Whilst the Japanese printmaker Hokusai is best known for his masterpiece "Under the Wave off Kanagawa", dig a little deeper and you'll find his wonderfully eerie ghost illustrations. Also known as yokai, his monster prints have been plucked from Japanese folklore.
In his old age, Hokusai made a print series called One Hundred Ghost Stories. His five images have their own legend to accompany them. From the story of Oiwa, a possessed lantern who haunts her treacherous husband. To the Kohada Koheiji, a vengeful corpse that peers over the curtain to watch you sleep.
Where do these monsters come from? And why was Hokusai so fixated by Ghost stories? All this and more, as we step into the ghoulish art of supernatural Japan.
I enjoyed this one, and tried a bunch of new things too! Thank you all for 535k subscribers :)

A funny thing about the great wave print: there's a pretty big mistake in almost all its representations. If you look at the boat in the back, the one near mount Fuji, you will see the part at the front is dark grey, while the same part on the front boat is white. This is basically a mistake in the woodblocks. At one point, either Hokusai or other printmakers put this part of the boat on the same layer as the sky layer, giving it the same dark grey as the sky. It's a detail you can't miss once you know it.

Yama isn't always seen as evil. He's in many traditions an administrator of the afterworld. A more no nonsense version of the god Hades in some aspect. Sometimes there's versions where he's helped by two spirits. One in dark robes, one in white. These two escort the spirit to appear before Yama to be judged. Sometimes these two would recount the deeds of the dead for Yama to hear, or in some versions they'd add additional info to the circumstances to why the dead did what they did in life. Then Yama's judgement comes. If you're sent to go through the left door, you're bound for some form of punishment. If you go to the right, you're receiving your rewards. In another version you're given a passport of sort based on the weighing of two reports, if your bad left side report is bigger than your good right one, you'll be handed a passport that is given to your left hand and you'll face repercussions. If the good one is better, you get one on your right and you'll face rewards. Depending on who you ask, this could mean some time in a form of purgatory or bliss, an eternal form of either or both after the punishment is given, or the rewards and punishments is given when you reincarnate. This is not a complete version of the whole process, there's variations to it and some variations (or parts of the story) have also managed to find their way in other beliefs that probably do not have anything of an equivalent to Yama and his court. You might not find all this in books or something that's written down because lots of them are handed down through word of mouth. So there's that angle. Apologies if there's something wrong or incorrect or incomplete in what I've written. No offense was intended.

I believe it's just due to the bad reputation of being associated with the Underworld or the Netherworld that gives these gods or deities some bad rep. Thanks to our modern society associating the Netherworld or Underworld as Hell, we too, associate Yama or Hades or Anubis and any other gods that may relate to hell as evil.

Thank you for the art info, they are beautiful works that I did not know had a connection. One thing, this is according to a channel I follow run by a guy from and in Japan who focuses on Japans culture, history and current social issues. The channel is "Ask Shogo" just you know my source: Yokai is not defined as a ghost, Yurei is the word for ghost. At least according to Shogo who is from japan and his videos discuss japanese social culture, history, traditions, etc. Yokai can be literally anything from a tree to a shoe to a lantern to a chimera to a monster, or "things that have souls in them" whereas Yurei are specifically the souls of the deceased. In Kanji "Yu" means confinement or imprisonment and "Rei" means spirit according to Shogo which he said was an easy way to remember it. Yokai is believed to be rooted in Shinto which is polytheistic and believes even ordinary objects can take on a soul of their own, Yokai are believed to have been thought up as a means of explaining the unknown like noises in the night or creaking floor boards in an otherwise empty house. He has a video specifically on the difference between the two if you want to investigate, maybe even collab as he seems to be a very good natured guy with a lot of knowledge on Japanese culture and more. Always love seeing collabs between educational channels. As for a favorite Yokai Im gonna have to go with the Kamaitachi, I loved swords and the many ways warriors used them and how they regarded them and always have since I was very little so a large Razor weasel whos tail and claws are all long sharp blades and they can move so fast they look like small tornados. They are NOT friendly but they are very cool (and have appeared in anime before) which is basically a rule you apply to most wildlife anyway, respect their power and appreciate their amazing capabilities but be aware you are just food to them as is the way of nature, nothing personal. I am not Japanese, just an American millennial who grew up with Toonami animes and a fascination with the Samurai, developed an appreciation for the culture and its people. I imagine a common story for a lot of us who grew up in the 90s and 2000s in the US.

You should look up the anime (or manga if you don’t like anime) Mushishi about mushi. Mushi are like natural spirits that are more like animals unlike yokai which are more human like. Think like pests or bugs or infections but no cruel intentions. It follows a man named Ginko who is kinda like a mushi doctor as he travels around areas and helps people with mushi issues. It’s all non violent and slow paced and is very folklore oriented.

Love your video hochelaga ,but I felt need to note that yama was the king of the underworld but he is not an evil diety he was just a judge that decide whether you are going to be punished in hell (jigoku) or not ,he wasn't evil I've just fear people will get misinform with this small sentence since a sentence can change a person perspective (I didn't want any changes or edit toward this video I love it )anyway here is just a small notice about yama so that misinformation won't be spread especially with the concept about the underworld deity (we don't want people to see that every underworld deity as an evil deity, its just felt wrong doing this) Anyway in case you read this I've hope you will be able to make some video about some eastern culture there always alot of interesting stuff in it's legend and myth but it's always up to you

Thank you for including that Batman slapping Robin panel, which I have seen used elsewhere. I suspect it came from one of those "imaginary stories" DC Comics published when I was a child (I'm 68). For myself, that was a bonus. I also thank you for showing more of Hokusai's artwork and the context.

His output was astounding, that so little of it survives is tragic.
