A replaceable battery is actually a HUGE pro for me. Think about it: in case of previous Flextail pumps, once the battery is dead, you have to wait until it's charged. Besides, the integrated battery will eventually degrade. In case of the new model you can just instantly swap the CR123 battery with another one. The absence of a USB port on the pump itself is not a big deal at all.

I think what I like the most about this pump is that you have a brand that is introducing a new product that addresses a different set of needs, instead of constantly updating the same product over and over with minute incremental improvements.

Hey Dan good video. I’ve had a flextailgear tiny pump for at least 3 years. Probably longer. It works great. I just did a 6 night backpack trip with 3 additional nights of car camping and inflated my sleeping pad every night without recharging it. It is a earlier version and had to modify the nozzle base to keep it attached to the pump. It does have a charging port on the pump so don’t have to disassemble it, as well as the double click safety on switch but no light.

I got one of these and I’m really happy with it. Using rechargeable AND non rechargeable batteries is a great feature for any tech. The nozzles aren’t 3D printed, they are soft silicone. It says which nozzle works with sea to summit pads, but their deflate port is not compatible… until I realised the pump nicely fits itself into the deflate hole.

I have a older model flextal pump and like you had mentioned the little devil can turn on. To solve that problem for myself I put it in a lightweight plastic bottle with my pad attachment. Seems to have worked so far. Of course it adds more weight. I like the size of the new one! Don’t like that you have to take it apart to recharge. I’d certainly be afraid of loosing something 😂

This is such a cool gadget - and a great (and honest) review, as always! I’m just never going to get one though. I’m 60 and an asthmatic but I hike 20-30mile days often enough that my lungs are in reasonable shape. After hiking all day I just use the “pump sacks 1.0” that I always carry with me 24/7- 20 deep, slow breaths and even a long wide pad is blown up. I take my time, I’m at camp, there’s no rush, and I can do it in 2 minutes while my dinner is rehydrating. Weighs nothing, costs nothing, takes up no space in my pack! I would highly recommend anyone to refer to their user manual and check this already available feature out!

I tested the Zero Pump in the field this week after putting up a first impression review. For people like me who mostly do trips that are less than 5 days it'll be a great little pump. Like you said it's got plenty of juice to get through multiple pads. The fact that it stays on the valve (tested on TAR Winglock only) it is great compared to my original Tiny Pump X. Not sure if the X2 stays on or falls off TAR valves so I can't comment on that. I do see the lack of a USB charging port as being a compromise. I have enough electronics to charge that I don't need to hassle with taking a battery out vs just plugging it in. My Fenix HM50R uses the same CR123 and has a USB-C charging port so it must be possible to build a tiny unit with a port! Sure, you can swap the battery out in the field but how many people carry extras? More people carry battery banks. Again that is a design choice so depending on what you value/need this could be a great option for a lot of people, and you can get CR123 rechargeable batteries with a built in micro or USB-C port. Bit of a hassle to take it out and charge in the field though... At 2 oz on the dot the Zero pump only slightly heaver (0.4 oz) than my cut down TAR pump sack, and it was nice to just let my huge Xlite Max inflate while I was doing something else.

That's pretty cool. I really liked the new Thermarest pump for the fact it also deflates pads but I have a S2S etherlight xt extreme. The Flextail X2 was the ticket and I love it. In my case, the adapters stay put on the pad and I don't have to hold it but that would be a huge detractor for pads that it won't stay on. But for me it's the deflate feature that I really love. Especially on pads with insulation or memory foam, being able to vacuum them down makes rolling and packing them away so much easier. I don't think I'll be upgrading to this new pump but I love that they're innovating and pushing the envelope. Air pumps are worth their weight and thats a fact.

I ordered one of these Zero Pumps, with extra battery and accessories during the Kickstarter Pledge Drive, back in September, but still have not received it, as of December 20. It was promised by the first of December but there have been issues with production and shipping. I don't know how many times I have almost lost the nozzle to my current flextail. It's my only complaint and this model solves that. Looks like a good upgrade. The only thing I would say is if you can fit the charger into the battery you can fit it into the device. It is one less thing flextail has to worry about but in my opinion they should reevaluate that decision.

I’m a Flextail Max Pump 2 user, fills my sleeping pad then doubles as my tent light, plus it will serve as a backup battery charger in a pinch. Just under 7oz but I now leave my other tent lantern home so I’m saving weight & space. I can see the benefit of a ThermARest tiny inflator but I’m really sold on the multi-use Flextail. As for hands free, clips onto the valve inflation, I’m ok holding the Flextail to the valve, it inflates my 30x78 Q-Core in under a minute..

I have an Olight torch/headtorch which uses CR123, I have a Fenix CL09 mini lantern for the tent which uses CR123. Both have a Fenix CR123 which has a slot in the battery to plug in micro USB and recharge it. The battery in the lantern is a backup for the headtorch if I need it. Using this pump, I could either not take a battery for it and share one between this and the lantern, or it could be an extra backup battery for the other two devices. Ideal choice for me!

I have the flextail 2 and it is easy to attach it to my thermarest and fill it hands free. I showed how in my Amazon review video. You attach an orange tip and put the small side of the rubber tip inside the orange tip. Then place the larger end of the rubber tip over the thermarest valve and let go of the pump. I’ve filled our klymit and exped pads hands free also. Saving 2 ounces might tempt me to purchase the new pump someday. But hands free is only an upgrade of having to use 1 tip instead of two tips.

This is the first time I watched a video and immediately went and bought it (or in this case, funded it!) I've bwen eyeing up the old ones for awhile, but they were always a little bulky and I didn't care about having a light on it. Price point was also too high for me. I used to have one of those Thermarest ones you mentioned (still do, actually), but it was bulky, noisy, batteries died quickly, and now it only fits the one old pad we don't use anymore. So ya, I've been hesitant. Good job. You sold me. 😅

Actually the Thermarest pump weights 2oz with batteries so they are about equal. The thermarest pump will inflate about 40 mattresses so it is still by far the efficiency leader. You can get adapters for most mattresses with it if you buy from Camp-Tek. That said, I think this is the first pump that does give the thermarest pump some serious competition. I still prefer the thermarest pump because of more inflates but I can see this being useful.

I love mine! I use it to inflate & deflate cycle my air mattress at home to get the humidty out. A simple slight modification made it so I can turn the batteries around to make the fan reverse.

I first starting using a pump when I hiked the Colorado Trail. I was worried about manually inflating a pad at 10,000 feet! Looks like I will need to upgrade - I never liked the idea of using a device that couldn't be recharged.

It looks like a great pump, but owning two of the previous models, I'd wait. Using the older version, it can blow up three Thermarest Mondo King pads with more available. I've been using the original for a couple of years now and it's great.

i love flextail pumps. but like others mentioned i probably won 't get this one, that's because i like the LED feature on the 2nd model. Really handy when i need a quick light and i can't find it or not wearing my headlight. Also the accidental button press happens, i solved it by wrapping a piece of plastic from a water bottle around my flextail and slide it down when i pack it up. But i do like the small form factor, i look forward to the 2nd version and if my old flextail led dies, i might consider it

Thanks Dan. After doing some sections of the PCT in August I decided a sleeping mat pump was a priority. I’ve just ordered (via your KZfaq link) and hopefully the pump will arrive before I do the Overland Track (Tasmania) in mid-November. Thank you for your great content!

Meh you'll be sleeping in huts or wooden platforms in borderline summer in Tassie... won't be any concern of moisture management or R value.

@@InfallibleDogbert actually, I won’t be sleeping in a hut but in my tent. I think you maybe unfamiliar with the extreme and fickle weather in sub-alpine region of central and western Tasmania. Oh man, your videos convinced me to get the flextail, so I got the orange one right before PCT days, and now this one comes out?! I will miss the light BUT the not having to hold it in place feature would be a huge plus with my rapide wide pad! and the fact that they reduced the noise is awesome! By the way ...still loving my outdoor vitals gear! It was super cool to meet you in person!

I just use a dry-bag manual pump. Even with a hole it still works. I don't like electronic/ mechanical pumps because there's too much that can go wrong with little possibility for repair in the field.

I just got a v2 of flex tail pump mainly because of 1. pump 2. embedded light! and then review to this one came out and was like, damn this one is lighter and smaller, but I have already bought v2, but then i figured out, that this one lacks a light, and also the battery needs to be extracted to charge. so I'm happy now, that I have v2, it Is great product

Sold! Love my current flextail but if its lighter and I dont have to hold it on the pad while running, its worth the upgrade to me. Losing the light is....meh, I honestly haven't used the light as often as I expected.
