Dong-eun had no place to go, so she got a job at a factory that provides lodging. Since most dorms are shared by several people, she came out to the hallway and studied with the hallway lights so as not to wake her roommates.

In Korea people take their shoes off always before getting in the house but in that scene with the girl she did that out of consideration so she wouldn’t make loud noises and distract her 😂

This drama is an adaptation based on an actual event that occurred in the South Korean provincial city of "Cheong-ju" in 2006. In Korean society, bad celebrities who have committed school violence in the past have been steadily expelled from 10 years ago. (Singers, actors, etc.) From the development of SNS, many people who were bullied by them in the past posted the damage on SNS, and eventually famous celebrities who committed evil were legally punished and kicked out of the entertainment industry. Even now, Korean entertainers are immediately kicked out of the entertainment industry when past school violence or serious crimes are revealed.

Just few things, the shaman threw salts at Yeon-Jin b/c ppl believe that this action helps you get rid of all the bad luck and bad ghosts; so it tells Yeon-Jin did something bad so the mom is trying to get the bad luck out. Factory studying scene -> few girls (usually 3, but sometimes up to 4) are sharing a room like a dorm. So Dong Eun couldn't turn the light on when her roommates are sleeping, so she decided to study outside, and the girl saw that. And that girl took off her slippers to help Dong Eun concentrate on her study. So yes, she is a friend :)

This is def one of the best dramas of the year, thanks for watching!

학교 선생도 가족도 도우지 않아서 이상하다고 생각하겠지만 당시 80-90년대 한국 학교은 교사 체벌이 강해서 많이 때리던 시기였죠. 그런 시기에 돈많은 집이 더 날뛸수 있던 상황이어서 실제로 많이 있었던 한국의 슬픈 배경이예요. 거기다가 청소년 형량도 낮아서 촉법소년으로 빨리 풀리는게 한국의 법이어서 학교폭력이 심하더라구요. 지금은 많이 나아졌는데 저 당시는 많이 있던 일이라고 하네요. 리뷰해줘서 고마워요!

20 years ago in korea school teachers hitted students very much. and that was no problem. but now everything changed.

The scene where the mom is throwing stuff on the bully was actually a ritual to ward off evil spirits/ bad luck. She was throwing salt at her to dispel any evil spirits/bad luck that was attached to her daughter since it was an important day for the mom. She needed all the luck/ good fortune she could get.

It is based on a true story and apparently the true story is a lot worse. The abuse was gruesome. The abusers have never been brought to justice which is even more shocking. It’s a sick world we live in.

So....apparently this happened in real life: a bunch of girls torturing their classmate with a hair curling iron. I do not know if the drama is based off of the event, but it seems likely. This is terrible. Bullying is happening everywhere, and it spreads like toxin. I really hope the main character gets her revenge. This drama is insanely good. The plot is very well written and it is a gripping story. It's a Kdrama so good acting is pretty much guaranteed at this point but even considering that, the actors and actresses did a fantastic job.

The bullying scenes are so hard to watch and listen to, esp ep 1. I definitely had to skip through it a bit bc of how upset and anxious it was making me. It’s an amazing kdrama though. A very different character than what Song Hye Kyo usually plays but, I also want to mention the phenomenal performances of the rest of the cast as well bc they fr make me wanna throw some hands when I see them on screen. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did!

The nurse was the only adult who's concerned but "resigned". The bully's mom could definitely pull some strings and most school nurses are those who are young and needed to keep their credentials flawless.

She was studying in hall way probably because she has roommate and cant keep the light on in the room. The other girl took her shoes off not to bother her studying with her steps.

some teachers were violent like that back in the days in korea when i grew up. i got beat up wit a pool stick n got stomped for playing hooky, dying hair n ear piercings lol i wasnt doing no harms to other kids but i did break rules so no complaining but those hits with a pool stick on same spot over and over till bleeding was bit too much for 16 yr ol girl lol anyways back then the coporal punishment wasn't an issue. I think it got banned around 2010.

back in the day it was perfectly normal for teachers to hit kids. i remember my mom told me in high school her homeroom teacher would pick on all the poor kids since their parents didn't give him money a.k.a. bribes, so she had to watch her friend get slapped and stomped on in front of the whole class for apparently talking back to him. a lot of teachers in the 60's-90's were just evil since there was no one to stop them.

it's inspired by a true story... unfortunaly. and about the attitude of the teachers, we have to take into account that it was way back when she was a teen. and yes at that time, connection was more valuable than justice; money ruled the town ( still does, but they are less shameless about it). if you are rich you are untouchable, so these rich kids be having the worst character, i swear, they do what they want, how they want , because at the end of the day, mom and dad have the tune to back it up and make it disappear. some are even capable of murder and nobody will ever find out about it, because their parents have connections in the police or with the prosecutor's office.. that is why the nurse couldn't say nothing. ho! and she got fired by the way, it was not her choice to not help our girl. so to conclude, yes korea has one of the worst system for handling bullying. a teacher could see the act with his eyes and still dismiss it, because he don't want the smoke ether( get fired and blacklisted in the teaching industry).

The nurse didn't punk out. Ya'll were talking so you didn't see that the nurse resigned the very next day, but we see this a lot in K-dramas where if you go against people with power you just disappear.

Corporal punishment was still legal in the 2000s. I was beaten by teachers in schools. Like i was slapped in my neck by a teacher at 12 because I didn’t bring my textbook. But things have been changed really fast in Korea. Corporal punishment is not legal anymore.

The fact that these were based on true incidents. Much of it was even toned down for audiences. SK education system is already a horror story and bullying makes it hell

A few years ago in my country, there was a man who was bullied until death in his academy. After autopsy, we found out that he got a lot of bruises and burns, including at his private parts. It was really heart shattering.

I saw a korean youtuber who made a video about this. Apparently, this kdrama was very much inspired by true events , mix of a korean bully case where the victims got her body burned by curling iron and a japanese bully case where the victim dedicates their life to take revenge. Terrifying.

Unfortunately a lot of the bullying that happens in Korea is literally just attempted murder and aggravated assault. There are middle school and high school students doing things like this all the time who DON’T end up as felons.

15:13 I think many foreigners will find this scene particularly difficult to understand, but there were really bad teachers in Korean schools until the 90's. If a student caused a problem at school, the parents paid money to cover it up. It was a daily occurrence for teachers to use severe violence against students due to their personal feelings. And the parents didn't even bother with it. Of course, that's not uncommon these days.

bullying in korea gets worst than this drama. In korea, minors are easily let off because they're kids. Also, it's very common to settle criminal cases with money as long as both parties agree. I don't know how much the laws have changed, but it's pretty corrupt. It wasn't until recently when video recording technology of cellphones became popularized that people began to get angry at this topic. I really respect the actress for dongeun. she said in an interview that dongeun didn't have anyone to protect her when she was a child, so by acting in this role she wanted to protect dongeun in her own way.

It happened in my country. A highschool boy at boarding school, got bullied with iron and everything until he die. Another case is some rebel boys have some sort of bad feeling to a group of boys study at a religious school. That bad boys burned a mattress in the room full of the students at night and then they lock the door with something which the students trapped and unable to open the door. That results in death of a group of students. They are middle school students. These are the case that was revealed, how about those that are not revealed especially involving higher up people.

answer to 27:53 : yes back in early 2000s teachers got away with hitting non behaving students. but not to that extent at least from my school, that's just dramatized. It was more of hitting your hands with a ruler where it hurts. It's become illegal for teachers to hit kids now.
