The Germans and the Jewish people of the WW2 era would beg to differ, for different reasons of course. The Germans were well educated, and yet they fell for Hitler's crap. The Jewish people were even more educated, and yet they were led to the concentration camps like sheep to the slaughter. Two totally different groups of well educated people who were fooled for different reasons.

As a Texan teacher and Christian, I share your anger and disgust. Our teachers also have to work under a Republican governor and legislature that is belligerent toward educators. Furthermore, I am also disgusted with the so called conservative right Christians. They are not real Christians. Jesus did not teach us to love just conservatives, but everyone. In addition, one of the titles Jesus was called was Rabbi, or teacher. So is Arnn and other conservatives calling Jesus “dumb”.

I recently saw a letter written to a student who took an undergrad course in the geography and climate change Dept. The letter said the student did well in the s class and that the instructor recommended to the dept that this student may be interested in other classes the dept offered. The letter listed some of the most popular classes, some being climate change and migration. The Republican who posted the letter and several others perceived this letter to be an attempt to indoctrinate college students into becoming Democrats. Conservative media/politicians have republican voters so convinced that its college which turns ppl into Dems voters instead of the truth which the additional education in many subjects, like economics, sciences, sociology/psychology, philosophy, mathematics, etc, teaches critical thinking, teaches college students how to do research, and what research r reliable sources and which aren’t that leads many college educated ppl to vote Dem vs republican lies. I responded by stating I had received a similar letter inviting me to apply for the graduate program near the end of my undergraduate program from the same dept. Republican elites think they can dumb down, lie, and con nearly half the population for the short-term gains for the GOP w/out causing irreparable damage to our country, our country’s future, are ability to compete w/other countries, damaging our reputation around the world bc half of our population doesn’t know basic facts, thinks experts and educated ppl r pushing some kind of false agenda, like Covid restrictions and Covid vaccines, many republican voters would prefer Putin to be our president over a Dem, etc. Education is what separates 1st world countries from 2nd and 3rd world countries. It’s what will determine whether we will remain the dominate superpower, world leader, and largest economy. The future jobs r going to need many Americans who have lots of STEM education. I don’t see how we can remain #1 if nearly half our population believes education is bad, false, nothing but liberal indoctrination. We certainly won’t be able to guide the large ship we r all in in the right direction to remain a great country, to address the issues which need addressing, to electing a functional government. It should be illegal for conservative media and politicians to lie to the extent that they do, to defund education to the extent they have been, and to allow Russia and China to con republican voters and, to some extent, liberal voters. Russia, China, and the anti-democratic forces in the U.S., like Trump, Greene, Bannon, Rudy, Gosart, Ron Johnson, etc, most of the far-right republican politicians have the Republican base voters supporting a dictatorship, being pro-Russian, supporting Russia over Ukraine, and wanting a dictatorship which will be under the control of Putin and Xi. They will have control of our military, get Trump or a Trump-like president to pull the US out of NATO, which would allow Russia to take control of all of Europe and Xi to take control of Asia, and they would destroy the US.

This has been the republican playbook for dismantling public education altogether, ever since Reagan took office. Back then I was a junior education major and was in the library when I came across a few random magazine articles about the topic, so I started reading what the plans were for the complete overhaul of K-12 education and how business men had come up with this for-profit charter school plan and Reagan was completely on board with it. I then began to watch what happened throughout my 28 year teaching career based on what I'd read back in college. This is why for-profit and religious charter schools have become such a big thing and why public education/special education has never been fully funded even though more and more mandates and testing have been dumped on teachers. The republicans drain the resources and all that siphoned money goes into the charter schools and the politicians tell the public the public the public schools are broken and charter schools are the answer. They also get rid of all that pesky union representation for teachers and can hire and fire at will with no teacher recourse. The government makes teachers do more for less money and in the meantime degrades them and tells the general public how the public school teachers are dumb, or 'groomers', or pedophiles, or insist children are being 'indoctrinated' by scary 'demon liberals'. The parents then go to the school boards or get elected to school boards and demand their children NOT be taught critical thinking skills or actual American history or anything that children in other westernized countries are doing successfully. There is also an authoritarian strain in the republican party who want to ban/burn books and twist facts into some Orwellian double-speak to make the citizens distrust educators. These people would like to see the complete destruction of public schools altogether. Seems to me the republicans' 40+ year plan is working just how they wanted it to.

Much like the Republican party's success in overturning Roe v. Wade, they play the long game and they have enormous resources. They are not just doing this to gain electoral advantage, though that might happen at times. Their goal is to truly destroy public education. An uneducated public is easy to manipulate. Just look at the education rates per state and you’ll see the disparities. It’s amazing to me that the US isn’t in the top 5 of most educated countries considering it’s the most wealthy and should be at the top of the list. But no. Insane zealots with Bibles have far too much say in the public square and too much sway over education. Ban religious and charter schools and have one overarching curriculum for the country or keep falling behind.

It is even worse than just the privatization of schools. It may have started there, but now we have an ideolological crisis. A well-funded and powerful segment of the United States has put players in positions of power, no longer just for profit, but for ownership of the American people. And all under the guise of patriotism. This group of elitist believes they know how the country should be run and how all Americans should think. And now they want to carbon copy these beliefs onto future generations. It is hateful rhetoric at its finest.

Lawrence W. Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each: *1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism* - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. *2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights* - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc. *3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause* - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc. *4. Supremacy of the Military* - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. *5. Rampant Sexism* - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution. *6. Controlled Mass Media* - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. *7. Obsession with National Security* - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. *8. Religion and Government are Intertwined* - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. *9. Corporate Power is Protected* - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. *10. Labor Power is Suppressed* - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. *11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts* - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked. *12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment* - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations. *13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption* - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. *14. Fraudulent Elections* - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. Do any of these sound familiar to you?

I’m Canadian. My husband is middle management, and I am medically disabled. Our son is 18, he just graduated. He is twice exceptional (gifted and learning disabled). He got into the top college of the top university in the country. He went to public school. Maybe the only way for rich kids to get into a good university is to pay for a spot, rather than earn it. Its NOT good for any society to do that. You want your best and brightest to fill universities, not the ones whose parents can pay more. We have per-child funding here. Private and religious schools get funding for each student, but only if they follow the BC curriculum. And they’re pretty strict about that. I’m not sure what the difference is, but somehow we manage to have kids graduate on a much more level playing field. Private schools with an academic focus do well at getting into university, but that is mostly due to an expectation from parents, the school culture. They don’t have a big leg up, you still have to do the work and get the grades. It’s not an extraordinary or remarkable thing for a kid from public school to get into university, it’s the norm. I don’t know why.
@doirmad
@doirmad 2 жыл бұрын
First off, is "public' school in Canada what we call "private" school in America? If so than yes children's education in "public" schools (our private schools) in America far exceed the children in "private" schools (our public schools) because they get more intensive teaching and more one-on-one teaching. Our government and union run schools are more geared to just get the kids out in the world whether they actually know anything or not. The unions make more money by keeping the students in the public schools because they get a certain amount of money per student. Charter schools take the money away from the unions.

You don’t know why, we have some of the highest rates of post-secondary education in the world 🤦🏼‍♂️😆 Seems you may be one of the few that missed out SMFH. BTW, in many provinces, school districts are completely secular, religious schools cannot get funding, NB and PEI are two examples. I was in 2nd grade in the early 90s when I had one of the last nuns as teacher and they started banning religious teachings in schools…get with the times!

@@jessehachey2732 I’m in BC. We have catholic schools, Khalsa Schools, private schools, waldorf schools, IB schools, etc etc that all get funding for kids on a per-head basis, if they follow the B/C curriculum. I worked in the school system, I’m well aware of how it works. Ontario has a lot of Catholic schools that are publicly funded. You’d think it wouldn’t work, but it does. It may well be because schools can’t make a profit, so they’re run by foundations and churches, no private entities.
@karenneill9109
@karenneill9109 2 жыл бұрын
@@doirmad our definitions are similar to the US ones. Our public schools are funded by the government. We have many alternative schools, too, such as IB schools, Waldorf, Montessori, religious schools, etc. If they follow the BC curriculum, they get a per-head funding. They can also charge a surcharge. That varies wildly- from $1000/ year to $20,000/year. If they chose not to follow the BC curriculum, they don’t get any funding. There are a few ‘prep’ schools that have a high university entrance rate, but that’s because that’s what those schools do, and lots of kids get ‘weeded’ out along the way. My point is that somehow we seem to be making alternative schools workable here. I think it may be partially due to the fact that elementary and secondary schools cannot be run for profit.

People don't realize that aspects of public schools are privatized and it is a waste of taxpayer money. Public school districts give taxpayer money to companies to provide tech, maintenance, custodial, and cafeteria services to the school FOR A PROFIT. Public schools could save tons of money if they directly provided these services at cost. The neo-liberal capitalist policies of the last 40 years have completely mismanaged education funds. Example: I worked at a public school and when a light bulb went out the teacher had to request a "maintenance ticket" to get a "technician" from a company to replace the bulb... Two weeks later the "technician" shows up in a van, comes into the classroom and simply replaces the bulb. The school is then charged over $500 for the labor and materials by the private company. This is what happens when politicians put corporate profits above social welfare.

“[On school uniforms] Don't these schools do enough damage making all these kids think alike, now they have to make them look alike too? It's not a new idea, either. I first saw it in old newsreels from the 1930s, but it was hard to understand because the narration was in German.” ― George Carlin
@kesart8378
@kesart8378 2 жыл бұрын
Real justification exists for requiring school uniforms. The quote from Mr. Carlin has not aged well, particularly in this age of branding, the tyranny of designer couture and the pressure of social media influencers. School uniforms remove the savage fashion competition that leads some kids to depression.

If you're trying to install a fascist theocracy like the GOP is, then you have to have a public indoctrination program pushing your brand of delusion and irrationality: religion IS the very definition of delusion and irrationality. It uses faith, as its basis for belief, rather than facts, logic, and rationality.

@@kesart8378 School uniforms are actually a good thing to make every kid see each other as that. A kid. The issues are that the education system failed because parents are getting involved for all the wrong reasons, dictating what can or cannot be thaught because apparently teachers who actually studied for years to do that exact job are unqualified for it according to parents. Most people stop keeping up with things once they are out of the school system, which makes them more susceptible to liars that seem to know what they are speaking about, which partly explains how the USA ended up in this situation. Some of those problems are found all over Europe too, but not to the same extent. Just my two cents, and i mean no offense.

Republicans, you do not have the faintest clue what is happening in the classroom. Students are being pushed on to the next grade without mastering content. Illiteracy is on the rise. Teachers are being assaulted and falsely accused by parents because schools cannot effectively discpline. Parents are not supporting a teacher's right to discipline in the classroom. Students are running wild, and need serious discpline which requires support. We are not indoctrinating; you all are. We are not changing History curriculum; you all are. We are not making children uncomfortable; you all are (especially the marginalized students). We are not soliciting pornography and harming kids. We want students to be able to read. You all are acting just like the Nazis when they burned books and altered curriculum for the master race. Do not open your mouth about the classroom. You all are wrecking it.

These attacks on public education, and the proliferation of charter schools, are terribly concerning to me. My father was a public school teacher, and a wonderful teacher at that! However, one of his sisters-in-law has, apparently, fallen for the right wing nonsense that, “Our kids are being ‘indoctrinated’.” I cannot help but thinking that Dad would be extremely disappointed in this American society that elected an incompetent boob of a fascist, for US President, in Donald Trump, if he were still alive today. 🤷🏻‍♀️💜👨🏻‍🏫💜🤷🏻‍♂️

Why would the profit seekers want to shut down an industry as lucrative as leftist courses and literature? Even the communist manifesto is a best seller dude...

Brought over from Europe, this is rich since every country in Europe is out pre forming the United States in every country in its schools. I am a Dutch citizen I fell in love with an American Air Men and married him 37 years ago. School was not easy for me because I have dyslexia, however I am grateful for my free education. My boys were in the DOD school system from kindergarten trough middle school. My youngest son is diagnosed with HFA and was on an IEP for his entire education. This was no problem in the DOD system were from grade to grade all his records were carried over once we came to the United States. I had to go in every year to the same school he was in to tell his teachers for that year that my son was on an IEP. just this shows me that there is no communication between teachers from one grade to the next. I was vigilant, and my boys both are very successful in the Army. My oldest got his bachelor's degree. While being in the Airborne becoming a Jumpmaster and is now a Warrant officer II. My Youngest is a Sgt he has HFA but lives independent from us and can take care of himself. Autism runs like a red herring through my mother in law's side of the family. My brother in law also has it. Sadly he will not admit it, and after being in the Air Force for 4 years could not re-enlist because he used alcohol to self medicate. And was in the Security Police, he crashed his squad car while on duty. After this he moved back in with his parents. My father in law Sadly psssed away very young at at 69 years of age. My Mother in law has recently passed away. My husband's brother is 57 and is not capable to financially take care of himself because after the Air Force, he never got another serious job. He could if he would admit he has HFA wich is a neurological disorder not a mental illness. Qualify for Disability and then at 65 roll over into the SS system. But he will not do this he has not paid enough into System to Qualify for social Security when he turns 65. All this because of ignorance and helplessness by his parents who really didn't know what to do. And a public school system that would just give him bad grades, instead of thinking there might be something wrong.
