I watched British comedies on PBS while growing up in the 70s. I developed a big crush on Penelope Keith. I found her tall, beatiful and elegant and I loved the accent and attitude.

This has to be one of Margo's best moments! Classic comedy and great cast. Margo has some fabulous lines in this series, infact it could be argued she stole the show. Great comic timing. I still crack up laughing despite knowing every line verbatim.

That's what 'Mr. Bailey' says? I'll now delete my post saying that even after watching the episode hundreds of times, I still couldn't make it out. Thank you.

Penelope Keith also played the part of Amanda in Noel Cowards, ‘Private Lives’. She was utterly sensational. It was as if Noel coward had written the part of Amanda with her in mind. No one has ever come even close in my opinion. Absolutely sublime actress in every way.

Possibly the finest episode of a very fine comedy programme

I totally agree. I’ve just watched this episode again (on BBC 4 in 2021) and I remembered almost every line from seeing it as a kid. It really is their finest moment and embodies what was so wonderful about these characters.

I've always felt that Penelope Keith had the best comic timing of the cast.

Nah. She's great, but remember that 'Margo' had no sense of humor, so when she delivered, you got the full plate.

Best character of the whole series!

Indeed. I hated Tom, liked Jerry and Barbara, but loved Margo.
@jakeornot63062 жыл бұрын
@@braxxian I have read that Richard Briars hated 'Tom', too.
@StargazerNorth12 жыл бұрын
@@braxxian I found Barbara almost as bad as Tom. She’s one of those women who likes to make out she’s “one of the boys” in order to show up friends like Margot.

It makes me wonder if we'd still remember The Good Life if she hadn't been in it. It takes real skill to make such a humourless snob so watchable.

Indeed. Even though the urge to throw 'Tom' and 'Barbara' through the plate glass window increases with time.

@qantasCapt ....and it's interesting that she had voice only "scenes" in the very first episode. All other TV snob characters pale into insignificance beside Margo as far as I am concerned. The Wind-Break War is a classic episode and this scene is one of it's many, many highlights!

Amazingly the BBC often shows a version that has part of this scene cut out. It cuts from Margo saying 'kindly move my windbreak' to Mr Bailey shouting 'stop what you're doing' and also cuts out Margo putting her head around the door. So Mr Bailey gets the last word. It completely ruins the episode.

I suppose they think modern viewers will get a headache from long words like convolutions, or that there's something offensive about music societies. Wow, I just noticed your comment was 15 years ago. I hope you are well if you read this. I hope it if you don't as well.

I often wonder what the Margo’s of this world would feel about how well some tradesmen do these days and the serious money some of them bring in? They have useful skills the market needs and charge prices to match.
@Benjiesbeenbetter.3 ай бұрын
Margot wouldn't be in the least phased if a tradesman had more money than her. She'd probably see that as all the more reason for him to do as she asks. "I am the one paying for your large house, foreign holidays and that rather vulgar car you drive, so you will do as I say."
