Documentary about Dwight Gooden; The Doc. Doc came up as a 19-year old phenom who within a year became the best pitcher in baseball. Unfortunately, he had his demons and his career would derail for periods of time as his effectiveness slowly disappeared. This is his story.

Dwight, you may never read this. But as a kid growing up watching you play was magical. Even though mistakes were made, it doesn’t devalue what you accomplished. I love you doc.

In 1984 and 1985 Dwight Gooden was better than The Franchise Tom Seaver ever was. But Dwight wasn't grounded as Tom was and Dwight lost his way from the sudden success. Plus once Dwight physically matured in his 20's and his body muscled up, he was never quite the same again because he lost the flexibility in his delivery that gave his fastball that premier velocity. Add to this the well-intentioned but detrimental handling of Dwight by pitching coach Mel Stottlemeyer in the latter's attempt to preserve Dwight's arm and career by getting him to throw less pitches and to evolve from a power pitcher to more of a finesse pitcher.

I never knew how humble Doc is. I should have known it. When you have a cannon attached to your shoulder, you know your the man.

Good job. I ate slept drank baseball back then and he was my idol. I got a chance to meet him at the ‘97 ESPYS. What an honor.

Happy 59th birthday to Dwight Doc Gooden. 11 16. We will remember how we stayed home when the mound was yours. I would love a dollar for every time an announcer would say you were 19. Here we sre 40 years later Enjoy your day

I was at the parade and do recall the murmurs amongst the fans about Doc not being there. But what a few years we had back then. In my view 85 was the most exciting year of them all even though we got bumped out by the Cardinals. Of course the 86 post season was as intense as it gets!

I know it’s not the most popular content on my channel but there are lots of fans who haven’t had a chance to see them because they aren’t in the NY/SNY area.

Dwight looks great in this!.I just watched the old Doc and Darryl documentary and he looked terrible with his sunken checks..Really hope he made his final jump to sobriety. He deserves it!

The Mets have just announced that they will retire number 16 for Doc along with number 18 for Darryl Strawberry at two separate points during the 2024 season.

My favorite player until he broke my heart with drugs. That was a sobering, iconoclastic experience. Dwight could’ve been the greatest pitcher that ever played the game if he had stayed the course. It just sucks. No other way to say it.

Wow, the 80's eh . What a decade. I remember back then it seemed it was Gooden and Clemens . When I watched sportscast in the evening and he the story was that Gooden wasnt at the parade - as a 16 yr old - i knew it was a drug problem

They go on about Shea in the 70's after the Seaver trade but showing clips from thw Wilpon-zee era in the 80's - the apple in the top hat, bleacher seating in left field etc.. Clubhouse celebration footage was from winning NL East, not the Series.

The documentary gives the impression that drug use was the only reason Gooden did not have the career he seemed to be destined for. Injuries and overwork at a young age were just as important.

I was about to say the same. The Mets overworked Doc Gooden , as this KZfaq video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJddqbeppru1hJ8.html documents. Sure, no one should party to excess, but, then, Mickey Mantle hit the ball in the middle out of the park over 500 times.

Yeah okay overworked? Bullshit! Was it being overworked that made him miss the world series parade because he couldn't stop drinking and doing drugs at local bars? He could have done it all,,,but he had a problem and it wasn't being overworked!

I disagree. They worked pitchers harder in the 50s and 60s. Cocaine, and alcohol, are literal poison on the body.
