KZfaq Originals presents The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash stands among the giants of 20th century American life. But his story remains tangled in mystery and myth. This documentary, created with the full cooperation of the Cash estate and rich in recently discovered archival materials, brings Cash the man out from behind the legend. Taking the remarkable Folsom Prison recording as a central motif and featuring interviews with family and celebrated collaborators, the film explores the artistic victories, the personal tragedies, the struggles with addiction, and the spiritual pursuits that colored Johnny Cash's life.
The Original Score to the documentary is available now, featuring essential Johnny Cash recordings & original score by Mike McCready incorporating exclusive interview soundbites with Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, and others. JohnnyCash.lnk.to/TheGiftOST

I don’t generally comment on KZfaq, but I feel I have to. I think that Johnny Cash is timeless. His voice, with its bold yet humble tone, and later in life a tone of a weathered man, speaks to the downtrodden. Those who feel lost, without direction. His voice, moreso than any lyric or instrument(not to say those are not important) contributes to his unmatched ability to speak to anyone. Truly a legend in music and art in general

My Dad loved his music, so we heard Johnny all of our lives....now, my kids love him too. Iconic soul. His voice is too deep to emulate easily, but no matter which octave you start on, the range is incredibly wide. I always end up stumbling and laughing whenever I try to sing a Johnny Cash song.

The first country music concert I ever went to was Johnny cash. And June Carter. It was wonderful! Johnny cash had in a blue shirt with ruffles on the front. He was so handsome. I told my husband man he’s so beautiful. Later I was happy to learn Johnny was friends with Elvis. My husband laughed at me saying Johnny cash was handsome. My husband was a very handsome man himself. It was on Austin Texas. We were in about the tenth row. If I remember right mother Mabel and the girls were there too. It was a good show.

I had his San Quentin album on an 8-track that I listened to driving back and forth to college on I-95. When I graduated, he came to the Opera house in Wilmington, Del. We went to see him and later Loretta Lynn. I had always wanted to be a singer, I remember watching JC on the tv at my grandparents house and said to myself, that's exactly what I would love to do. I was a fan of his early music and his later self-published albums. I joined the Navy and listened to him up until his death in '03 when I saw him on the cover of Time magazine in the airport coming back from Iraq. He has always been my personal hero. He seemed to be on a mission to sing about the common man, somehow eclipsing so much that brings other artists down right at the start. He is truly a legend.

Johnny didn't have a "perfect singing voice", but you could just FEEL the pain in his words. When June passed away, my Mom said "he won't last long without her", and she wasn't wrong. My brother absolutely HATES his rendition of "Hurt", but if you listen to the words, and watch the video, it's like a knife to the heart. To this day, I still tear up sometimes when I watch that video.

Johnny Cash always sang and made you believe that each song was about him. He transported you on a journey through his songs to believe that each ballad was not just written by him, but about him. Much like the way the professionals said Joaquin Phoenix accomplished portraying Johnny Cash in Walk The Line. It was said that Joaquin didn't play Johnny. He became Johnny. Johnny Cash lead people through redemption's story through his songs and through his life. He wound his story up as the redeemed sinner as anyone must be to see Heaven. Through his songs and his life, he showed the plan of salvation so that everyone that followed him would be pointed to The True Way (Jesus) to redemption, salvation, and true success of this life that will remain. The Bible is clear that only that which we do for God will last. Johnny Cash, as the redeemed sinner leads others in the path to true success, Jesus. Many celebrities can't handle when their sins are publicly known. Johnny Cash took that and turned it to the best good for all looking to him for some kind of happiness and pointed them to The True and Real Redeemer and Saviour, Jesus Whose Happiness Never Dies and Takes you to Heaven.

@@leafjohnson6664 Unless you count HYPOCRISY as a flaw. Jesus did say... "But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell."... but if you could ask the "money changers" or those who SOLD ANIMALS (I guess anyone who works at 'Petco'is screwed), they would probably tell you that JESUS was ANGRY. Or, if you think telling his followers to MUTILATE/AMPUTATE their own BODY PARTS in order to avoid SINNING is flawed, he also said... "You shall not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell"... or... "If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell"... or... "If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched" Or if telling them to do what he KNOWS is not even POSSIBLE for a human, such as... "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” ... then he might have had a flaw or 2. There are plenty more examples, but no matter how many there are, those who have been brainwashed their entire lives to believe such nonsense will say some OTHER nonsense about how his words should be interpreted or whatever, but deep down, they get the point, even if they can never admit it... not even to themselves. Just kidding, 😉.

I try to emulate Johnny by telling it like it is. Most people don't like hearing the truth. They'd rather sugarcoat it and make it sound less honest. Thank you Johnny for being my role model and by helping me to follow your courage in telling the truth.

@Honest Mark Thanks for replying I have kept thinking about this since I watched it. He was truly a genuine person hard to find these days. I'm honored to have seen it. I use to watch his tv show. I remember how good it was. I was young then but I tuned in every Sat. night. I remember when his son was born. I'll never get to meet him, maybe some day in Heaven. I bet he is with June. I love his family too. Take care Mr. Cash write some gospel songs and sing them for Jesus. Farewell to you and Jack.

I've had a love for this man and his music since I was only a child. Our lives barely crossed over as I was a day short of 2 years old when he died. But if not for him and the lessons he shared through song, I wouldn't be who I am today. So I say thank you to John R Cash for everything you have shared with the world in life and in death. I say thank you to June Carter for providing the light that he needed in his darkest hours. Thank you to Vivienne for encouraging him in the beginning of his career even when the goings were hard. To John's children, I thank you for sharing with us the legacy of not only your father but your mother and step mother. You have all touched my life in a way that only his music can explain and I am blessed by it daily. Even 16 years later I say thank you, for everything.

His music cannot save your soul. Only Jesus Christ can do that. Eternity will not be about any of us or what we have done. It will all be about Jesus Christ who died on a cross to save us from our sins. We all deserve hell and then the lake of fire on judgement day.

@@AnnaLVajda what you said here is absurd and absolutely untrue. Johnny Cash was far from perfect but this is libelous nonsense you have stated. There is no documentation from anyone who knew Johnny Cash that ever said this ugliness about Johnny. He was known to be very non-judgmental. His second home was in Jamaica and he spent a lot of time raising money for children charities there (black children).

I love this song and you can hear and feel that he's been through this at some stage.
