Maiken Nedergaard is Professor of Glial Cell Biology at the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Copenhagen (KU), Denmark and Dean’s Professor and Co-Director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in Rochester, NY.
Her multiple interests range from basic research on neuron-glia interactions to their role in aging, small vessel disease, seizure disorders and cerebral blood flow.
Forefront amongst her discovery is the identification of the glymphatic system, a brain equivalent of the lymphatic system within which cerebrospinal fluid diffuses rapidly and mixes with interstitial fluids, thereby filtering metabolic byproducts that accumulate due to neuronal activity.
The glymphatic system dramatically expands during sleep compared to waking - brain cleaning and detoxification is thus greatly facilitated during sleep, providing a novel and direct explanation for what we all generally consider sleep’s restorative effect.
She is an elected member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Spain, and Academia Europaea. In 2015 she received the Newcomb Cleveland Prize, from AAAS and the Alzheimer Prize in Denmark.

Excellent excellent talk, research, and clear presentation! Bravo! I especially appreciate how Prof. Nedergaard linked her team's work with other medical specialties, and what these findings may mean in those other fields. A true scientist considers more than simply her own area.

one of the finest presentation ever witnessed. It was as if the processes are going of live in front of eyes. the complex processes are depicted so lucidly. I congratulate Maiken Nedergaard for the brilliant presentation and of course her masterly experiments. Hats off to you ma'am.

Such an amazing and profoundly important presentation. So much of what we need to know about our own neurological and mental health, that we need to act upon right now, it right there.

Hello Dr Maiken. Your lecture is exactly what happened to my husband, never slept more than 6h. And in his Sixty, starts to complain of some symptoms, a ringer in his left ear, his Doctor found a pennine tumor in his brain, advised him to go to US to do the surgery. He did it but the doctor said that his case was unique and explain to my daughter the case. If you are interested in his case especially that his brain shrinked (all the info is in UfM , Ann Arbor Michigan Hospital). I can give you his info.

Thirty years ago I worked for a Chiropractor who taught me that it's best to always sleep on the your right side instead of the Left. Over the years I've heard the opposite but this presentation is now confirming what he taught me. It makes sense that we don't want to lay on the side that could constrict the heart. He also said that it's better for digestion as well.

what if it isn't dendrite loss, but a sort of hibernation? are dendrites dormant without waste clearance? if waste clearance during sleep is re-opened, do dendrites awaken?

The most common causes of deseases due to deficiency of organic minerals from the food we eat. Lack of sleep and exercise under sunlight. Human cells needs binding pair from these ingredients to be healthy. Inorganic chemicals, insecticide, herbicide harmfull environment blocks the glymphatic vessels. Organic nutrients needs the body cells as atp.

How does the protein waste go out of the brain and enter the venous perivascular space? Are there protein transporters? I don’t think proteins go through the aquaporin 4.
