I was a kid when it came out in theaters, and when it became available to rent, my dad would NOT let me and my younger sister see this. First time I saw glimpses of the actual movie was when my parents, grandparents and aunt and uncle were all watching it in my grandparents' living room and they told us we couldn't watch it with them. I think I was 8 or 9. I finally watched it when I was 10 and it was that perfect balance of horror and action movie I only got from the Terminator and Alien's. It's definitely a classic for me, I've returned to it many times over the years as well as the sequels, even read some Alien vs Predator stuff from Dark Horse, played a few of the various games etc. The Predator is a fascinating horror antagonist, a combination of out of this world technology and raw physical power. Like you saw how that thing beat the sh*t out of Dutch at the end with its bare hands, no enhancements, no tech. And every new entry in the movies, and expanded media sheds more light onto them, you learn a little bit more about them

The predator is a hunter and a warrior, the reason it didn't just kill Dutch is because he posed the best challenge he has faced since his time there. He recognised him as a warrior and someone to have a genuine 1 on 1 fight without the technological advantage.

There was a key line I think you guys missed where Arnold said to Anna: "He didn't kill you because you weren't armed. No sport." Then you see it preparing Billy's skull and admiring it as a trophy. Those were the two main things that solidified that this is all a game to the Predator. That's why he wanted to face Arnold "man to man" after he had put up a good fight.

It's funny, but I notice a lot of reactors, even the one's paying close attention, completely miss this point. It's like they hear it, but a lot of folks seem to think it's a throwaway line.
@slchance8839

100% I think what surprises me most about modern reactors and their questions, is that i saw this movie when i was a CHILD, and understood practically everything about it. Hunting for sport. Going on safari. Hand-to-hand for honor. Billy's Native American ability to sense things. Trophy hunting. Mimicry as a kind of birdcall ("over here.") Billy's sacrifice. Even the predator trying to communicate at the end, by saying back the same sounds he heard "Whatthehellareyou." (like i do when I talk back to my dog, by mimicking the same noise he made at me) i pretty much had ZERO questions or confusion...i just wanted more. I guess today's audiences just arent used to going into a movie blind and having to figure anything out.
@daerdevvyl4314

I think it's because the concept of sport hunting is completely unknown to them. This is partly because they're women, but mostly because they've probably grown up in an urban environment. And ideas that used to be recognizable in pop culture, like the man on safari in Africa or the room with animal heads on the wall, are just not part of pop culture anymore.

@@daerdevvyl4314 I think it's a combination of age and culture. Back when I was a kid, I didn't have the internet and all these videos....I had to use my imagination. There is so much readily available information now that the newer generations don't really have to figure out things so when they're presented with information without being explicitly told what it is, they're baffled by it. Like they questioned the beginning of the movie and whether that was the Predator being dropped off. Well, the Predator is obviously an alien....and the movie starts with an alien spacecraft launching something that falls to the earth so yeah, I would assume that's the Predator being dropped off. They don't tell you, "hey, here's the Predator being dropped off" but when the Predator "uncloaks", you see he's an alien and that would then explain the opening scene.
@ScreamingDoom

@@fubar1217 It also probably has to do with the fact that this is a reaction. If one is reacting to a movie, they can't really absorb it in the same way as a passive watcher; they have to comment on it for the audience watching them as well as interact with any partners. That means you're going to miss some things or just not have time to fully process it in the moment.

The Predator hunts for sport and takes trophies, and the reason it fought with Dutch instead of just killing him is that it seen him as a worthy opponent for a fight as Dutch was a formidable adversary. Some non-spoiler info: The Predator comes from a warrior race where honor through killing the most challenging prey is basically their religion, and how they earn status in their society or "tribe". Humans are just some of the prey that they hunt. They don't want to kill all humans, hence why they leave unarmed women, and children alive, so that there are always plenty of us to hunt, plus there is no honor in killing helpless prey. The Predator's goal is to seek the MVP human by observing them in conflict, then use technology, stealth, agility, and even psychological taunting and confusion to set up its final battle by taking out all the other players, so it can have its ritual battle with the MVP. Alien is like an animal. It's goals are to reproduce and eliminate threats for survival. Predator is an advanced, intelligent humanoid being, who kills / hunts according to it's religion and culture. The second movie is a great sequel, and this time a new Predator, which is higher in the ranks of his own kind (aka more experienced), chooses Los Angeles as his hunting ground. It holds up well, gives some more lore info, but any of the other Predator sequels don't do it very well, I'm sad to say, except for the most recent one called "Prey" which is a prequel. The nerd guy Hawkins, or first one to die, also wrote the script.

this film has so many great little details, even though it comes across simple, must have been pretty tough to make, I mean just imagine putting those guys together in a jungle and having them chase around a giant guy in a suit..it could have easily been a disaster, one of my favorite scenes is Billy's spinal column getting ripped out and his body falling through the trees, they really worked hard on this film, and it doesn't age at all..I mean there's just nothing to age it, Aliens was made just a year prior and that drop ship scene looks laughably bad but yeah some things are way overly explained, it's an alien big game hunter basically, probably wanted to land in Africa to kill an elephant and lion but ended up in Colombia with..tapirs and guerillas, that AVP film had a pretty neat back story

I love Dutch's learning curve in this movie. It felt gradual and earned. After every encounter he learned from his mistakes and adjusted his tactics accordingly. He even got the drop on the Predator more than once, so it didn't feel like his victory was completely unrealistic. And Arnold knew how dumb it would be if he just deafeated it no problem, and told the directors as much. I'm glad he had the humility to do so.

So here are some of the tidbits of this movie. Predator is no doubt a guys film by the way so glad you guys appreciate it. It is a story about the Predator who comes to earth to come into his right of passage. A creature who trains on his own world and then comes to earth to take care of himself and to match anyone or anything that could possibly oppose him, after his kills or survival he can then return to his home with bragging rights and become a so called Predator worthy among his own peers. The self destruct device is them taking their lost or becoming their insurance policy if they feel they have failed into become a full up and coming Predator. By the way when the Predator removed his helmet it was him facing Arnold in a one on one fight. No tricks, no hiding, no weapons. That he found his one ranking adversary. Hope this helps you.

First the predator did face Arnols in battle one on one because it considered him a worthy prey for the hunt. The bomb is an insurance policy in case it fails?! Lol, then why does it have a timer? Does it want to taunt like a cartoon villain? The bomb is a fail safe device for the predator to destroy its body and any technology humanity could rip from its body and use against them. Someone once said it best: Arnold was supposed to kill it (which the predator thought would be impossible) but showed mercy, the predator is like: "You are a worthy of respect, but one of us has to die today. Let me die with the dignity I have left. (Sets bomb timer) Goodbye, it was a good hunt."

When the predator takes off his helmet we can see that what he actually sees in the world is just a washed out mess of red because the jungle is just as hot as a person. But the scanner determines if what it is looking at is part of the natural environment or not, and the boy scout snares didn't trigger it, and neither did the mud on Arnie's body. Here is the thing if it comes to "for that time, straight forward no backstory..." question. This movie gave every backstory needed. Alien comes from time to time to earth and hunts people during heat waves. Dutch and his team are special forces that get an asignment to free hostages in the jungle. They are established as highly effective and completely deadly when they take out like 100 guys in a couple of minutes. The Predator watches them and decides to take them all out as his pey. He also collects parts of their body's as trophys. What more backstory do we need? Its a "modern" thing that each and every little thing has to be explained. Today we would get a backstory to the hat Anna wore when we first met her and how her mother bought it for her shortly before she died or something... It bothers me so much how little modern Hollywood thinks of his audience. I dont need to know how the team was formed, what planet the Alien is from or why Dilon changed so much since working for the goerment... cause its completely irrelevant for the story! But if this movie wouldve been made today, thats exactly what would happen. This movie is 107 minutes long... today it would be 145...

Well it's pretty clear the girls have no idea about army movies like this. But I agree the movie gave all the explanation it needed, only thing I would little bit fix is the mission they were given even Dillon's role what he was looking for was left totally pointless. I would have made Dillon get his CIA papers or whatever he wanted there and then they get ambushed by the predator as a surprise event.

Actually they did get the info the CIA needed and stopped the bad guys before they could invade their neighboring country. That was explained in the movie!

Amazing reaction. I recommend Hailey and Stella will react to the following Science Fiction films (outside of the Terminator, Alien and Predator films) such as _Arrival_ and _Blade Runner: 2049_ (both films directed by Denis Villenueve who did _Dune_ which Hailey and Stella reacted to), the original _Blade Runner, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, Minority Report, Ready Player One, _The Matrix_ films and _AVATAR_ (including its sequel, _The Way of Water)_

My favorite scenes in the Predator movies are when you see the Predator/Yautja tending to his injuries. It shows he’s not like your standard unkillable mindless monster, and instead an intelligent sports hunter who relies on skill as well as strength

I think this movie is unique. It starts out as a typical 80s war movie and then changes genre and becomes a horrific gore monster film who also happens to be an extraterrestrial!! -OG

Prior to shooting Jesse Ventura (who was an ex-navy seal and wrestler) and Arnold decided to have a bicep contest. Jesse thought he had the inside tract because he figured he would go to costume designers before the first rehearsal and ask them for Arnold's measurements. It turns out Arnold was a little smarter than Jesse estimated; Arnold had already convinced the entire wardrobe department to side with him and cut 5 inches off his measurements. Jessie built up to have 1-inch larger biceps, convinced he would win. When they showed up to the set Arnold measured out 3-inches larger than his competitor.

A little trivia for you. Later on when planning the Terminator movies they were trying to figure out the biggest most impressive fire arm to give the terminator. After a lot of discussion Arnold finally said check this out and showed them the chain gun from this movie. And Terminator history was made. Also in the scene where they are leaving one of the people in the helicopter was the man who wore the Predator costume. It was done as a thank you, job well done for the only person who didn’t get face time in the movie.

When Predator was released, GI Joe was at its absolute prime and this was the closest thing to a live-action GI Joe movie... with an alien thrown in for good measure. It was already a fantastic movie but IMHO the similarity to GI Joe really captured the imaginations of so many kids and teens .

You don't really need to see the others to understand the Predator. It's like you said, it's self-contained. The Predator was basically a rich dentist going on safari. Hunting just for the fun of it, and then Dutch started to fight back and The Predator started to experience something it didn't get from any of the others: A challenge. The guys all shoot into the forest, firing blindly, and the Predator has probably experienced that before...but by the end, the roles have reversed and the Predator is the one firing blindly at an enemy it can't see.

That is the urban myth. The real real is that you had a bodybuilder who had a reputation for being a-hole, a professional wrestler heel who was known for his talking, a football player, and 2 legitimate tough guy actors. Arnold encouraged everyone to work out with him. So you had a bunch of guys on a closed set. With the only distraction being proving how tough they were. That is why they were hired. Oh yes, I forgot to mention an up and coming actor who was a martial artist. Who was supposed to play the Predator. Who got kicked off the set because 1. his costume was unbearably hot and cumbersome. 2. He was rumored to be difficult on set.

It's a masterpiece really. Just amazing they could even put such a film together and pull it off. The most quotable movie ever imo. I think it's that way because the actors weren't exactly actors and it helped them with the lines..so everything they say is cool. You should react to Harry and the Hendersons. Keven Peter Hall also dons the suit in that one but it's such a fun.

Just correcting a little thing here: the Xenomorph from Alien did not kill for fun. It focused solely on survival and the reproduction of its species. It wounded Brett and Dallas and took them to be turned into eggs, as seen ih the Director's Cut. When it killed, it likely did it as a means to neutralize any threat to the eggs it was making. Parker was armed, so the Xeno had no reason to think Lambert wasn't either, so they both had to die. Again, it did not kill for fun. It was merely a creature of pure survival.

Ladies Welcome to the world of Yautja! Yautja is the Predator Species, warring and hunting species. Predator in this movie was on a hunting expedition to collect trophies. Remember the beginning of the movie, small ship disembarking from the mothership towards Earth. Predator traveling to hunt in the jungles of Central America. Creature was created by late great special makeup artist, Stan Winston and his crew. Fun fact is that action actor, Jean Claude Van Damme was supposed to play the Predator, but he was let go by the producers because he was too short for the role. Then young African American actor named Kevin Peter Hall gotten the role as Predator because he stands at 7Ft 2inches. Plus, KPH also played helicopter pilot when helicopter picked up Dutch (Arnold) at the end. Sadly, KPH died from complications of AIDS tainted blood transfusion for surgery.

Stan Winston did stellar work on the Predator look. Really an original piece of work. The actor who played the Predator talked about how hot and heavy the costume was and he could barely breathe in it. Pretty good movie that holds up mostly after all these years. Predator 2 is in a different locale. Since the Predator is just a species that hunts men for sport, each movie can be its own thing, with new predators and prey. Pretty cool premise.

Sweet summer children. The Predator found a worthy opponent and took off his gun and mask as a sign of respect. Hand to hand combat. Mano a mano. Put your dukes up. Knuckle up. Fisticuffs. But, of course, you have no frame of reference.

19:04 yeah that’s actually accurate from all the military guys I’ve ever talked with who have actually served and been in live combat. If you split , and your guys starts mag dumping, you don’t question immediately. You regroup on their position and immediately let loose in his targeted direction until your immediate superior calls it. Then you can question what tripped him, while maintaining watch.

I remember a kid my brother & I used to hang out with when we were kids. He had broken his arm when we were jumping our bikes over garbage cans, then, a couple weeks later, he fell off a tightrope wed made & broke his other arm. He had two full arm casts, from shoulder to fingertips. Couldn’t do anything for himself for weeks🤣 Ah, being a kid was so funny
