Look at how easy this looks. Harden gets the ball up top and obviously you gotta have a guy next to him. Also you gotta cover Kawhi in the corner, PG of course, and the big man down low, so the spacing is great.
Russ sets a screen for Leonard to curl down the middle, and as we let it roll, Brunson is indecisive and doesnt switch, the help is late and we got the dunk.
Again, on the high screen, Robinson has to come out because of the shooting threat from James, so you know that Harden is gonna blow by him forcing the help to step in.
And that’s exactly what happens here as the beard finds Kawhi in the corner all alone and he knocks it down.
But despite everything looking so simple and unstoppable for LA, they still lost the game.
And there were some issues that we need to point out. First, the good things.
Harden is a master in the pick and roll. He already has the chemistry with Zubac.
Early on in the game, James finds him with this sick pass between Robinson’s legs, and the Clippers get some free throws out of it.
Seeing that this works fine, moments later he goes for it again, and this time it ends with a bucket.
Harden had a solid game as he didn’t try to force anything. 17 and 6 on 66% from the field.
You see all the attention that he draws on the pick and roll, kind of making the defense fall asleep here and completely overlook Norman Powell who just slides along the three point line and is wide open for this shot which of course goes down.
James actually spent a lot of time with some of the bench guys, which to me was a surprise since I thought that the best thing for the Clippers would be to have Westbrook out with the second unit.
And this is how we get to some of the issues in that starting lineup.
At times things just looked too stagnant with Russ and Harden taking turns 1 after the other on who has the ball in his hands.
And there are possessions where Kawhi and PG, literally the 2 best shot makers and scorers for this team, are on the side just watching them dribble.
Paul George was 2 for 11 in this game and some of it was because of forced up shots looking like PG was saying- okay it’s my turn to shoot now.
There was some movement on like 2-3 plays where Westbrook set some screens, but before you even try to tell me that this looks good, just listen:
The stagnant play when either guy is off the ball has been an issue ever since their time in Houston, so I’m afraid that it’s going to be the case here as well.
These 4 guys spent just 19 minutes together, and scored just 37 points on 39 possessions. Their offensive rating of 95 points per 100 possessions would be dead last.
On defense they gave up 47 points on 39 possessions with a defensive rating that would also be dead last.
And I get it, I shouldn’t be overreacting after just 1 game, but seeing the same issues coming back to bite them is telling, and the Clippers have some work to do if they want to be a contender, instead of just relying on the big names that they’ve acquired.
I actually warned you guys about this, and predicted all the good stuff that it could open up for Philly. It’s all in this video so check it out. Talk to you in the next one. Peace out.

That’s one of the main issues and they need to trade zubac cuz he gets bullied in pick and roll come playoff time and he’s not even a factor in the last clutch minutes in the playoffs . I’ve been seeing this for years Ty lue in game line up adjustments is a huge problem and zubac as well and they can trade Norman Powell and Westbrook too . If the clippers can get Christian wood as the starting center they would be a problem for the league.

You didn’t watch the game that’s forsure. They literally were playing off the ball….. especially Kawhi and yes even Russ. They lost because 1. PG missed shots he normally makes and 2. If you think every player on that court doesn't have an oversized ego. You are extremely naive. Very few people at this level of anything don't have an ego. You don't get there by being the guy everyone walks/talks over. It's also hard to bash someone's work ethic when they are consistently top 10 for over 10 years in their position. In the world mind you, not just a home town, state, or country. You stay that consistent over 10-15 years, in a field where young kids are coming up left and right to take your job and paycheck. Average career's are around 4 years in the NBA, he's been in the league for 15. I'd say that alone covers his work ethic and consistency. Sure he hasn't won a title, but look at other teams in his era. It hasn't exactly been an easy ride with such stacked teams to play against. He's also been in the west the majority of his career, which has been the power house the last 15+ years. He's played during Laker's, Spur's, Clipper's, Golden State and Thunder's high peaks where they were all stacked and spent most of his time on the rocket's with very little star power around him. Still brought them to the playoff's every season though. The one time he went to the east was here recently in 2021 to the Net's and he got Eastern Conference Player of the year. Imagine if he just played in the East most of his Career, or was on one of the more stacked roster's. I think people would rank him much higher if that were the case.

2018-2019 this team wouldn't work. Mainly because of Harden and Russ. They both aren't good team players. Russ doesn't play winning ball either. You can't play at full speed for 48 minutes like he tries to do. It's nice to watch and support. But you will lose a lot of games with that style. And Harden has always been a me, myself, and I, type of player. If not for that he should have a ring by now with how dominant his Rockets were and the injury to KD that one year.

Yea the Clippers offensive scheme was already pretty terrible to begin with, they would just iso Kawhi and PG. They are both top notch iso scorers, but adding Harden doesn't help. Yes he gets assists but his assists are dribbling the ball for 20 seconds and then quickly kicking it to an out of rhythm shooter who has been standing still for the entire possession. Or pick n roll, but that doesn't involve the Clippers best two players, and Harden just had the best PnR partner in the league last year.... and he demanded to leave because it wasn't enough for his fragile ego.... This team will win a bunch of games just out talenting teams, but I just dont see this working in the playoffs . My bet would be this team gets blown up after an early playoff exit and nobody in the league will want to pay Harden a max

Thr Knicks hadn't won at home yet and played their asses off at both ends. If a couple more shots had landed at the beginning of the 4th the Clips wouldn't have lost heart and let the game go. Ok look, people saying this is on Harden, Westbrook, PG, and Kawhi to figure out are on one. Coach needs to step in and determine for each 24 second stint how to get guys to their spots and how James and Westbrook can find those guys and get their own shot. The volume for the 4 shouldnt be the same, Kawhi should be getting the most looks with PG and Russ second and Harden playing a pure facilitator type role on the first unit with a higher scoring emphasis on the second unit. Ty Lue needs to get dudes to stop taking turns on ISO, and shore up the defensive gap that Harden and Zubac present- anyone who watched last night knows that most of the worst defensive shows were from those 2 not being in the right spot or shying away from defense. I just saw dudes standing around so much that it was almost like "hey, lets see what everyone can do by themselves and how far that works" with no "ok, now we know where we are at, lets bring it together with some plays to get dudes in their hot spots so we can repeat the success. One of the reasons you get players in ISO situations is to get a feel for the night and see what works and where dude's are hot from, and you get them to those spots with designed plays and actions. No one is saying stop ISO scoring, but use it differently to give guys great looks off all kinds of actions.

@@BobbyP5985 nah, GS has a better bench mix with youth and experience, CP3 would be put in that 2nd unit to keep it the line up in check while Curry and/or Klay isn’t on the floor.

In my opinion its not going work us nobody on the team seems to actually like Harden the closest seems to be Pg kawhi is probably indifferent per usual The bench most likely doesn't and all you need to know how Russ feels about him is how he acted when Harden walked in the locker room and how he lit up when he saw Pj Tucker which he seems to like nore these days.

Too many ballhogs spoil a team. There'll be too much dribbling, hotdogging, hoisting difficult shots, b*tchin about calls, blaming the coach and pouting, and not much passing and everyone standing around and seeing the "stars" do their thing.

Problem is Harden and Russ won't adapt. It's frustrating cause they're great players, all time greats. But their ego will get in the way of them ever winning a ring. They NEED to adapt and adjust their game and do small non-flashy work on the court, sacrifice for the team.
