I saw a really good post that talks about why these girl boss remakes are such a problem. It is so hard to escape an abusive and toxic household and it's legitimately okay to seek help. These adaptations make her really girl bossy and strong, implying that the only reason you aren't out of this situation is because you're not strong enough to get out of it and bring the message that you need to get yourself out of it rather than considering the fact it's okay to seek help.

Unlike most of this, the stepmom not approving of her sell her dresses actually makes sense, but as a CLASS thing, not a woman thing. They're this upper-middle to upper-class family, and would not have wanted to be linked to selling stuff (rather than making money from land). Think Miss Bingley disparaging Elizabeth Bennett because her uncle is "in trade". On the other hand, they let Cinderella dress and act like a servant and pretend she has no relationship to them so....

This movie tried so hard to be modern and progressive it felt like it just circled back around to being regressive. Also cannot stand that they used pop songs instead of making their own songs. The Brandy and Whitney Houston version of Cinderella still feels more progressive than this movie and that version aired in 1997.

I dislike it when writers and directors try to make a "feminist" or "social justice" movie and don't even succeed in making a good movie. The Charlie's Angels and Mulan remakes are examples of this. Crew members: Do you want to make her the best designer in all the land? Should we make our feminist message creatively subtle? Director: Naw. She's a woman so everything will just work out for her in the end. And we will just beat our message into the audience. Ever After did "feminist Cinderella" far better than this decades ago. It's not a perfect film (the use of the g slur for the Roma people hasn't aged well) but it is far better than this movie.

If I may present my pitch for the sequel, "Snow White: Girlboss." A beautiful princess sings "I Want to Break Free" as her jealous stepmother looks on. It's deep because she wants to be free from abuse. Later, the stepmother tries to kill her, and Snow White escapes into the woods. She is very, very sad that she was forced out of her abusive situation. She is taken in by a group of seven dwarfs; their sexualities are never confirmed, so there are a lot of gay jokes. However, they'll also flirt with Snow White when she can humiliate them in a quirky, funny way. They're comic relief, not because they're funny, but because they are the butt of a lot of jokes. It's okay to laugh at them, though: they're poor and ugly. After teaching the dwarfs discipline by making them clean the cottage, she sends them off to the mines for a long day of work. She uses her "me time" to fashion the jewels the dwarfs had mined in the past into clunky statement necklaces. Then she gets poisoned by an apple. It's not really a huge deal. She has a dream sequence where she sees herself, wearing a fluffy tulle dress and the chunkiest statement necklace she's ever seen. They sing a duet about self-love, she kisses her dream self, and she wakes up. The prince is there, trying to talk to the dwarfs into letting him take the comatose princess to his kingdom, where the finest doctors in the world can try and revive her. He's ecstatic to see she's awake. She punches him in the face before kissing him. It's funny. (I did not mention the prince earlier, but he showed up! It wasn't love at first sight, I promise!!) Snow White then returns to the palace to confront her stepmother, who starts crying because she'd only ever been valued for her beauty and was very jealous. The audience already knew that, but Snow White didn't, so she and her stepmother sing a reprise of the self-love song because Snow White forgives her. She's not traumatized or anything. In the end, Snow White becomes a business woman, making huge statement necklaces. She has the dwarfs work long hours to provide her with the jewels she needs, and they split the profits 50-50 between herself and seven men, who were already living off the grid in the woods. The dwarfs are totally chill with this arrangement. And they all live happily ever after, because Snow White is now super empowered and rich, and she and her stepmother are friends now. The End.

In Cinderella's defense, she admitted to designing the dress not sewing it. The design was hers, just the godmother made it. Now, here's the undercut of that defense... She didn't make the dress herself because she lacked either the skills or resources to make that dress, which means she is a dress designer not a seamstress and she would need to be able to get better cloth selections and a team with the practical experience to be able to pull off her more exotic ideas if she wanted to be successful, and her more fanciful ideas weren't exactly haute couture. That being said, why is "I want to be able to work" the message these writers felt a need to bring to young girls? I mean most of us grow up with working moms so it's not like this is creating any inspiration for most girls who are going to see it. They solve a problem that doesn't exist for their target demographic instead of solving one that does. They don't even address the issue that they made up with any depth. "Hey, women can't do business. Oops, nevermind." Just, why?
