Battles Without Honor and Humanity also known in the West as The Yakuza Papers, is a Japanese yakuza film series produced by Toei Company. Its Inspired by a series of magazine articles by the journalist Kōichi Iiboshi. that are in turn based on memoirs originally written by real life Yakuza members.
The films detail a kick ass trip through the rise of the yakuza in post war Japan. Beginning in 1945 and traveling through the next 12 or so years this is the tale of a group of friends who come together in order to survive the cruelties of post-war, and post-bomb Japan and then spend the next decade killing each other as they change sides in an ongoing gang war.

@bushidoblues9302 I did bjj for 3 years. But about 6 months ago was involved in a bad accident. I'm alot better but while I was recovering I found myself meditating while swinging a dull (iaito) katana around... It was better than therapy.. Bought a katana and wakisashi and have not looked back since! Highly recommend. I'm still trying to find a place to stream At rivers edge!! Lol

Binged these 4 films pretty much in one night, it’s great, though the re-use of various actors sometimes got confusing, it was a great series and i really appreciated the intrigue, and political maneuvers that really made this one shine over similar era yakuza films. Kinji fukasaku is a master of the genre. Would be curious to know if you’ve seen any of the Seijun Suzuki films namely Tokyo drifter, one of the most stylish and beautiful yakuza films I’ve seen.

Tokyo Drifter has best theme song ever for me. Definitely a movie I watch every three or four years.

I liked Parts 1 and 2 the best. 2 is my favorite. Part 3 was a bit slow, but ended well. 4 was pretty good also. 5th movie wrapped up everything pretty well. Punished Hirono was pretty cool.

Fun fact initially in the US they only had the 1st, 3rd & 4th movie released as Yakuza Papers. At least in the video stories in Chinatown. If you can check out Yakuza Wives. I know the first two are easy to get.

Personally I’d argue it’s closer to Roger Corman’s The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre and the Valachi Papers. The Nihon no don trilogy is more Godfather-y than Battles I think.

@@imangryatnews7858 for a cheaper alternative, look for any of those cheap 30-50 movie packs (They used to make them for Martial Arts movies as well as Westerns, Sci-Fi, and Horror) a lot of the movies are just old schlock that is in the public domain, but there are a few gems. I bought a 50 movie pack for 30 dollars that had The Street Fighter 1-3 and Sister Street Fighter. So I considered it a deal. In the pack I found a film called Fighting Mad about a Black US Soldier betrayed by his friends and left for dead on a Philipphine Island and is taken in and taught the sword by 2 Japanese soldiers who have been in hiding since WW2 (Movie was set during Vietnam) what was interesting about it was some of the dialog was lifted by Quinten Tarentino and used in Kill Bill.

SUGAWARA Bunta is a great actor. Check out the COLD WIND MONJIRO series. To me CHIBA Shinichi over acted until his later years. Noboru Andô is a great Yakuza actor also ..A real life Yakuza in his early years.
