As an ecology student I’m going to elaborate on the beaver point (because I’m an absolute nerd lol) They’re not really being ‘reintroduced’ properly because all the current projects have them fenced in so they can’t actually get into the wild. The government is very hesitant to make reintroductions (boo). But beavers are super important to our ecosystems because they will create tons of new habitats for rare species such as water voles, newts, etc. by damming up rivers which creates flooded areas. This also improves river flow and stops flooding from occurring in towns/villages further downstream. Win win. In Scotland some of the half-reintroduced beavers ‘escaped’ their fenced pens (some theories are that ecologists released them lol) and now the population has been officially recognised as wild by the Scottish government. Let’s hope the same happens in England! If you want more info check out a video I did where I visited a beaver reintroduction project :)
@oliver89283 жыл бұрын
It's a shame they haven't been more widely reintroduced (coming from a student who studies palaeoecology with a little less knowledge of conservation) as beaver ponds were once an integral part of English wetlands. Didn't know they were buffers against flooding, how does that work? Wouldn't it be a shame if someone were to accidentally let a large number escape in the south west..
@solarpunkalana3 жыл бұрын
@@oliver8928 oh for sure, are you studying in the southwest? I’m with Exeter in Cornwall, there’s a farm nearby with them. I’d love to sneak there at night one day and let them go lol Well because the beavers dam the river upstream it creates flooded wetland areas as you said, which holds a lot more water. So if it rains a lot instead of all the water gushing town into town further downstream where it can’t be absorbed and flooding, it seeps further into unsaturated soil around the dams upstream and just expands wetland. Of course the downside to this is if that land is being used as productive farmland it’s more susceptible to flooding. My uni did research that showed beavers reduce peak flow of floodwater in streams

Hey Max, I really love your content (especially Streetsmart!) but I'm really disappointed that you're not wearing a mask :( Especially as a lot of the "bad news" this year has been because of the pandemic, and the UK is currently in a second wave. Just for context, I live in Sydney, Australia, where yesterday the country reported 42 new cases. In the UK, yesterday they reported over 19,000. In a single day! The pandemic is far from over, and I know that you're not doing anything illegal, but your government's response has been to save the economy, not people's lives. I really hope in the future that if you choose to continue the series, you do it responsibly. You have quite a big platform here and it would be awesome to see you advocate for mask-wearing to keep yourself and others safe. Have a great one :)
