Sadly i first saw this painting on the back of a magazine for an advert for an agricultural bank or some such. I felt drawn to it then and many years later on a holiday in Paris I went to the musee d'orsay. I got to the 1st floor and thought ' oh, I wonder if The Gleaners is here' turned around and there it was. I nearly burst into tears of joy

A very strong, and beautiful painting. 'Time-travel' back to the fields of France, mid 19th century. (Thank you for what you are doing)

GREAT CHOICE Carel!!! One of my absolute favourites. I visited adorable Barbizon, and was quite overcome visiting his studio there and the local museum... I never thought that a painting of sheep could bring tears to my eyes!! I bought a wonderful book about his impact on Van Gogh too. Ever since I "haunt" his exhibits in both the Louvre and the Musée D'Orsay.

In my opinion, 'The Man With The Hoe' is Monsieur Millet's most powerful painting, in fact, I would say if not the most powerful paintings of all time, at least one of the top powerful paintings.

Great video Karel...he did a lot of farming paintings I think. There's a great one of a shepherdess and I live 'The Angelus' were they meant to be exhibited together perhaps?
@storiesofart3 жыл бұрын
He worked in and around barbizon to paint rural life. That is why he made so many farmers scenes. The Angelus was made in the same year but for a private commission. So although they were made close together, they were not to be shown together. I think it was decades later that the Angelus was first publicly shown.

So clearly the wealthy people who disliked the painting weren’t very well-versed in those biblical figures they liked to see in art so much. Because wasn’t Ruth…….a gleaner?
