In this new episode of Sartorial Talks entitled "The Golden Age of Men's Style", Hugo welcomes Marc Guyot, a famous Parisian menswear designer who is among the last clothiers in the world to specialise in the 1920s to 1950s men's style. During this show, Hugo and Marc Guyot speak about the "Peaky Blinders" and "Boardwalk Empire" phenomenons and also about the fascination of the sartorial cognoscenti for the professional magazine "Apparel Arts" (published in the 1930s). So far Hugo, I think Marc is probably the most delightful guest you ever had on the show...I swear, such a genuine artist. Not overpriced items, good quality, uniqueness, true to lineage and style and very down to Earth...for an average guy like myself, he really won my heart...I would definitely be his customer at a certain point. Thank you for introducing me to this genius!

Took me a while to embrace the 'spectator' shoes as a throwback to when they were worn more often. OMG, what great compliments I get! It takes a little confidence to wear any shoe with the white or Latte (from Ace Marks) with brown or black contrast leather. These shoes originated from sporting shoes and are usually worn from May through August. Some past British Royalty embraced them completely. I have some brown shoes with light and dark suede leather combinations that can be worn any time of year and combined with some suede jackets to match the suede in the shoes. Awsome look guys with the addition of a Tilbury hat? I am a British ex-pat of pensionable heritage living in New York and Marc you are an icon for the vintage British style and quality. Just wonderful, thank you.

Really enjoyed this. First time watching your channel after seeing you on Foster & Heath. When I was growing up in the 1950s my grandfather always took me out to get a new suit each spring. He taught me how to tie a tie , about the proper length of shirts and jacket sleeves and the fall of the pant leg on the shoe. So much of that is gone today. It was interesting about the talk of old cloth that isn't made anymore and how things have changed. When I was in London in 1969, I went to Regent St and purchased three different types of material to have suits made. Life came along with a family and I couldn't afford to have custom suits made.Forty years late, when I could afford it I took the material to a tailer and was told that the material was garbage and that there were better ones available now. I ended up throwing the material out. It broke my heart. Wish I had held onto it now. Now that I've watched till the end, I must add that I too can be comfortable in a suit (as long as it fits properly) as well as shorts and a tee shirt on the beach.

What a fabulous interview and discussion. I agree entirely regarding “no such thing as a black suit” (in principle), though I understand why Hugo bought his 29th (?) suit in black for funerals, as he is a complete addict by this point, and a navy wouldn’t do :) It was also nice to have a little more of the history of suiting, especially England (being English myself). In fact, I’m from Norfolk, and my father used to shoot. I remember fondly both the smells of his shotguns being cleaned and shoes being polished, and remember clearly his plus 4s and full Norfolk shooting attire. Plus, the Tweed overcoat! Smartest I ever saw him look…

Speaking as an Australian, the Cricket Blazer is still very much a rich part of the history, tradition and culture of the sport. The first matches between Australia. and England go back to 1876/77 and Blazers were worn then and still are by all the Cricket playing nations involved in international contest, worn for all formal events and photographs, proudly emblazoned with the national Coat of Arms of those countries. In the very early years of the game ties were even worn tucked into long sleeved, button down shirts. Flannel trousers were worn until the 1960's before cotton took over. Cricket boots were custom made. Cable knit sweaters (a personal favourite of mine) were and still are worn as is the traditional cricket cap. If you have the slightest interest you can find photographs going back especially through the 1920's - 1960's with players with their blazers over the top of their long sleeved cable knit sweater with their flannel trousers, perhaps a scarf, all in pristine white topped off with their caps. The epitome of sporting sartorial style.

The afore mentioned “Irish Cap” is often called a “Newsboy Cap”(based on the paperboys of the time), not to be confused with the “Baker Boy Cap” of the mid sixties. Peaked Panel Caps can often get mixed with the ones golfers wear, so if anyone is looking to buy one online the term “Newsboy Cap” will yield better results .

Hi Hugo (and Marc!) I think this must be my favourite video of yours this year! Right up my street (as we say in the UK). Every single day I dress in a style somewhere between The Peaky Blinders and Mr Guyot. I was inspired to dress like this since I was 16-17 years old and inherited the wardrobe of my late grandfather (who grew up in the 1920s and 30s!). I realised I had my own niche style and have never looked back. Over 40 years later, I'm no richer but luckily I do have a good eye for charity shop and vintage shop bargains! It's still possible to dress well on a budget if you know what suits you. However, if I were to win the lottery I would be straight down to Marc's shop, believe me! Ha ha! Greetings from Birmingham (the home of the Peaky Blinders)!

Dear Hugo and Sonia, please could you do a video on how you would do wedding outfits using your own wardrobe as examples. Formal, semi-formal or beach. I’m going to a wedding and its semi-formal and I have absolutely no trust in anyone else’s advice because I know I end up looking like everyone else. It will be held at Yacht club starting in the afternoon in August. Any advice would really help. You don’t have to do a video but it would be an amazing one.

Hey Hugo, this is totally offtopic, but do you think it would be possible to create a suit with no seams? That is to say, instead of stitching two pieces of fabric together... you would weave them together to create a seamless joint. It would surely cost many tens of thousands of dollars, but it is techincally possible right? A suit with no visible seams or even stitching, just fabric

Dear friend, actually I never thought about it and in my humble opinion it would not bring anything great in terms of style (if even possible). Cheers, Hugo

This style of dressing is wonderful. I greatly appreciate the skill of the tailor and the cut of these glorious fabrics. I would love to have the Swan Wing shoes in an array of colors. Can they be made for a woman?

Dear Peggy, first of all many thanks for your appreciation. And to answer your inquiry, yes! The swan wing derby has been developped for ladies too! Don't hesitate to visit our websites, mine and my wife's one. She's in charge of all the women department, but since we are one and work together, there has been some crossover between our collections, the swan wing derby being one of them! :)

Peaky is great, but Downton Abbey blows it away. Peaky is a lot of dark suits and overcoats. Downton is real style with many prints and colors. Especially the women's, just amazing.
@SARTORIALTALKS

Dear Gregory, we can't compare the two. Downtown is taking place in a manor of English nobility, hence the high level garments (including a lot of White Tie formal outfits for each dinner). Peaky is taking place in the streets of Birmingham and is featuring Gypsy thugs. Two different worlds, two (very) different styles. All my best, Hugo

Cricket is played by Australia, England, India, West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Bangladesh et al. Cricket is governed by laws, as in the "Laws of Cricket", not rules. It is a game of strategy, patience, athleticism, perseverance, courage, mental strength, determination, durability; the game is played in a ferociously competitive manner and make no mistake about it, is a game of poise and elegance. It has been played now for centuries and I think if one is to discuss, or rather if one is attempting to discuss the institution of cricket, one should learn something about it.
