Today we're talking about an article published by the Gospel Coalition that has made waves in the conservative and evangelical communities. The article in question is in fact an excerpt from Josh Butler's forthcoming book, "Beautiful Union," and argues that sex and the roles of husband and wife within the act of sex point to salvation and show the relationship between Christ and the church. We discuss the backlash from popular Christian leaders and others who have deemed the article "too erotic" and "misogynistic." Ultimately, the Gospel Coalition took the article down, caving to the criticism. We also look at the theological arguments that back Butler's claims, regardless of how he may have worded the excerpt. Then, Canadian Pastor Derek Reimer was arrested last week after he protested a family drag event (and was consequently physically thrown out). He has been charged with "mischief" and "causing a disturbance." Tucker Carlson responded to this, asking (very rightly so) where the Christian leaders are to speak out about this? Where are David French and Beth Moore? Turns out Beth Moore is busy speaking to Baylor students about white privilege. We take a look at the kind of rhetoric she is prioritizing.

I don't truly believe that it does. Add any attempt to do so is to make it itself into an idol if you ask me. There is nothing necessarily all that sacrificial about sex for a man. As long as the body can produce the seed it is not like anything it's really lost. Now the other author she talked about suggesting as a Sacrament well the Catholics treat marriage that way. I think people are confusing the Dynamics between a husband and a wife with the attitude of the church towards Christ. To distill it to this picture grossly under represents the gospel frankly

I confess that I have not fully listened to this video yet, (and just going off by what people are commenting about), but my passage of reading today was Ephesians 5. It speaks of husbands/wives and verse 30-31 specifically says, “…for we are members of His body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be United with his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” I don’t see this in a sexual way. I see this as a metaphor as becoming united; working together; the mixing of blood to become a part of the other; a deep intimacy that only two people should know each other, more than anyone else in the world. Not sexual.

I wonder what would happen if an American prayed silently outside that Birmingham abortion clinic? It would be very embarrassing for England if they arrested an American for praying silently on a public sidewalk. Allie, when the Bible says that "he went in to her," it's not talking about the details of the sex act. What it means is that he went into her tent or room. It's a polite way to signal sexual intercourse, but it doesn't mean what you think it means. And, nowhere does the Bible infer any kind of sexual union between Christ and the Church. Marriage is more than sex. It is unconditional love, fidelity, and everlasting union inherent in the relationship between Christ and His Church that is explained in Scripture. The fact that there is no sexual union in Heaven should tell us that God's view of marriage is far greater than our earthly/physical view. Further, in Romans 6:5, the word for "united" has to do with being grafted in. In contrast, the idea of eros love between Christ and the Church is most often seen within Catholic mysticism from the medieval period, and today is sometimes seen in Charismatic circles or among heretics such as Anne Voskamp.

(I’m hesitant to share that because it’s super personal of course) which is just my point. These are things that maybe don’t need to be shared with the general public… We don’t have all the answers and these thoughts and opinions shouldn’t be thrown out as “biblical”… that said,I think the TGC should have stood behind their member and not bowed down to people who are uncomfortable hearing this “out of the box but certainly not UNbiblical” thought. In other words I think he’s on to something (but I don’t think it’s going to take up a lot of my thoughts)

Sex & The Cross ??? ... Allie thank you, great Episode & thought's ... I initially thought it's weird, unfamiliar, uneasy Theology twisted into another new age way of lessoning the Gospel downwards to worldly views. And yet, stepping back from an almost Christian offended stance; it made a whole lot of sense thinking about it & exploring what others have said about it, made it so much clearer. The more we Christians think & study this 'hush-hush' way of describing & comparing a blissful sacrificial union between a husband and wife & Christ and His Church, the more we realize this is actually so beautiful in so many way's how God for one made us part of the creation process & for another the depth of Christ's love through his sacrificial death. God as we know views marriage, divorce, adultery and all sexual nature and sinning therefrom in a very serious light & the way satan cheapened the holy communion between husband & wife, with common sexual worldly human acts aims to detract & distract from that. Josh Butler is but one whom is speaking openly about this subject & It's beyond me why TGC would act this way? The true depth there exist in the giving & receiving of each other in marriage & why exactly it is valued so highly by God that it must only occur in a dedicated, loving, all-encompassing forever lasting relationship one actually will die for IS i.e What Christ did for us! Ephesians 5:24-25 +32 [24] Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. [25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; [32] This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. See here some great articles on this subject: # John Piper ... www.desiringgod.org/interviews/why-sexual-metaphors-of-jesus-and-his-bride-embarrass-us Exerpt ... " Marriage - including sexual intimacy - portrays Jesus’s relationship with the church". # www.todayschristianwoman.com/articles/2008/september/5.34.html?paging=off Spiritually meaningful sex .... How Sex Points Us to God - Believe it or not, making love with your spouse is a spiritual-as well as a physical-exercise.... By Gary Thomas .... Exerpt ... " To appreciate how sex points us to God, it may help to understand how the ancient Jews viewed sex. The Holy Letter (written by Nahmanides in the thirteenth century) sees sex as a mystical experience of meeting with God: "Through the act [of intercourse] they become partners with God in the act of creation. This is the mystery of what the sages said, 'When a man unites with his wife in holiness, the Shekinah is between them in the mystery of man and woman.'" The breadth of this statement is sobering when you consider that this shekinah glory is the same presence Moses experienced when God met with him face-to-face (Exodus 24:15-18)".

It's a part of being made in the image of God. All creation declares God's glory. We bear his image. Genesis 1 describes us being created in the image of God male and female. That means that our physical existence is a visible picture of what the invisible God is like. There is profound meaning in the way God created us. Sex is a picture of salvation. It is also a picture of the unity in the Trinity.

Is it creepy, gross, and weird to think that God intentionally created the act of sex to reflect the gospel? He writes spiritual truths into physics realities all the time. Daily bread, living water, the covenant between a husband and wife, and also, very specifically, the mystery of the two becoming one which Paul says literally is the metaphor for God and his people, and then how it also creates more life. Maybe you don’t love the words he chose because it makes you blush, but God was the one who designed it that way. I mean, I read the article and I get where the feminists are coming from. I am not a feminist, but the article did focus on male pleasure and ignored female pleasure, which is obviously ignoring half the part of *good* sex. Women playing a passive role in sex is not God's design, it's for them too - they have a pleasure center too, and it often gets ignored. Also, Jonathan Pokluda said something pretty objectifying and gross a month or two ago about a woman (not his wife). I like him, but that wasn't OK. Again, I am a complementarian but I am not blind to the idea that they do have a point here.

From the Bible I would argue that there is only one human race, but there are various ethnicities, ethnicities that actually come from the same human parents and ethnicities that are biologically mixed together to one degree or another. So, there is one race, the human race. I think a better term "ethnically bigotted". However, I do disagree that all people share this same problem. Some do, definitely. Many might in some circumstances. However, I don't believe that the sin of ethnic bigotry is a sin we all share. There are a variety of sins in the world, and we are all sins. The sins we share are sins like unbelief and pride, etc., but in regard to other particular sins, not all people will share the same sins. Not everyone is a homosexual, for example. Not everyone is racist. Some are, many may be, but all. I do agree we should treat people as individuals based upon their character.

Both the Orthodox and Catholics claim Marriage is a Sacrament. 4th the points the Author made sounded fine to my Catholic ears, even though they sounded like puns (high-educational, esoteric, sex puns), but not like outright heresy. It's not graphic, but I think it's a stretch to turn sex into theology. It's blessed by God. It's a special part of marriage, but not sure it's a representation of the union between Christ and his bride. It's also indicative of the Left to see everything in racial or patriarchal terms. They also stretch normal conversation into weird shapes to fit their broken view of the world.
@carolberubee

Agreed. The Church and Christ is likened to marriage, but not in a sexual way. Ephesians 5 says the likeness between Adam and Eve, and Christ and the Church is "bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh," not sexual union. Eve was taken from Adam's side; that's the comparison.

I do think somehow some way sex is theological because it's a gift from God, created and mandated by God within to correct union, and repercussions from not conducting it according to scripture has a greater impact on the soul/being than most other sins... I think the natural act of sex leans into/supports the level of intimacy and represents the type of vulnerability and trust we should have in Christ... I think it only represents union in christ being that you don't have unions with everyone else the same way you do with christ... except you commit this act with your wife in a marriage, the marriage being the ultimate representation of Father God, Son of God, and Holy Spirit. Random thought that could counter my whole summary is that Christ was not brought into the world through sex... or was he? IDK but it was a random thought

There also is the issue of people who have been sexually abused,rp I know for me with Cptsd severely abused that way from a wee child up it was very triggering. I read alot from other survivors sexually abused in the church as well that was really triggered by it . I'm not saying if the article is right or wrong I'm seeing it through different lens than someone who hasn't been tortured sexually. Probably a trigger warning is a good idea for those who been traumatized. Some abusers use scripture even to abuse and call it Holy and so on . People who are not traumatized can no doubt read it with a view that you can see it . I just wanted to share that because I'm part of groups that are trauma survivors so I them are seeing things differently which obviously makes sense. Just wanted to share a different perspective for some of us on this healing journey.. I again want to clarify I'm not saying what you are saying is wrong but you can see it either through healing or not been through such horrendous things ❤. Example I have 16 of those abusers growing up plus much more trauma on top . So emotional and physical and visual flashbacks are a real thing . Thankfully God is gentle understanding and has compassion for me walking through this and it's a miracle I'm alive. I definitely suffered spiritual abuse all with it all . Not a fan of TGC in the least, but an article wanting to show the spiritual side of sex is good. I see sex as a symbol of the Gospel. First of all, does Creation not declare the glory of God. The Word of God is seen as a seed; so is sperm. James talks about the "implanted Word," and implantation happen days after sperm and egg meet. The result is new life, "the fruit of the womb." We are to bear spiritual fruit. Makes perfect sense to me. Sex is holy; it was created to glorify God. We would do well to see sex as a form of worship. Nothing perverted about sex itself. Satan perverts it by tempting people to engage in it outside of heterosexual marriage.

KJV is a great translation, but didn’t even have the oldest most reliable manuscripts available to it. The Greek Septuagint (on which the KJV is translated) has proven to not necessarily be the most accurate as it appears to have passages added much later than older Hebrew manuscripts. Old and New Testament Christian Biblical scholars are for the majority in agreement with this. KJV was the best of it’s kind for its time, but after earlier manuscripts (and most particularly the dead sea scrolls) were found, there have been more reliable literal translations made. That’s just the truth of it.

I’m actually really disappointed that people can’t see the beauty in sex within a marriage and be able to relate it to the relationship Christ has with His church. I think the issue is stemming from the fact that people have taken culture’s definition of sex with a feminist twist and are all up in arms about a man pointing to the beauty of sexual union. It was never about culture’s definition. It will always be about God’s definition. And people need healing in order to see the beauty of what this author has written.

Patriarchy is a good thing. Jesus models that for us, along with complimentarianism. The husband/wife picturing Jesus/church is so true. Headship and different roles are modeled here. Saying there's no difference in roles for the husband/wife is saying that the church has the same role as Jesus. This is elevating man to God, the essence of the fall and sinful! But we are made in the image of God and have equal worth because of this, which will be fully realized in the age to come when we have our glorified bodies and are rid of our sinful nature. Yes, the patriarchy can have issues because of our fallen state. But that is because of sins of man, not an issue with patriarchy itself. God is our Patriarch. We submit to him. That is a good thing.

But I just started giggling when I saw it was just a much cruder, less articulate version of Catholic theology around sex. It was interesting to me that so many women were reading into it the idea that women shouldn't enjoy sex. Because I saw nothing that suggested that, only that sex that is solely focused on pleasure to the intentional exclusion of procreation is small and selfish. And he's right. Pope John Paul II was very specific that a husband ought to care about the comfort and pleasure of his wife during sex, btw, so nothing about procreative oriented sex *has* to mean the wife has a bad time. Children deserve to be conceived, birthed, and raised in love, and Catholic sexual theology is very cognizant of this.
