I discuss the show and react to the characters with Marian being proposed to by Cousin Dashiell, Reverend Forte becoming ill, Oscar being with Miss Beaton, George Russell going against the union of workers and Peggy and Mr Fortune growing closer. Marriage proposals were like that back then especially for the upper class. More public because it was hard to get young women alone without a chaperone. People would get engaged after very short times knowing each other and virtually no time alone.

I'm happy George came to his senses, Larry Russell was so busy with that woman in Newport he forgot he's attracted to Marion. Aunt Ada crying n Aunt Agnes arms made me cry last night and I now believe Oscar could be getting scammed.

I am not happy that Rev. Forte is ill. Ada deserves a few years of happiness. I figured it was too good to be true with Ada and Rev. Forte😢 I hope Bertha pulverizes “Turner.”😂

It was obvious that Ada would become a widow. They can't have Agnes living by herself. This brings her sister back to where she started. Marian won't get married. I hope Jack gets his patent and becomes a millionaire. I can't wait until Mrs. Winterton is found out by her husband for what she's really about, and he dumps her !

I don't think he will dump her, that will be a bigger scandal than it's worth but shipping her off isn't a bad idea. None of us want Marian to marry anyone but Larry. I actually appreciate watching them fall very slowly for each other. Since she is in the main character list, I think her happiness is important to the writers as well.

My assumption is that Jack may get the help of his boss in the next episode, perhaps the banker or the banker's mother will come forward to help. The boss who comes with the strike problem may give a mutually satisfactory plan to end the strike. For example, the overtime pay for overtime hours may be more attractive, the workers will get a generous salary, and the boss will get the work efficiency of the workers, and both sides will be happy.

Although, Marian and Larry did not seem infatuated instantly I personally do believe their feelings may blossom eventually as they are good friends who are comfortable enough to confide in one another and who share same values. One of the most visible is them both being feminists. Marian is one because of what she stands for in personal and professional life. I think it's even more obvious in Larry's case when we realise how he dislikes the way Gladys is treated by Bertha and how he has her back on more than one occasion. But it's even clearer from his admiration for the constructor of the bridge and his sadness over the reasons she keeps that a secret.

George Russell and Clay definitely seemed to be representing Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick and the Homestead strike… except Carnegie was in Scotland and workers were killed IRL

George Russell will be ruthless with Clay if it comes to that. Clay is his peer, so he's fair game. Remember that he had driven Mr. Morris to suicide just last season. I think George faltered on his resolve because he saw the children.

@@LSTEdD1Mr Russel is a family man. See how he treats his daughter. I think he sees the logic in the “8 8 8” (the time he said “would it be so terrible for them to have more time with their families?” But he is not easily convinced. Now he sees they are willing to die for it…these workers are as tough as him. He will have to negotiate.

Which is obnoxious because he hasn’t tried courting her at all. Like don’t be mad at your own lack of being proactive. I also don’t know any of these people’s ages. Ms. Blane looks fairly young but was called twice Larry’s age. I’m assuming Marian is older than him as well, just not as much. I like their relationship but don’t think they need to be together

I think that proposal was very manipulative! And, we have already seen the future problems when Dashiel said to Marion that it is not as if she is a real teacher! I think Marion is going to start confiding all of this to Larry, and they will realize that they love each other and/or should be together as their values are similar.

Peeped his plan from the start, even used his daughter as well! Marian is definitely NOT feeling him. Larry knows it, and offered a listening ear. Whenever she needs him! Awesome!

I LOVE this series because it shows accurate areas of our history and from different viewpoints and lenses (from the rich, struggling, and poverty). Everything is professionally performed by these amazing actors, and I hope this series is well watched and renewed.

The dynamic between Ada and Agnes is part of what makes the show so good…they can’t just throw it away like that.

He's in every episode of this season. I think it's honestly a nod to his character in House. I think he'll be fine and it's a misdiagnosis or they'll try the newest scientific answers and he'll be fine but in a wheelchair.

I love shows like this but really hate when the story line is so cruel to a sweet character. I really hope everyone is correct and he survives. Hopefully they wrote the story this way so the sister wouldn't have to live alone and was happy for them to live there with her.

I’m proud of George. He showed himself to be a decent human being, not just a robber baron.

The real Jay Gould was every inch a robber baron but he did love and take care of his wife and kids. He also was a supporter of the Mount Vernon society to place MV in trust for the people as a museum/park. He and his wife also paid for the land and the building of a church in NYC for the citizens. (Real estate was so expensive that many groups could not afford to purchase land for a building, let alone build a church.) Had he lived longer (He died of TB/"Consumption" at age 56, after being really sick for about a year) he may have endowed other charities (as did Carnegie and Rockefeller). But as it was, he divided his wealth equally between his children and his with his wife and oldest son as executors of the will

I think Larry and Gladys will ask George to help Marian. Either by digging up dirt on Dashneil or finding out her stocks are not worthless. Or Luke will help her as he really likes her and knows she always has Adas back. Oscar is getting scammed.

This was the most human portrayal of George Russell we've ever seen so far and it brought me to tears actually. He may come off as a bully, cutthroat, dont stand in my way business man but at the end of the day he's got a big heart. You see that through his devotion to Bertha, patience for Gladys and tolerance for Larry's fling. Maybe he's like Tony fron the Sopranos. 🙄 But man, this was the first time I felt like rooting for him when he saw the son of the Union leader and stopped the shooting. That was a powerful scene. Also, when he walks out Henderson's house where the mill workers were ogling him with not a word spoken yet you could cut the tension with a knife speaks volumes. What a dramatic ending indeed! Bravo to Morgan Spector for an impeccable performance I can only aspire to be in real life. Hah!😝

I really like The Gilded Age....but I feel this season things are moving way too fast like they're not getting a 3rd season! I like for some plot points to take a few episodes to unfold; like that patent thingy....he should not have received a reply in the same episode he applied for it...should have waited for at least 1 more episode 🤷‍♂ The cancer diagnosis is also too early, it should have waited at least 1 more episode.....

George has shown to be compassionate, both to his family & employees. Glad that he realized killing men & boys, creating widows & leaving children w/o fathers wasn’t worth it. Now what? Btw, there are still corporations today that don’t fully support their workers. It’s a reminder of how it was then & what it took to change things for so many elements in our country.

Marian seemed to be little more than a missing entry in Dashiell's CV. I think someone at the patent office will steal Jack's design. Oscar's definitely getting played at his own game. Couldn't happen to a nicer chap.

Like I said before, Luke will die of sickness and Ada will be a widow and get back with Agnes. I hope I'm wrong. I'd like to see Ada enjoy married life. Bannister's revenge plot is the funniest moment here. Truly unexpected but a fresh welcome to all the serious drama. Also, Jack the footman's character has always been endearing to me. He's young, ambitious, hopeful yet adoringly innocent. All the Van Rhign household are adorable. This was a rollercoaster episode in a good way. This was less focused on Bertha and let the other characters shine and tell their story. Sad to know only two more episodes left. I declare this a superlative season. Wow 😊

I like how the family seems to have become closer since Marian’s arrival and that Aurora is more involved with them as is Oscar. The way they came together for Aida’s wedding was beautiful as well as when they found out her husband is ill. It sucks Oscar is getting conned.

About renewal of the show, I think it will be. Its held the Number 1 position on Max since it began airing/streaming. And this doesn’t include live broadcast viewers.

I seriously think Larry in love with Marian and I believe them being together will come down the road. I feel like if that’s the case Bertha won’t like it because despite Marian coming from money she in a sense is poor and Agnes will prefer her to marry into old money. his father and sister will be on board with it since they already like Marian.

So Mrs. Van Rhijn was right! Rev. Forte knew he had cancer and moved to nyc to find a gullible woman to marry and take care of him. Poor Ada was targeted for her kindness.

Also ironic because oscar alludes to his aunt adas bad luck in that one scene . He said poor aunt Ada , such bad luck. He's about to be down on his luck too with all that money he's about to gamble

Yep, the summary for the finale seems to indicate they Rihn’s will fall on hard times. Perhaps Larry will save the day with a proposal of his own.

I feel awful for Oscar, but if he’s financially ruined and out of society circles, perhaps he could leave NY with John Adams or just go somewhere and lead a better life more openly, say in France or Germany, where it would still be somewhat underground to be gay, but he could have a fake identity and pass by unknown.

In an earlier episode wasn't it stated (by Agnes or Ada) that Oscar's father thought that Oscar was frivolous or lazy? I know that Agnes asked him what he had done to get beat up (running his mouth, etc.) Dashiell's proposal and his remark about Marian's teaching made me sick!

I’m really not a fan of them killing off Rev. Forte. Let Ada have a healthy marriage/ending. It just seems like they want to circle back to the old dynamic she had with her sister but I’d prefer for both women to grow past that.

I don't think Oscar is stupid enough to invest all or a significant part of his fortune. He may lose a large amount, which is unpleasant, and Maude won’t be who she pretends to be. This will be an even stronger motivation to look for a rich bride. If he loses too much, then he has an old name, influential cousins (Aurora is one of the gate keepers in high society, his grandmother was from Livingstones etc ) so he can marry someone lower in origin, but rich, like Sissi who married Raikes, who, according to Marion, isn’t good enough to marry into old families, but her fortune is big enough.

I don’t like Cousin Dashiell anymore. How you could ambush the woman you claim to love with a proposal in front of everyone including your daughter and giving Marian no way out or way of refusing is a very horrible thing to do. Especially as you weren’t even courting. I don’t like the guy anymore. That was really out of line and unfair to Marian.

If Marion rejects the "perfect" Dashiel, she will destroy her reputation. And Bertha needs a daughter-in-law with a crystal clear reputation and irrepressible social ambitions, not a teacher. So because of this Dashiel, Marion fell into an incredible trap.

Ok before discussing Larrion, will young Gladys become a Duchess? I bet she does. The Marion Proposal is a plot twist which is very reminiscent of Downton’s Matthew and Lady Mary going back and forth. Not surprising given the creator and main writer! Cousin Dashell is a snob, albeit a rich snob. I firmly believe in Larrion! Larry checked himself upon seeing the proposal, but I think they could still have a future. Marion was ambushed by the proposal and I think she can get out of it if she wants to. Agnes will pressure her, as will the daughter who desperately wants Marion for a mother, however Marion has a strong will so my faith is in her doing what will make her happy.

I’m confused why Marianne hasn’t pursued Larry more. She seems almost asexual. Also that comment about teaching by Dashiell was hella rude but otherwise he’s been a great guy and would make a fine husband. He should’ve courted her longer

As a potential mother-in-law, Bertha Russell will be angry if she finds out that Marion wants to continue teaching. She needs a daughter-in-law who is socially ambitious, with an impeccable reputation, which Marion will spoil by accepting and then rejecting the "ideal" from the point of view of society Dashiel. Even if she gets together with Larry, she will end up in another controlling household.

Oscar is getting scammed. Marian 100000% doesn't feel the same way. Turner will be found out, her husband will dump her on her rear end and it will be fabulous. Things feel a bit rushed this season because there is one less episode. I do hope there is a third season; my husband and I love The Gilded Age. It's only one of three shows we watch together.

Ugh this entire episode was such a downer "yuck" ending to a week- we all wait until Sunday every week and we even have to wait until 9pm and then this- bleh. I wish they would just release it at the beginning of every Sunday so when episodes are 100% dark and down like this we can get it out of the way 😆

I don’t hate her, but her story is nothing more than a distraction; it is almost entirely disconnected from everything else that is going on. The writers obviously felt that they needed to pay tribute to the woke mob.
