Hello Nuwan and Prof. Somadeva, This history story about abandoning newborn infants to die(of starvation I assume) is a story and a subject you need approach carefully and should've revealed with more details about it's background and historical facts and reason behind it. For example, the Sinhala heading indicates killing of children(proactively) but the inside the story indicates it was more about abandonment of newborn infants to die of starvation. This phenomenon is a biological fact of all animals, not just human animals, and the reasons in most cases were the extreme stress on the mother, parents and/or the community due to starvation and other stressful socio-economic-political-cultural factors. Now, the addressing of this "revelation" within the Sinhala Buddhist context of the peoples who lived in Samaragamuwa region in the 19th century is something you need to be more responsible and discuss in details rather than saying few words about due to the sensitivity of the issue. In particular, you need to discuss what caused the extreme stress on those apparently Buddhist people to abandon babies to die of starvation. What role the colonial induced stress, starvation and other issues had played needs to be discussed as well as reasons unrelated to colonial invasion, economic pressures and starvation and whatnot. It is not appropriate you guys somewhat casually mention it with the pretext of the good aspects of colonial policies and law. We already know there are progressive and good aspects of western culture, law and ways of governing. However, the historical facts about Sinhala Buddhist people abandoning their babies to die of starvation and the laws enacted by the colonial British to "rectify" that issue needs to be discussed in detail with emphasis on socio-economic-political factors that caused the apparently SInhala Buddhist people to degrade themselves into that state. Also, no doubt this was not a widespread as it might have indicated in the colonial records but isolated incidents here and there, because if it had been widespread, then we need to employ our educated imagination to picture the degree of extreme stress such communities would've been experiencing to go into such extremes while abandoning the cultural values to aid the survival. Both you and Prof. Somadeva should've approached these historical incidents carefully, rather than portraying it as the progressive or good aspects of colonialism. There is much more humanely troubling facts behind Sinhala Buddhist people to degrade into that level, even if those incidents were isolated. In reality, the above "practice" of abandoning babies to die should have been addressed by you guys as a serious historical cultural degradation issue rather than any good aspects of colonial administration legal system to prevent it from happening. I did not see either one of you showing any seriousness or sensitivity or factual finesse about this historical issue. Most certainly you should not have portrayed the colonial law in relation to the infant abandonment as a progressive law. Instead you should have discussed what colonial administration did or did not do to address the socio-economic-political-cultural issue behind the abandonment of babies to die of starvation. Carelessness you both displayed in the above matter cannot be underestimated. I won't comment about the PhD thesis of Prof. Kulasekara who extracted the historical records from colonial records and his motivation behind the revelation as well as where he received the funding for "heart warming" actions of the colonial administration to pass laws to prevent such incidents from happening. All in all, if you want to bring up progressive and humane aspects of colonialism, the laws they enacted to prevent infant abandonment(to death) most likely is a very bad example. Imagine starving some ten dogs by restricting their access to food and then throwing a single piece of meat for them to "share". Now imagine when they start biting and attacking each other in order to get a piece of the meat. Then imagine beating up the dogs to separate them from seriously injuring or killing each other. That is indeed what such laws are and were about. Such simple allegory can explain about the plight of those people who ended up abandoning their new born infants to die of starvation. It is ridiculous to portray colonial administration imposing laws to punish people who let their babies die of starvation as a progressive and humane, when in reality such extreme poverty was a result of colonials destroying their way of life and stealing their resources as well as enforcing laws to steal their resources. I am not saying Sri Lankan people did not suffer from poverty and famine prior to European colonial invasions. Of course, they would have during south Indian invasions as well as a result of natural disasters. The issue here is that the portrayal of colonial laws that were imposed as a punishment for abandoning babies as progressive and humane, which in reality it was not The reality of colonialism was far from that. Colonial invasions were what they were and inevitable when we study the human nature. However, we don't need to sugarcoat it.
