I think you're right. I hadn't even heard of it 'til a week ago and I binge-watched both series. Didn't know what to make of it for the first 2-3 episodes but I ended up hooked and it just got better and better. I cannot wait for the next series.

Because he was in Australia. Specifically, the (fictional?) St John's University in Sydney. As English is the language spoken in Australia, there is no reason for Chidi to be speaking anything else. Not sure why he still has an American accent though.

MattTheTubaGuy in the first episode when chidi and Eleanor meet, he explains that he’s speaking French and that “the good place” was translating their conversation so they could understand each other!
