The Aesir, more commonly known as the Asgardians who formerly resided on Asgard and ruled over the nine realms - those being Asgard, Midgard, Jotunheim, Svartalfheim, Vanaheim, Musphelheim, Niflheim, Nidavellir, and Alfeim.
For a complete breakdown of the nine realms, check out our video on that.
The oldest member of the Aesir we know of currently is Buri, the father of Bor who in turn is the father of Odin. Bor fought back the Dark Elves thousands of years before Thor’s birth. Once his son, Odin rose to become king of Asgard, he and his daughter Hela conquered the other 8 realms and united them under Odin’s violent banner.
But after Hela’s ambition outgrew Odin’s own, he banished her and then fathered his second child Thor, defeated the frost giants and adopted his second son, Loki.
Here is where the Aesir began to leave their imprint on Midgard, becoming deities to the mortals on earth. Humankind, seeing the Aesir as gods began worshiping them and telling stories of
Odin, the Allfather
Thor, the god of Thunder
Tyr the god of war and justice
Lady Sif and the Warriors Three
The Valkyries
Heimdall the watchman of the gods.
As well as Frigga, known to midgard as Frigg
As well as other various Aesir
Of course, the norse mythology in the MCU runs deep, but these are the main players earth knows of and writes stories about. Of course, they would be unaware of Hela just as Thor was, but midgard also spoke of other godlike beings within the 9 realms such as the Frost Giants, Ruled by Laufey and true father of Loki - the norse god of Mischief. They also spoke of Surtur, the demon king of Muspelheim who was prophesied to bring the end of Asgard during Ragnarok. Not to mention Malekith and the Dark Elves who could also be considered godlike.
While The various gods of the nine realms were popular amongst the North Germanic People, across the globe, another pantheon was being adored by their loyal followers - those gods being the Ennead worshiped by both the Egyptians and Wakandans.
A lot less is known about the true history of these gods or why they were worshiped separately by two different groups, but what we do know is that after the meteorite of Vibranium landed in Wakanda millions of years ago, a warrior shaman known as Bashenga was visited by the Panther goddess, Bast who led him to the heart-shaped herb which gave him the power to become the first Black Panther and the protector of Wakanda.
We also know that the Wakandans worship Sekhmet, the lioness goddess of healing who alongside Bast guides Wakandan souls to the green valley, or the astral dimension.
Within the marvel comics, Sekhmet and Bast are both related to Khonshu - The god of the moon and vengeance who first appears in Moon Knight and empowers and guides his avatar, Marc Spector. Whether or not these 3 gods will be related in the MCU remains to be seen, but it seems likely as these familial relationships are very well established within the Norse Pantheon.
According to Harrow, Khonshu was apparently banished by the other Ennead for his legendary temper tantrums - however, this may not end up being accurate. Only time will tell.
Additionally, Ammit is established as the antagonist of the series, working through Arthur Harrow to cleanse the world of sin via judgment. She nearly accomplished her goal years ago, but was betrayed by her fellow gods as well as her previous Avatar and killed. And speaking of Avatars, Marc Spector is the Avatar of Khonshu and Harrow will likely become Ammit’s Avatar by the end of the series, so following this logic - it’s likely that the Black Panther is the avatar of Bast.
The other gods of this pantheon that are referenced in Moon Knight are Atum, Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, Osiris, Isis, Set, Nepthys and Horus.

Question, would the scarlet witch be considered a god like being since it is stated that there is a whole chapter devoted to her in the dark hold, has powers that exceed the Sorcerer supreme, and peeks of her having a temple of her to worship in, not to mention it was stated she was never born but forged. She is one of the most powerful being trending so would it make sense to consider her a god?

I'm sure the eternals being folded into local lores can be explained by them having relationships with the pantheons. They did mention thor as a kid in the Eternals right?

The comics just had them coexisting in Ancient Greece & sometimes being confused for one another. The Olympians lived on Mount Olympus & the Olympian Eternals lived in Greece's Pindus Mountains.

Shang-Chi also introduced Ta Lo, the realm of the Chinese gods in the comics (like Asgard or Olympus). Although we only saw the mortals who lived there (known as the Qilin Riders in the comics).

I don't think you mentioned this, but the Jabari tribe does worship Hanuman, the Hindu Monkey God as seen when T'Challa accepts M'Baku's challenge to the throne. Timestamp is 24:32 of Black Panther. An interesting theory about this that my friend brought up to me goes like this: In Hindu Myth's Ramayana, the warrior Lakshmana is injured in a battle and needs saving. To save him, Hanuman is told to bring a special herb with magical healing properties that grows on a mountain. Not knowing which herb to pick, Hanuman brings the entire mountain with him so that someone who knows the herb can take it themselves. It's never really mentioned where he put the mountain down and my friend brought up the theory that he could've put it down in Wakanda before the meteorite struck, making the herb a prototype Heart-shaped herb and giving a reason why the Jabari worship him. Idk how possible it is, I just thought it was cool. Great Video as Always!

This is indeed very cool... damn. But, sidenote here, the "Glory to Hanuman" phrase was infact improvised by the actor playing M'Baku, as he worships Hanuman in real life. So I don't think the lore matters that much.

Actually, there are strong migratory links between Cameroon and India, the Tamil Nadu language actually has roots in Northern Cameroon's Madara people. This can be seen through alot of Asian (especially East Asian cultures); there's a reason why most deities were painted black, even Buddha. This can also be seen with naming cultures, most West African societies pre-colonialization put family name first, then personal name. This is very prevalent in Japan, China and South Korea even today. In my birth certificate that's how my name's were arranged too, and I was birn in the 90's so, it's a newly fading culture in West Africa. When I was in LA, I had a funny experience with a korean Uber driver who kept passing me because he was looking for an Asian client based on my name sounding Korean. We laughed about it afterwards but I didn't realize then how profound that experience was and how telling it was. So, the more appropriate phrasing is, Indians are worshiping African deities, not the other way around.

While their relationship with Bast is a bit different from Mark's connection to Konshu their functionality is similar enough to where the black panther can be classified as an avatar to an Egyptian god. The main difference being that the black panther's power comes from a material substance rather than pure mysticism and the fact that Bast doesn't communicate directly with her avatar, preferring to relay messages through visions while letting her avatar have a great deal of autonomy.

It's just not the same. Avatars are imbued with the power of their god and have a direct connection whereas the black panther is merely physically enhanced by an herb and wears a fancy suit.

While the names of Greek gods and the names of the Eternals present an issue withing the story of the MCU there are some workarounds that can be used. One in particular that comes to mind id that the real Zues was so impressed by Thena and Phastos that he named some of his children after them while the Eternals were chilling in ancient Greece.

You could also spin it with one joke in the new Thor movie, just have Zeus make a quip about god's having a sense of humor, even Celestials naming some of their dolls after his children.

@@efanferdiantowibowo9610 They established the Eternals are semisentient robots that protect planets/Celestial eggs until they hatch and then the protectors are reset and sent out to protect other planets/eggs. The eternals have had countless identities since the begining of time, their names being riffs on existing dieties makes more sense than they themselves being the source of god claims. It is also more easily explained away with little effort as a joke.

I think Thor’s line in the original movie was something to the affect of “where I come from magic and science are one and the same” which may imply that the explanation for magic as a function in the MCU is ultimately logical and somehow scientific more so than that the gods are not magical gods.

I mean, with the Ancient One's explanation to Strange about magic and what we know so far, magic spells in the MCU are basically "programs to access and borrow power from other entities/realms". It does fall under science to a point, just not human science

I love the idea of Kang, or more accurately, a regular dude, becoming so powerful he dwarfs every god (or godlike) creature in the MCU, who was basically born into that power.

The Black Panther Goddess Bast is based off the Bastet the kemetic goddess of cats and warfare and fertility . Nice Video. I want to clarify something, Kang doesn't do everything he wants. For example, he can't interfere a cosmic being destroying a planet (unless he destroys the universe itself), For sure he knows that's gonna happen, and if it doesn't happen he can reset the timeline, but just because he wants it he can't kill a Celestial with normal ways unless he sends them to Alioth with the rest of the universe. TVA Agents are still basic humans and they struggle with likes of Loki and Sylvie, so they have literally zero chance against even people like Hela & Surtur or Scarlet Witch, let alone cosmic beings like Celestials & Dormammu. They are also pretty much tech guys, so they probably can't also interfere other dimensions too, like Afterlife dimensions or God dimensions such as the place where Egyptian Gods live (Khonsu etc). We know every universe has its set of dimensions, we saw Alternate Dark dimension, Ancestral Plane etc in What If series...., but anything happened in main universe/ main dimensions' timeline, they can control it for sure.

He can't delete the evil / bad things from universe. He can't just erase an event from the timeline just because he wants it. He knows Eternals will stop Tiamut. Because if they don't Kang will never born. But can he really interfere and stop the birth of Tiamut unless he prune the universe? No he can't. He knows Strange will stop Dormammu. But if he don't. He has no chance except prune that timeline.

@@sozkskslssss1018 OK maybe he isn't above everything but he controls the timeline, he was the winner of a Timeline war were he used Alioth to erase all other timelines aside from the sacred one, which in theory erased all variant versions of Arishem for example up to that point. It's posible that he chose a Timeline were the events happen in a way that don't create trouble with the celestials. We technically don't know if the Sacred timeline is HWR original timelime, after all as seen in Endgame you don't need your past self to exist for you to exist, cause if the past changes It's no longer your past but an alternative timeline, so HWR doesn't need Kang to be born, actually since Kang started the Multiversal War it will make sense for HWR to chose a timeline where he isn't born. Also the control of HWR can explain why Dr strange plan in Infinity War worked, Thanos Snap was random so there was a big chance of Tony dying and being unable to develop timetravel to get the IS in the past, but If Kang erases all posible outcomes except the one where Strange visión works it make some sense that it happens

Well, He Who Remains allowed those events to happen during Loki. The TVA never really had any other issues pruning anyone else to our knowledge (at least from what I remember). Also, if he REALLY wanted to kill a single Celestial, he could easily do that with Alioth. As for controlling the events of the timeline, or confronting characters like Strange, Wanda, etc. he can easily do that as well by changing events far in the past by using the TVA (as he knows every event throughout history past, present, and future) He was only ever confronted by Loki and Sylvie because he allowed it to happen.

I’m loving how Marvel is explaining all the different Pantheons of gods within the MCU. It surprisingly fits quite well among the foundations of the MCU. I can’t wait to see Gorr the God Butcher in Thor Love and Thunder and I also can’t wait to see the introduction of the Greek Pantheon of Gods and Demi gods like Zeus and Hercules. I’ve heard rumors that Russel Crowe is playing Zeus. If that’s the true then we’re going to be in for a treat! On a side note, I’d love to see Knull the god of the Symbiotes and Exolons in all of his glory with his Necrosword. With that being said, because Sony has the film rights to Venom, I don’t particularly see Marvel showcasing Knull within the MCU unless they plan on doing a serious and full blown crossover with Venom. Lastly, I thought it was a nice touch and a very cool detail that when the Eternals stopped Tiamut’s birthing, he was turned into stone, more specifically marble. The reason as to why I find that so cool is because there are hundreds of mountains, mountain ranges, and massive standing rocks and boulders that look strikingly like the giants of ancient times which are called the Titans. There’s even a group of people who believe that these Titans were in fact flesh and blood and alive at one point in time before they were turned to stone. So it’s very cool to see Marvel pulling from all sorts of mythology from around the world.

I’m sorry, but having a bunch of aliens that all just happen to super closely resemble the local pantheon of gods, just happen to land in the same area that said gods operate, then making an agreement to represent and substitute for each other, is just silly and needlessly complicated. You’d have to be completely blinded by comic bias, to try and convince anyone that that’s good story telling. What most likely happened, is one writer wrote the Greek gods as being actual godly beings. Then another writer tried to make up an alien species as the origin of the greek gods. Then some other poor writer got stuck with the unfortunate task of trying to make both of these things work within the same setting. The MCU had the chance to avoid this mess. All they had to do was pick either Eternals or Olympians. Not both.

I personally love how detailed the MCU is becoming with it's lore, but I've got to point out how confusing it's becoming regarding gods within it. First Thor was a god but now he's just a super strong alien, then celestials came in so they were the real gods, but now there's actual mythical gods like Khonshu, then you have He Who Remains just chilling outside of time, so is he more powerful than the gods for that? it's quite a lot to take in at the minute is all.

God's are just beings who are different or more powerful than humans. They maybe more intelligent but not any less prone to emotions like humans. Kang is just a human, a really smart one from the future. He seems godlike because his technology/intelligence is so advanced he seems godlike to people of the present his past. It's the same thing if Tony stark went back in time with the Ironman suit. Is he a God no, but his power is real and would seem godlike to past people.

There's lots of retcons in the comics, especially the shifting origin of Earth's pantheons. Some of them have existed long before humans. And some reveal to be sub-minds of bigger gods. The Japanese god Amatsu-Mikaboshi was revealed to be an extension of the Cosmic entity knows as Lord Chaos (the universal embodiment of chaos).

i think mephisto is the only big on that you missed. cool video! i also do want to add that at least in some of the comics the watchers are shown to have god like power over reality but simply don't use them based on there oaths to just be observers. I'm excited to see how many gods we actually get to meet in love and thunder. oh also maybe the vampire god from blade? but idk if that counts as the mcu yet or anything

Maaan how cool would an infinity war like trilogy be but in the form of a novel story about a battle between theologies/god pantheons. Idk if that is already in the comics but seems plausible based on this video!

Favorite gods in marvel comics... The shinto gods: sun goddess amaterasu and fox god Inari are the coolest one... As Yazata gods I want to see Mithras god of all lights and stars, verethragna the God of victory, competition, war and anahita goddess of water and women.. I think all those 5 would be interesting to see.. Also mithras been very active in hyborian age of marvel. Fun idea maybe Jesus was his avatar as mark spencer is for konshu
