Hi Matteo, Thank you very much for this interesting video! I found it very insightful. I found it particular interesting how you interpreted the obstacles of German resistance in the beginning of the video in contrast to the French resistance and other countries with strong resistance movements. Coming from a German perspective, I haven’t thought about this aspect so far. I find it very comprehensible how you explain that many non-German resistance movements went to repel against the foreign German invader and how, in contrast, Germans, because of their fear to be considered as traitors and their nationalist sense of belonging might therefore have been hesitant to join resistance movements and fight for their ideas and against their “own country”. In general, I really like the structure of your short video and your focus and examples of the three main resistance groups of the workers, youth and Jews. This is a very important emphasis. Until today, in Germany, the 20 July Stauffenberg plot is still considered as one of the main events of German resistance. However, in fact Stauffenberg was a Nazi who wanted to overturn Hitler’s power, but not the nationalist socialist regime. Other examples of anti-Nazi resistance are often ignored and need to be pointed out as in your video. I really liked that you highlighted the Rosenstraße protest - a very brave act of resistance of women. Now, I want to come to some comments and criticism ;): In your video, you state that the Dutch anarchist, Marinus van der Lubbe, was responsible for the burning of the Reichstag. However, this “solo-perpetrator”-theory is highly debated. Just recently, there was found a document that suggest involvement of Nazis themselves in the burning of the parliament. www.sueddeutsche.de/politik/reichstagsbrand-nationalsozialismus-lubbe-1.4541532 My biggest concern is about your conclusion: I agree that there have been many forms of German resistance against Nazi Germany. However, I have the feeling that you tend to exaggerate the number and significance of German resistance (“From passive non-Nazis to active resistance fighters, there was a broad front of opponents in Germany, (…) ” 14:19). I find this somehow problematic because this reproduces the idea of many Germans being involved in forms of resistance that nowadays is very widespread in the remembrance of Germans - which in fact wasn’t the case. There is one book I highly recommend on this issue: “Grandpa wasn’t a Nazi” of Harald Welzer. Unfortunately, there is no translation, but Welzer published a smaller article in English. You can find the PDF on the internet. Moreover, at the end you make it sound a little as if it was the Nazi government who manipulated the population ideologically and therefore, there wasn’t a big resistance movement (“In fact, the Nazis succeeded in making the German public believe that to be against the Third Reich was to be against the German people” 14:28). In contrast, I believe that antisemitic, racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. ideologies were the ideological fundament of the majority of the German population. The Nazis didn’t have to manipulate the German population, but they themselves believed and performed the “Volksgemeinschaft” (the German believe of a “pure” German national community) and therefore fought for Nazi Germany until the defeat instead of joining the resistance. Les allemands, un peuple qui a lutté contre le nazisme, merci, de nous "raconter" cette face cachée de tout un peuple. BRAVO pour votre travail fouillé, et ces repaires culturels qui m'ont beaucoup intéressée !

Merci pour avoir traité ce sujet, souvent lors de discussions avec des collègues ou autres personnes j'ai déjà eu l'occasion d'expliquer cette résistance allemande, beaucoup d'ignorants pensant que les allemands étaient un bloc uniforme sans pensée propre. Sinon j'ai énormément apprécié le roman de Hans Fellada "seul dans Berlin", très beau livre qui raconte cette résistance à petite échelle, courageuse mais vaine face à la machine de l'état Nazi.

Merci pour cette vidéo ! J'ai beaucoup appris par la lecture de "Ces Allemands qui ont défié Hitler" de Gilbert Badia. Mais tout le monde ne lit pas des livres d'histoire... La vidéo, l'image sont plus prisées, et même si c'est de la vulgarisation, ça conscientise. J'ai trouvé passionnant de voir la série allemande en 3 parties "Generation War". Ça mettait en scène la génération des jeunes de 20 ans envoyés à la guerre en 1939 qui n'avaient pas voté pour le parti nazi en 1933. Merci aussi d'évoquer l'engagement des Allemands dans la guerre et la révolution espagnoles. J'aime et j'encourage tout ce qui fissure la pensée trop monolithique sur l'histoire, les peuples et les individus. Encouragements pour la suite !

Mille fois merci pour cette contribution à la compréhension du passé et j’ose même dire à l’amitié franco-allemande ! J’espère que tu as compris le long commentaire en anglais de robsti - je suis d’accord avec lui quand il dit que tu exagères un peu la quantité de gens participant à la résistance, ce n’était que quelques 0,xy pour-cent. Quoi qu’il en soit, ton interprétation ou bien ta conclusion par rapport aux raisons paraît logique.
