If they ever revise the Artificer, perhaps they should have the clockworks replace the automaton companion, which is replaced/upgraded to stronger clockworks as you level up.

in 4th edition I played a gnome tinker artificer npc that invented and piloted a clockwork gollem.

I still have a character idea for a gnome that is inside a large clockwork set of armor (like the hulkbuster armor), but I'm not really sure how to do it since a gnome is small and balanced as such, so just turning a gnome into a medium creature with full plate wouldn't work, and I feel like it would fit to use heavy two handed weapons, but a gnome can't wield those

How does this compare to Warforged tho? Separate class entirely? Similar but different? If I wanted to play a clockwork but it has a chance of blowing up that seems dangerous. Warforged don't have that disadvantage.

Dammit, this just makes me want Warforged so badly.

I used the Stone Golem and the Oaken Bolter in my campaign last week in a room filled with traps. It's hilarious to use the harpoon with rope to drag a player onto a pressure plate and Stone Golems standing completely still only to slam the player on the ground when they try to save their friends.
