"The Godfather" is a 1972 American crime film directed by "Francis Ford Coppola". Based on Puzo's 1969 novel of the same name, the film stars "Marlon Brando" & "Al Pacino" as the leaders of a powerful New York crime family. The story, spanning the years 1945 to 1955, centers on the transformation of Michael Corleone (Pacino) from reluctant family outsider to ruthless Mafia boss while also chronicling the Corleone family under the patriarch Vito Corleone (Brando).
The Godfather is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in world cinema and as one of the most influential, especially in the gangster genre. Now ranked as the second greatest film in American cinema (behind "Citizen Kane") by the American Film Institute, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1990.

Dirk Diggler the thing that made me sad is when Tom Hagen told Vito Corleone that Sonny died and when he said that Vito had a kind of exhale of sadness(when something sad happens you’d have a strong sad exhale) and sonny died trying to help his sister “Look how they massacred my boy” To me is one of the most iconic quote that I heard in a movie

Mike's interrogation technique is actually very feasible and practical. He confronts Carlo with his treachery and sits next to him instead of across from him, thus creating a more intimate approach. When Carlo doesn't admit his guilt, Mike undermines any confidence Carlo has by telling him that all the guys supporting him are dead. He offers him kindness by having a drink supplied, and reassures him that Mike has an emotional responsibility to him as his child's godfather. It's unthinkable that he would have Carlo killed. As Carlo is breaking, Mike gives him his false punishment to reassure Carlo that whilst he will be punished, it will simply be a removal from the business and a pseudo exile, far removed from the death he expected. It's easy for Carlo to buy this, because he fully expects to be punished somehow, so it's a relief to find that out. Mike even shows him the plane tickets to make the illusion real. The stages of interrogation there are brilliant. Asserting guilt, forming a conspiratorial environment, removal of support, a show of kindness and believable reassurance along with evidence of safety in a lesser punishment, right before having the guy murdered moments later. Mike Corleone is not someone to fuck with, clearly. :)

Everything Mike did was an insult to Carlo’s intelligence. Being close to a mafia family, betrayal is one thing they’d never forgive, if Carlo was half as smart as he thought himself to be, he’d know that. If the roles were reversed, Mike would never admit and if he did, he’d own up to it, expecting the maximum punishment, death!

One thing that always sticks out to me in this scene is the fact that Clemenza is the one who kills Carlo. If you recall, Clemenza was Sonny's godfather, so it actually seems pretty fitting that he's the one that kills Carlo in one of the most brutal ways. I mean almost all of the guys here go for the usual shooting option. But Clemenza went for something more prolonged and more personal.

This movie NEVER gets old. I love how they show the three varying degrees of leadership: Vito, old school, tough, but respected; Sonny, the hot head, shoot first, ask questions later; and Michael, the level headed one who develops a plan before acting. Absolutely fantastic film making; back when Hollywood knew what it was doing. (unlike today)

It was a good scene, but for me, the best scene in the movie - the one with absolutely off-the-charts writing and acting - was the death of Vito Corleone in the garden with his grandson. Beautifully acted by Brando, no distracting music, so realistically written and filmed simply, like a home movie. It got right to the heart of who the character was. The only other scene I can remember that grabbed me like that was the 'tank scene' in 'The Last Picture Show'. I know many won't agree with me, but that's just my opinion.

When I first saw this film - it didn't hit home because I was young and naive as one gets older you realized the gravity of being on your toes at all times. Also, when the Godfather said, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" it is so true. You find out who is your friend and your true enemy this way. After all, you can't always act your way through life all the time - you will let your guard down and spill the beans!

He felt his whole body go weak with terrible sickening fear. Standing in the doorway was Michael Corleone, his face the face of that death Carlo Rizzi saw often in his dreams. Behind Michael Corleone were Hagen and Rocco Lampone. They looked grave, like people who had come with the utmost reluctance to give a friend bad news. The three of them entered the house and Carlo Rizzi led them into the living room. Recovered from his first shock, he thought that he had suffered an attack of nerves. Michael’s words made him really sick, physically nauseous. “You have to answer for Santino,” Michael said. Carlo didn’t answer, pretended not to understand. Hagen and Lampone had split away to opposite walls of the room. He and Michael faced each other. “You fingered Sonny for the Barzini people,” Michael said, his voice flat. “That little farce you played out with my sister, did Barzini kid you that would fool a Corleone?” Carlo Rizzi spoke out of his terrible fear, without dignity, without any kind of pride. “I swear I’m innocent. I swear on the head of my children I’m innocent. Mike, don’t do this to me, please, Mike, don’t do this to me.” Michael said quietly, “Barzini is dead. So is Phillip Tattaglia. I want to square all the Family accounts tonight. So don’t tell me you’re innocent. It would be better for you to admit what you did.” Hagen and Lampone stared at Michael with astonishment. They were thinking that Michael was not yet the man his father was. Why try to get this traitor to admit guilt? That guilt was already proven as much as such a thing could be proven. The answer was obvious. Michael still was not that confident of his right, still feared being unjust, still worried about that fraction of an uncertainty that only a confession by Carlo Rizzi could erase. There was still no answer. Michael said almost kindly, “Don’t be so frightened. Do you think I’d make my sister a widow? Do you think I’d make my nephews fatherless? After all I’m Godfather to one of your kids. No, your punishment will be that you won’t be allowed any work with the Family. I’m putting you on a plane to Vegas to join your wife and kids and then I want you to stay there. I’ll send Connie an allowance. That’s all. But don’t keep saying you’re innocent, don’t insult my intelligence and ma ke me angry. Who approached you, Tattaglia or Barzini?” Carlo Rizzi in his anguished hope for life, in the sweet flooding relief that he was not going to be killed, murmured, “Barzini.” “Good, good,” Michael said softly. He beckoned with his right hand. “I want you to leave now. There’s a car waiting to take you to the airport.” Carlo went out the door first, the other three men very close to him. It was night now, but the mall as usual was bright with floodlights. A car pulled up. Carlo saw it was his own car. He didn’t recognize the driver. There was someone sitting in the back but on the far side. Lampone opened the front door and motioned to Carlo to get in. Michael said, “I’ll call your wife and tell her you’re on your way down.” Carlo got into the car. His silk shirt was soaked with sweat. The car pulled away, moving swiftly toward the gate. Carlo started to turn his head to see if. he knew the man sitting behind him. At that moment, Clemenza, as cunningly and daintily as a little girl slipping a ribbon over the head of a kitten, threw his garrot around Carlo Rizzi’s neck. The smooth rope cut into the skin with Clemenza’s powerful yanking throttle, Carlo Rizzi’s body went leaping into the air like a fish on a line, but Clemenza held him fast, tightening the garrot until the body went slack. Suddenly there was a foul odor in the air of the car. Carlo’s body, sphincter released by approaching death, had voided itself. Clemenza kept the garrot tight for another few minutes to make sure, then released the rope and put it back in his pocket. He relaxed himself against the seat cushions as Carlo’s body slumped against the door. After a few moments Clemenza rolled the window down to let out the stink. The victory of the Corleone Family was complete.

The difference between reading a book and watching a film is that with a book you get to be director and producer and you get to choose the actors and as a result the film the comes up in your mind is literally perfect. That's what makes a good book. So when you hear phrases like "the book was better" it just means that the film didn't match very much a person's mental film that came up while reading the book.

The reason why books are nearly always superior to the movies based on them is because the book captures inner dialogue of each character. Movies can't really do that unless they resort to narration, which would wreck any movie if employed to the level of detail that inner dialogue is done in a book. David Lynch even tried conveying inner dialogue in "Dune" by having each character's thoughts conveyed as whispers, and the movie sucked all the more for it.

It’s interesting cuz In the book Tom and the others find Michael insistance to speak to Carlo as trait that made him an inferior Don than Vito was. When I read it my understanding was that Tom and the others that it was a weak point.

The thing about this scene is that Mike is not 100% sure that Carlo did this, he has to get him to admit it before he kills his sisters husband, but once he does man, the vengeance the Corleone family loved each other, look at the fury in Mikes eyes when Carlo admits it, than that stroll or that bop as we called it in the black hoods, Mike is just too damn kool.

Eric Day Mike was 100% sure. He just wanted to know if it was Barzini or Tattaglia.
@StarfieldRailway

Jerry 85g, Mike wouldn't have done all of that just to find it out if was Barzini or Tattaglia. He had already had both of them killed. He put on the perfect act to get Carlo to reveal whether he had anything to do with Sonny's death. He was just trying to get to the truth. Carlo took the bait and admitted that he was in on Sonny's assassination, and that is why Carlo was killed. Carlo confessed indirectly, and he did it with a completely sincere look in his eyes. That is what Michael was looking for, and he found it. Without that, Michael would not have had Carlo killed.

Mike wanted to achieve both. To get the confession from Carlo so he could be 100% sure Carlo conspired against him and to also know whether Barzini or Tattaglia were involved, because Mike needed to know who was really behind all of this and which in the end it was indeed Barzini.

1:27 "Don't be afraid Carlo..." Carlo is crying because he knows he's a dead man. Chilling scene, and never believe a man who pats you on the back while he's giving you silent threats.

I don't think that he cries because he knows he's dead. When you are certain, absolutely certain that you will die, you don't cry any more. You only cry when you still think you can be spared.

It's criminal that Pacino didn't win an award for these two films. He starts of warm and caring and we see him over the two movies go from that to silent, distant, and emotionally detached from his life. I fully believe there is a single trigger for this and it involves a certain event when he is in hiding. I will admit I did grin when he avenged Sonny his death was brutal and Carlo deserved it.

I remember when I was younger and I would always hear " the Godfather is the best movie of all time" and I would always think " oh people are just saying that because it's old and it's a classic that everyone knows" but once I watched it for the first time I was like " Jesus Christ this really is the best movie of all time." Now it's one of my favorites.

You will also see it in the Simpsons. Every time they show the nuclear power plant, they have the audio of a crow call. It just sets a tone of gloom and foreboding. See Poe's "The Raven" for another example of the carrion cousin being used as a messenger of death and a dark future.
