WWE Hall of Famer, The Godfather joins Chris Van Vliet to discuss why he absolutely hated playing The Goodfather as a member of the RTC in 2001. The Godfather joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1992 as the character Papa Shango and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016.

I was a huge Godfather fan, but the gimmick was getting stale AF at the time and in my opinion him becoming the Goodfather was a great heel turn. They even put the tag titles on him and Bull, so overall it was a pretty good run for him, too bad he didn't like it.

I’d love to see Godfather return as a manager!! I kno MVP is been gold for Lashley but if they ever do have a split it’d be fuckin insane if Lashley does a reveal that he’s got Godfather backin him now n Godfather and MVP have brawl in suits with their canes!!

I loved RTC .Sure it’s probably not as fun for The Godfather but it truly was art imitating life.

I thought it was a clever idea and the best work from everyone involved. It was hilarious when Charles would beat his programming and revert back to being the Godfather. They could do some entertaining things using cancel culture. Have a job squad come out when something offensive is said and announce they are going to unfollow them, then get destroyed. The only thing dangerous about them is numbers. I thought that’s what retribution was going to be.

Kinda it was getting all sorts of heat back then from all sides. AOL Time Warner had the money to outbid TNN (Spike) if they had wanted to keep wrestling on TNT. In other words the real reason WCW died, isn't because of their ratings, or because WCW ever got as edgy as WWF, because they hadn't. Wrestling had gotten this stigma as "low class" entertainment for decades already. By the late 90s/early 00s it was "low class" and irredeemably violent, sexual, profane, and mocked the religious. So while say Comedy Central stood by South Park, MTV defended jackass, Jerry Springer was syndicated, wrestling was down to USA, UPN and TNT and TBS. Ted Turner was out so defending his own love of wrestling was gone and VKM was back to being at the mercy of two channels who took a lot of flak for keeping WWF.

I loved RTC, but thinking back, IDK if Godfather was really a fitting choice for the faction, as hilarious as the name change was. I admit, I first knew him as the Goodfather, so I thought that was his ring name throughout his career.

Refreshing that Godfather isn't a mark who takes wrestling too seriously, like some, *cough* Bret Hart. He understands the point of the wrestling business is fun + money. No reason at all to constantly be on the road and destroy your body, if you are not enjoying performing.

I’m sure if Godfather grew up in the Hart Family he would have an entirely different perspective. Bret was fed, clothed , & housed from wrestling his entire life, it’s his family’s identity. Obviously he’s going to take it far more serious than most. A fan calling someone a mark is literally the most “ mark “ thing someone could say. All fans are marks
