As an Oilers fan, I totally agree. Vancouver wanted it more in the final 40 minutes and it showed. The guys on the power play were trying to be too cute and their passes were getting picked off so easily. It's not on Bouch, it's on everybody except Pickard. There's no reason they couldn't have won this game other than they didn't try to win, and the Canucks did.

Ekholm is the steadiest D the Oilers have. Bouchard is good offensively, but prone to gaffs and while Darnell Nurse is a physical presence, he’s wildly inconsistent at both ends. The others are borderline NHLers. The Oilers get by because they have McDavid, Draisaitl, RNH as a solid 2 way centre and a couple of wingers who can finish. The problem is that they spent so much on their top players that they didn’t have enough for a veteran goalie or any depth. Shutdown their top 2 players and it’s game, set, match. But because McDavid and Draisaitl are so good, they’re a contender.

When you come with statements like this "problem is that they spent so much on their top players that they didn’t have enough for a veteran goalie or any depth" you know you have zero knowledge of the Oilers roster. If you wait until the forecheck is in range to stick check you, when you are the lone Oiler back, then you have failed to move the puck when you needed to. It's possible that the other Oilers didn't get open fast enough to give him a good target to pass to, but if that's the case, Bouchard either needed to skate with it sooner or just get the puck out of the zone. Because the regular season doesn't really matter much when it comes to playoffs and is virtually irrelevant. We've seen teams go undefeated against another team during reg season only to lose in the playoffs against that team. Jets/aves this year, Boston/ Florida last year, Edmonton/Vegas last year (3:1). During the playoffs other than game 5. Edmonton has outshot Vancouver every game, had more puck possession every game had more offensive zone time every game. They outplayed Vancouver basically every game but that doesn't matter when you have a pylon in net. Game 5 Vancouver was dominant, but it was the only game so far where they looked like the genuine better team. I think it was game 3 were Edmonton was basically as dominant out shooting by a large margin but Skinner let in a weak goal. Even Vancouver fans were saying "we didn't deserve to win tonight" which is what Edmonton fans would have said had Edmonton won game 5. Imagine if Pickard was in net for the whole series and played as good as he did game 5. This series would likely have been over with Edmonton taking the series. I understand the counter is "well if we had Demko" and that maybe true but it would be a elite level goaltender vs a backup. Edmonton's Achilles heel is their goaltending.

So far it's been van wins1 Edmonton wins 1 van wins one Edmonton wins 1. And most the Vancouver games (game 5 excluded) Edmontons goaltender let them down with soft goals in. Oilers had More shots, more possession, more offensive zone time, thud is the tell tale signs of the more dominant team. Ask yourself this had Edmonton scored the last goal on Vancouver in game 5 making the series 3:2 Edmonton would you say they were the better team that game because they won and they got the results aka a big W despite being dominated all game long? These teams like Edmonton and Carolina and Toronto keep trying to win the Cup with big offense, limited or no physical toughness, and mid goaltending. That’s a regular season strategy, it doesn’t get you through the playoffs. Like Carolina should take half their cap space and build themselves a checking/shutdown line.

yeah goaltending is always the story on any successful team. last year it was a resurgent bobrovski, and an amazing performance by backup goalie hill in vegas. this year its ottingers consistency, shesterkin winning games, and silovs shocking rookie performance

@@jameson1239That defense works in a one-time regular season matchup, plus having the puck all the time inflates the defensive numbers. But there’s no physical presence, they’re all tactics, that gets figured out in a seven-game series. I mean you don’t have to goon it up out there but they can get shoved around. You have to be more well-rounded than that to win the Cup. I’m a Lightning fan and Carolina reminds me of the Bolts circa 2018. Great regular season team but don’t have what it takes to run the gauntlet. They needed that Coleman-Gourde-Goodrow shutdown line to make the jump and Carolina needs that too.

I've been a Bouchard critic for a long time. But this year his defensive game has improved. Within the playoffs, horrendous gaffe aside, his defensive game at times has been borderline #1 Dman tier. He needs to be more consistent for sure, but if next year his defensive stats take another step, I think he'll develop to be a bonafide #1 D who gets a $9.5M contract

If Bouchard stays around a ppg next year, he can easily get 9 million or more. With Draisaitl more than likely getting 13-14 million on his next deal and McDavid 15 million or more on his. There is a lot of money getting tied up in those 3 over the next couple years

I wouldnt even call this an off night. Bouchard has been a powerhouse offensive defenseman for us for quite a while but he's always been a defensive liability. That's why he's paired with a strong defensive player like Ekholm. Bouchard constantly gets caught looking two passes ahead and has big defensive fumbles like this all the time because of this. You can see it with how much he tries to slow down the play in our end consistently.

@toedrag-release He does it in the offensive zone on the blueline a lot too. He'll be looking for where he plans to play it before receiving it and will end up misplaying or missing the puck coming towards him. Those just aren't as punishing as the defensive zone ones. Don't get me wrong, I love what he provides offensively, but he does make these types of mistakes pretty regularly. I also don't believe he's the reason we lost that game by any means. I think we lost that game because our powerplay couldn't adjust to them changing their penalty kill style to be more aggressive.

@@karaokepanda8602 no I agree, he makes risky plays that he just doesn't have the talent to pull off. I've been saying it for years, I said it before the season started, I said it during the season and I said it before the playoffs started: Edmonton have no depth and are defensively non existent. They are PP merchants who lean on McDrai to win games for them ALL THE TIME. If either one of those guys want to win a cup they need to leave the Oilers. They got lucky with the Kings because they were gifted powerplays but now that they aren't they are faltering HARD.

Ain’t no one saying no Bouchard slander. He serves up pizzas more often than not, and no one says anything about it. Not, the players, coaches , gm. No One. He’s not the only one though, all the top guys do it as well and so do our bottom 6. I think management are too afraid to call out our top players and that is why this team will not win a cup (unless they just out score their problems, highly unlikely). It’s sad because they have the personel to make deep runs every year if they play the right way but for some reason any coach who has been brought in never addresses this. Also their physicality in the playoffs is pathetic.

For the first time in the series, the Oilers were outplayed, and not by little. In the 3rd period, Oilers had 0 real scoring chances. It was only the Nucks pushing. And all 3 goals against are avoidable. Pickard has to make the save on Soucy. The 2nd is on Bouchard, but there was plenty of sloppy defense before. The Miller goal, it`s a faceoff with less than one minute in the Vancouver zone, lost by Drai and then the Oilers kinda had it but gave it away. That win was well earned by the Nucks, they outworked the Oilers. Still, Vancouvers goals are easy to avoid. Last years Vegas team would have won that game 2:1.

I agreed, it's not all Bouchards fault that lost the game. It is the fact that Edmonton does not have a cohesive TEAM. They have sporadic generous plays, mostly from one player. Conner McDavid. If you want to win the Stanley Cup, you can't just stand around waiting for the plays to develop by one person. Everyone needs to generate plays and passes to the open teammates.

Bouchard is good at scoring and getting points on the powerplay but as a defensemen that doesn't relate well in other teams, his defensive liabilty would hurt more than his offensive skills... with a diff team, he would be lucky to get 10 goals and 40 assists instead of 82 points because he wouldn't have a Draisaitl and McDavid with him on the powerplay
