This must be from the time period Mike Marshall was talking about, "when giant mando's roamed the earth.".😂

Imagine playing bass with a pick😩. I know people have used a pick on this thing, but should be illegal🚫😂

Yeah. A full on operation would be needed to get that thing out

@@nate_4594 They were built to be played with a pick. It's not like a modern bass (It's actually not a "bass" at all), it's a mandolin voiced in the bass register. If you use your fingers, you better be playing solo, or only the first couple rows will hear you. If cellos, violins, or octave mando's are with you, only about the top 3rd of your notes will be heard when there's a lull in the other instruments.

I was amazed when I found one of these basses in St. Petersburg Russia, it happened about two years ago. For the price of this bass, you could buy a small apartment at that time.

btw in the balkans fretted bass with round wounds is a reality even before 1850 played with a big old pick made from a horn of a bull naturally and there are recordings of tamburizta groups from America as early as 1912... Gibson has a lot in common with the balalaika bass though ;)

Very interesting history! Thank you for telling about this amazing, unique instrument! 😀 It is just a shame they fell out of favor.

That extra endpin is genius! Would that be Lloyd Loar who came up with that? Might be too late for Orville Gibson.

@UCCkC_RBt7bYlkCI_5VPwFbA It's literally an Enormous Acoustic Bass shaped like a Mandolin & it's just loud. If you use D'addario Mandobass Strings it might work better.
