Like its coupe counterpart, the CLE53 Cabriolet boasts a potent 3.0-liter turbocharged and electrically supercharged straight-six engine that delivers 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque (443 lb-ft for 10 seconds in over boost). An integrated starter-generator provides an additional 23 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque.
The mild hybrid powertrain drives all four wheels through AMG's Speed shift nine-speed transmission and 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. Rear-wheel steering is standard, enhancing agility and stability.
While the CLE53 Cabriolet is slightly heavier than the coupe due to additional bracing and soft-top hardware, it still offers impressive performance. Mercedes claims a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.3 seconds (4.1 seconds with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package) compared to 4.0 seconds for the coupe.
The CLE53 Cabriolet is visually similar to the CLE53 coupe, but the soft-top roof adds a touch of sophistication. The roof is sound-insulated and available in black, gray, or red. It opens and closes in just 20 seconds and can be raised or lowered at speeds up to 37 mph.
Inside, the CLE53 Cabriolet offers a luxurious and comfortable environment. Standard amenities include sport seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Optional features include heated seats, a head-up display, and an infrared-reflecting leather trim that reduces surface temperature in direct sunlight.
Compared to the coupe, the CLE53 Cabriolet's suspension has been softened to provide a smoother ride. The AMG Drive Control system allows drivers to adjust the car's performance characteristics with various drive modes.
Despite its convertible nature, the CLE53 Cabriolet retains the full suite of AMG performance technologies, including Drift mode. However, Mercedes acknowledges that this option may seem incongruous with the car's intended role as a cruiser.
Pricing has yet to be announced, but based on the previous models it replaces, it is expected to start around $85,000.
Mercedes anticipates that the CLE53 Cabriolet will be more popular than its coupe counterpart among AMG buyers, with an estimated 55% opting for the open-top version.
