Today, we'll take a look at a knife from GiantMouse which is both good in its own right, and a sign of great things to come, the ACE Sonoma.

Thanks for the great review as always Nick! I hope Giantmouse continues in this positive direction.

I have just one Giant Mouse, but I have kept my eye on their designs for about a year now. One thing, in general, I really appreciate is their blade to handle ratio. This guy seems to go with that trend.

A Giantmouse manufactured by Reate - an absolute no brainer. Got one on the way. Love the look of that clip.

Yes thank you Nick. I’ve loved mine since I got it. If I didn’t have a kapara coming for Christmas and a maxamet para 3 I’d get the regular titanium one today for $212. Great review!!!

Looks very much like the zt0450, which is still one of my favorite knives. Even to the shallow carry.

Had this knife (the pvd version) for 2 or 3 weeks now. It’s a gem all day long. That lanyard hole hotspot issue is a nothing burger.
@KnifeThruTheLens4 жыл бұрын
2 things on my opinion. Hot spots I don’t feel when flipping the knife and the clip is actually something I like for hight wise. So easy to grab out of the pocket. Definitely an awesome knife

I had to pick up one of these now that they’re on sale, I’ve been loving vox/anso designs recently

Me too... especially vox. Though I prefer the Biblio. At $175 it is amazing...

I’d finally managed to forget the nail nick on the GM3, and then this review comes around and reminds me of that hideous misstep. You may have just sold me on this one as the “CQI” model, so to speak.
@NickShabazz4 жыл бұрын
I don't know that they intended it that way, and there are substantial differences in construction, but it sure feels that way.
@richardhouse83644 жыл бұрын
I've had this knife for a while and I love the design aesthetic but mine needed some tuning on the detente to work well. Glad I kept it and got it where I like, but I did wish it was better out of the box.

BladeHQ has the Sonoma on sale for Black Friday for only $212! Normally $265. Not sure when the sale ends.
@bigsby42174 жыл бұрын
Because of the angle of the flipper tab, if I have any pressure on the framelock I can slip off instead of flip. Correctable on my part, but still annoying and painful (due to the jimping) when it happens.

They now make a normal pocket clip for this model. The new V2 model has a wire pocket clip. I have the latter model and love it.

I'm trying to decide between this and the WE Mini Buster, the Mini Buster checks off a few more boxes regarding things that I don't have yet in my collection but the design of the Sonoma is top notch in my opinion. What do you guys think?
@ekirenrut2 жыл бұрын
I snagged a mini buster a few weeks back. Blackwashed finish. It's absolutely gorgeous. I say do it! This Sonoma is heavy on my radar though. Love the lines. I have the Boker Karakurt and the Viper Katla - both Voxnaes designs, and this one obviously shares that same DNA. Don't think you'll go wrong with either.

Beautiful knife, but I can’t see myself carrying it due to how shallow it carries. Unfortunate because I would love to add it to the collection.

If you are speaking of the knife being very much on point design wise due to the ever prevailing GREY I guess I am going to concur.

Looks like a cross between two excellent Sinkevich designs, the ZT 0450 and ZT 0470... HOWEVER, Jens Anso also has an *excellent* eye for design. Like the fine jimping. However2, I'm with Nick... the hot spots and especially the sharp handle edges/points ("arrangement") need to be addressed for me to part with $$. As expected, thoughtful & helpful perspective from Nick.

I'm watching this because I got one as a present and wanted to watch a review on it. I carried it all week and honestly don't mind the shallow carry (although the deep carry will probably end up on it)

is it assisted? I don't know how to tell
@bigsby42174 жыл бұрын
It is not assisted.
@Dynotop1a4 жыл бұрын
No, I’d recommend watching his disassembly video. Generally there will be springs involved in an assisted knife while this is relying purely on the pressure your finger applies to the detent ball and blade. You could also search up an assisted knife disassembly on Nick’s channel here. Hope this helps.
@DieYuppieScum914 жыл бұрын
A giveaway that it isn't assisted is how easily it closes. On an assisted knife, you have to apply constant pressure to close it because you have to overcome the assist spring. The way that this knife just falls shut very easily indicates that it isn't assisted.

I like the iterative approach too, but I didn't expect them to do a new iteration of the ZT0450. It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for them.

@MrDarrylR Жыл бұрын
Sinkevich seems to, like Vox/Anso, be driven primarily by ergonomics. Alas, most Sinkevich designs are either out of my price range, too small (a problem given his handle designs), or too large (a problem for EDC). In production knives, there's just two Sinkevich designs between 3.25" and 3.75", the ZT 0470 and the Spyderco Drunken, and the entry fee is $320+ on them.

OFF TOPIC but inspired by a sale price of $185, still to much? Hey Nick! What would you think of this model for a first time purchase of a Benchmade abstainer, needless to say for me it is all about the blade. I value your opinion. Chow! ( Benchmade - Bedlam 860 Knife, Scimitar Blade) $200 more or less.

That pocket clip is horrible, I am glad I waited until they offered an excellent deep carry clip. It came with both so they realized how bad the original clip was.

Can we stop acting like all of these WE/reate produced knives are different brands? This is a reate designed by giantmouse, so just call it the Reate Ace Sonoma. A lot of these name changes seem like they are trying to dexeive you into buying brands you normally don't like due to politics/quality etc.
@dalecarpenter88282 жыл бұрын
ridiculous price ! the handle is 2x as wide as it could be ! butt the blade is not a billboard and it is almost small enough for a liner lock to be somewhat safe ( not safe , just strong enough to get you wounded badly ) ! put an axis lock ! get rid of the flipper and then you got a $100.00 knife ! the steek is BS hype !
