I'm all for knowing the history of the world, but maybe people should wake up to what is still going on, and stop blaiming who were worst.

I also agree with u that as our countries r consumers & want everything cheap we r basically guilty of slavery of other types in the countries making our stuff & not even getting paid a living wage
