@user-ne1gh9ue8l2 ай бұрын
I do not see there that Sofía Coppola's performance deserves the avalanche of criticism that it brought at the time, quite the opposite. She herself made it clear that being an actress was not her desire at all. To my understanding, she played the role of a young and innocent girl, with high education and respect for family tradition, still oblivious to the machinations of her mafia family. Her ignorance or lack of knowledge of the world in which her relatives operate makes her pure soul. She is a timeless, atypical and iconic beauty, which shows her character to be healthily captivating and the young age of both the actress and the character justifies her inexperience, perhaps, and that definitely works in her favor! Everything is calculated in Mary Corleone's performance, right down to her blatant challenge to her father (the basket scene), her half-conscious expression of reality ("you are using me to pull the strings" in the attic), her immature whimsy on the stairs that will lead to her death... Perfect performance and tragic unfair ending.
@ianmeyer66936 ай бұрын
I dont get the criticism of her.. she seems a lot like the rich Italian girls I’ve come across in my life. She seemed very authentic. I think the fact that she was pretty but not a bombshell added to the credibility/realism.

@@francofan100 This video of her clips is in the vault at the Library of Congress so future generations are guaranteed the opportunity to bask in the greatness of this cinematic performance. The real reason that she was not nominated for an Oscar, was because she would have swept them all up! I've heard the lore, but...honestly, she's really not that bad. It's subtle. And again, an actor is as good, in part, because of the direction they take. I've certainly seen much, much worse. Untrue. Mermaids was already shot. She flew to Rome after she wrapped Mermaids. She was set to film her first scene and was a no show the day filming for her was to begin. She, so they claim, could not get out of bed to film, as she was so exhausted. A doctor was brought on set, and they were informed that if she filmed anything she would suffer a breakdown on set. She flew home the next day. The only thing they have for her as far as filming is concerned are her wardrobe fittings that they shot the day before she allegedly could not get out of bed.@@lostNxbox29

In retrospect I don't think a seasoned actor could have done this her role better - conversely, don't forget Sofia was also in Rumble Fish playing. For G3 she brings a certain unawareness and naive confidence as Mary. She was about the same age as her character, has a powerful successful Italian father like Mary, and experienced the unearned privilege Mary had. When the film came out , critics went in a group tizzy panning her performance. But if a Wynona Ryder or a similar actor (who is one of my favorite actors) had played the role I'm not sure we get the loss of innocence and tragedy when Mary is killed., her death symbolizes Michael's sins being revisited upon him, (he killed not just his brother, but the son of his mother and father, Michael is the one who commits the ultimate sin in the history of all three narratives. Sofia Coppola is one of my favorite writer/directors and Lost in Translation inspired my recent short film - full disclosure.

Because the actress who was originally meant for the role was murdered day's before the film started shooting so Coppola had to use his daughter for the role or cancel the filming of godfather part 3 which meant million's of dollars would be lost look up the story behind why Sophia got the part

You realize they don't really have sex in movies. Idk what's worse, the fact that you think its real, or the fact you think it's real and aren't bothered that she got murdered in the movie. We have a weird culture where sex, the thing that creates life and feels good = evil and disgusting But extreme violence, gore and pain are accepted with open arms

some of the scenes aren’t completely awful, like the cafe scene is decent. it sounds like they overdubbed a Lot of her lines, like they weren’t even mixed into the scene right. she sounds like she’s somewhere completely different.

Acting so bad the ending was unexpectedly satisfying

I said the same thing lol. I just wish they put that part at the beginning so we didn't have to suffer through the whole movie with her in it. Michael should have just Fredo'd her in the first 10 minutes........
