I had the chance to see the first film in 4k in theatres and it was so clean, besides the obvious grain from the camera and the colors were spot on. One of the best movie going experiences

I saw The Godfather in Dolby Cinema and for a movie that was released in 1972, it was an AMAZING restoration and experience. Well done to Francis Ford Coppola and the restoration team!

My wife has been dying to watch these, they're some of her favorites. I've never seen them and I told her I refused to watch them until the 4Ks came out, so I ordered the Special Collector's Edition 4K. Super stoked to get to finally experience these.

For me it was actually the other way around: they kept the softness of the original films, but the HDR is such a massive and very noticeable improvement that you are finding new colors in every scene that were not there before.

I’m super jealous! This is one of my “Holy Grail” 4K releases I’ve been waiting for.

To give Coppola credit, at least he still allows us to have the original Godfather 3 in 4K… unlike another certain filmmaker.

I have a small 50" 4k TV, watch my 4k discs on a PS5, yet this channel still is my go-to-place for all 4k & physical :) So happy this exists

I wish they'd charge a little more and give us stronger higher quality, maybe even glossed carboard, for the exterior box. This is the Godfather and certainly deserves high quality packaging.

Great review Jeff! I was waiting for fhis one. It's wonderful that this project was not rushed like some other releases and that Paramount put in the attention and resources that this great historical movie trilogy deserves.

The Godfather cinematographer Gordon Willis' superb 35mm photography transfered to 4K looks far better than Gemini Man or any digitally shot movie.

Can't wait to watch the films in 4k. Seems like companies are really dropping the ball on quality packaging. The deluxe version doesn't look movie shelf friendly and the standard packaging looks super cheap.

The moment I saw this release I traded in my old blu-rays (including Coda). I can’t wait to see the 4K restorations.

Great review! I was fortunate to have seen the first movie at the age of 13 in the theatres at the time of the original release. The film definitely had a very subdued color palette and I'm glad to hear that they kept this new transfer faithful. It was always a gritty looking picture. In those days, certain films were only playing in limited theatres and I recall that the theatre I had seen it in played the film for numerous weeks--at least 20!--maybe more ...everyone was talking about the film and loved the film and the only complaint you would hear at the time of release was that folks had a hard time understanding Brando's dialog.

Great review. Godfather is the definition of true classic. It’s a shame they didn’t bundle the blu rays considering the price. The collectors edition does but looks like they’re cardboard slide in style rather than click in. Look forward to your next vid!

Just watched Godfather 1, I think it was gorgeous on 4K. HDR was on point. It was by far the best the movie has ever looked to me (I was not around when it actually played in the theatres). A must have I have been waiting for, didn't buy the dvd's. Godfather 2 is next up!

Thanks for the review and information. I only had it on dvd so looking forward to the 4K, have it preordered. Never seen the Coda version of part 3 so interested to see what he did with that (I think 3 is better than most give it credit for, but obviously not as great as one and two).

Pre-ordered the gift set as soon as it was announced and the restoration looked great in theaters. Psyched that the home media release is so good I’m HYPE

I'm actually really looking forward to buying just the remastered Blu ray set. I love regular Blu too when they're mastered from the 4k scans

Thanks for the review, Jeff. I was NOT aware there was a completely new 4K scan done on the films, so I'm really looking forward to that. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my collector's edition next week or so, but I saw someone else do an unboxing of the CE and was REALLY disappointed in the packaging, with the films arriving in cardboard slips within the CE book, much like the Star Wars films or the Hitchcock collection. That's a terrible way to package these films and make them extremely hard to get out. Grrrr!

I was hoping to get a review of this collection before buying. I have grown to trust your reviews of movies and I will be picking this up on release day. The only thing I am bummed out about is that they are not including Blu-ray discs. I'll just keep my Blu-ray box set and pick up the 4K addition. I hope this does not become a trend with studios releasing a 4K set and not including Blu-rays.

Bought this when it first came out as the limited edition box set, very happy with it. Now the limiting factor because the environment I'm watching in, need a home theatre!

I've only seen the first and part of the second and that was years ago so I couldn't tell you what happens so when I get this in 4k it'll be like watching for the first time. Super excited.

Hello- I have to say I much prefer the original ending of Part III as released Dec. 1990. it has a more operatically tragic feel to it.

The 1991 cut of Part III isn't even avaliable on digital anymore even if you wanted to buy it separately, he's damn near pulling a Lucas but at least he's smart enough to know some people like the alternate cuts and they're all here, even the actual theatrical cut.

Theres one scene in part 3 that is NOT in CODA, which makes the original cut superior all by itself. After Michael has a stroke theres a scene where connie, vincent, and Neri are in the chapel discussing the hit on Zasa. And Connie gives the final, "Do it!"--that scene is so great and its cut from Coda? Why?

Just got my set tonight. I must say in the special edition set it may be worth buying a seperate disk case, as the disc's were sliding when I opened the book. Not very secure in the cardboard place holder.

So happy to watch this great review. I think I will get the other edition, even if I have to wait for a sale. I like the art, but those flimsy cases drive me nuts with their spines that have literal gaps. The type of box cover with the karate kid set would have been great.

I saw Godfather 1 and 2 in a theater in the 1990s before the digital era, and I remember that it looked reeeally dark. The picture had to be brightened up for DVDs and regular Blu-rays because otherwise black detail would be lost. This is exactly why we need HDR, so that more shades of a color (in this case, black) can be shown in a digital representation. Note that HDR pertains only to digital content. Before the digital era, theaters that projected physical prints ALREADY showed movies in HDR. That's because celluloid captures the real thing, with all shades of colors. Moviegoers from 1900s to 1970s already saw HDR in theaters, so WE are the backward ones, not they. We need HDR in our digital video just to make our imperfect digital transfer look closer to the real thing. That's because digital content is not the real thing unlike celluloid; it is only an **approximation** of the real thing. If you magnify a digital video or photo 100 times, you only see a grid of solid color blocks; whereas a blow-up of a celluloid still shows smooth beautiful film grain. Now we realize the SDR colors of RGB=256/256/256 that we have been using can't approximate close enough to the colors of the real thing captured on film negatives. That's why we need HDR, which has RGB=1024/1024/1024 colors, allowing greater range of colors to be shown. So I look forward to seeing this UHD Blu-ray, hoping the deep, subtle black levels will be better represented, bringing us closer to Gordon "Prince of Darkness" Willis' groundbreaking vision. Some viewers won't be pleased, of course. They think HDR = brightness like you said. That's not exactly true. HDR is all about better colors.

I believe Zaavi is doing something alittle better on the box. But I’m really discouraged with these studios being so lazy and cheap on the boxes. It just makes them look bad. Many new box sets are coming with high quality cases. Especially steelbook boxes.

Man I'm still trying to decide on getting this or the collectors edition. Maybe I should wait for a price drop?

I got the special box of this, which is such a nice collectible piece. Only watched Part 1 so far, and I totally agree with you about it looking how it should. Nothing crazy, but it looks perfect for what it is. Looking forward to sitting down with part 2!

Just got mine yesterday and started watching. I would say it looks very authentic. I never saw CODA, so I'm exited about seeing that for the first time.

I saw Part III in the theaters as a 16 year old, without ever having seen the first two films, and I was totally lost. I've only had the films on DVD, and I'm thinking of picking up the 2K Blu-ray set.

I'm totally sold. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a week or 2 to make sure there's no disc recalls.

I can't wait for mine. I preordered this set the minute I found out about it.

Definitely gonna grab this, but not now. Black Friday will be here soon enough and I'm thinking it will be under 50 bucks. Which is about what I think this should go for any way. And if there are any hiccups in the video or sound, hopefully they can catch that and have that fixed before I buy. Jeff thanks so much for all you do in this area. I just wish that Coppla would release the Godfather Epic version. It was on HBO not that long ago. It had Godfather 1 and to in chronologic order plus it had so much extra footage. It was originally on TV but cut. Then they released it on VHS as an epic with the uncut version with the restored scenes. You had to watch it in a couple of viewings but it was Fantastic. Like watching a new movie. I would like to have the 4k version of that film.

I bought the limited edition set ... it's wild, there's a book where the discs are within after about 30 pages of photos, in ... yes, cardboard sleeves. It also comes with three prints they created so people could frame them if they want. The book and prints come within a case that's foil-embossed. It's a nice presentation, but it is not compact by any means.

I've been waiting for this review!
