personally i'd appreciate sticking to the older cases just because modern murder cases are so publicized it's easy to get information on them. the majority of your videos bring cases to light that i'd never heard of before, and i like that about them

My mom heart broke when she said she wished she could tell her mama. As her mama, I would have gone out to the lake and talked to her spirit. Things like this is why I always told my kids, they can talk to me about anything. Even if they think or know I might get mad or sad. I want to know so we can get through whatever together. That they'll always be my babies and I am their safe place, no matter what the world throws at them. My daughter says that's what made it easier to come out when she did. I was the first one she came to about it and I was the one who helped her tell the family. We are each others support system. My heart breaks for Ms. Grace. Wish I could hug her.

Oddy, I found the information on the second boat incident a month later. It was a lady by the name of Katherine Stryker and she drowned and then her boyfriend committed suicide. New York Daily Tribune, June 26, 1906. They believe her death to be accidental. I have the article if you'd like. I wish I could attach it in the comments.

Actually spent summers as a teen at Big Moose Lake AND in the building once known as THE GLENMORE. My uncle and older cousin had purchased the old hotel in the late 60's. Only the basement, main floor and part of 2nd floor were stable. The place was enormous. Unc and cuz made separate summer units on 1st level and basement respectively. There was a huge, ornate ballroom/dining room on main, where me and my large family would stay. Remember exploring upper floors( creepy for sure, strange noises often) and even found an old ledger dated 1911 signed by vacationers from across U.S. and Europe. Also some photographs! The hotels' history details it as one of the Adirondacks classiest summer resorts of that era. Neither owns the property now. Only heard about the Brown/Gillette case recently, so I've been delving deeper into the story. Thanks for the intriguing tale, and images of the hotel. Memories plenty!

I come from Canberra in Australia. There is a lake called LAKE GEORGE on the outskirts of the city, which is in a basin and is an unusual geographical site; the lake can be empty for many years and then suddenly fill in a few hours to an enormous depth. In the 1950's, 5 officer cadets from the Military academy drowned in the lake on a rowing excursion ( which seems impossible for a still water lake ... and very fit young men) - then several months later exactly the same number of people drowned in another freak boating incident. Its always been a curious and spooky thing. perhaps your listeners would enjoy an episode on this? it is truly weird.

As a history buff, I noticed a trend of romanticism of the past. We forget about the horrifying and sad murders and crimes of the past. I love your historical content, its literally the only reason I subscribed. The modern cases are a dime a dozen.

I just found this channel yesterday. I like that you create videos of the old cases. They are in my opinion, harder to research or find for that matter, so this is unique. So many channels focus on the 70s-present day crimes. Keep up the work this channel deserves more viewers.

As always you have mesmerized me with another narrated story. Such a tragic tale. I do appreciate the way prisoners were dealt with in those days. Now murder is 25 to life whatever that means. It was such a scandal to be an unwed mother in those days. Now it's like a way of life. Thank you again Oddie, you always make my night!

The movie "A Place in the Sun" did paint Gillette's character in a more sympathetic light. Brown's character was portrayed as a whiny annoyance. She was seen as nothing more than a stumbling block for Clift's character to overcome in order to attain his true love, Elizabeth Taylor. It is good to see the story told in the proper light, even though I still like the movie too.

I vote whole heartedly for ZERO modern cases. It would completely spoil what's special about your channel, IMO.

I prefer the historical cases / stories. However, the problem is for the modern day viewer to get the full flavor of the historical era, the back story is as important as the main story. But, your voice is so enticingly charming you could read the list of ingredients off of a soup can and I would listen intently! Your chops! Wow!

I just started watching your videos today. I must say I am very intrigued to these historic stories. I’m so drawn to them because I’ve had so many dreams where I see myself in a dress from the early 1900s. It brings back the dream memories and I visualize other things as well. The story in the paper is about Katherine Stryker and I believe his name was Albert. He did not handle her rejection well. Hope this helps with another tale

I'm tired of the late 20th century tv docs about crime. The older the crime the better.

I saw this case covered by a different channel and started watching. It had been okay, but then I saw it had been covered by Oddy, I switched over and it was night and day. Oddy, your voice is so satisfying to listen to. And your presentation is always top notch.

Have watch two in row of heartless men taking advantage of women and leaving them destitute, and then heartlessly killing them and again I say they got what they deserved, including the public humiliation, which like you, I did not know was allowed. What is the mind set of the era that the well to do can believe that they can trifle with a persons love and not pay the price. And why is murder always the answer it seems. Things that make you say Hmmm! And I always like the blah blah at the end almost as much as the feature. Another well done !!

I don’t know if you are on Facebook or not, if you are go to Friends of Historic Herkimer County. Apparently Chester’s lightbulb wasn’t the brightest. About the pictures on his cell walls: “During his time in jail, Chester covered his walls with over 100 photos clipped from magazines-mostly actresses and woodland scenes.” Very good story, I enjoyed it immensely.

I live in a county near Herkimer County, which is near the area of, Big Moose Lake. This certainly was quite a shock to so many! They have a plaque at Big Moose Lake, where it shows the area of her' resting place near the valley she loved. She was from South Otselic in Chenango County. Another Plaque is placed near the Glenmore Hotel that gives the date they left in the boat and at the end, date of his execution. Cannot ever say how much I enjoy each one of the video's and look forward to them all. So much history in each one, and items we probably never would know about if you had not found them and took time to tell them here. Your voice is perfect for narrating. Love the way it is written as well as we can listen to the stories. Just making it so interesting! Thank you!

I enjoy many TV series and documentaries, however this really is something different - "a breath of fresh air" I guess you could put it. Oh sugar, i am sure there are FAR more of these stories than one would imagine. In 1991, i was 15 years old, and suffering from absent daddy syndrome, fell in love with a handsome 19 year old cad that gave my parents the worst bad vibe. I was forbidden to see him, given every warning out there, and yet, still fell prey to this handsome charming creature. Igot pregnant either the first or second time we were intimate- and knowing my parents would be beyond irate, hid it for four months until it could not be hidden any longer. My mother suspected well before this, due to terrible morning sickness, but i assured her it was food poisoning or an allergy. When i broke it to daddy, he wanted him prosecuted(well, he would have preferred the death penalty) and i was seriously shocked by his venom and anger. The cads family hid me until one month before my 16th birthday, and because my beloved maternal irish grandmother would not look or talk to me, we applied for the marriage license with my mom signing the forms. I turned 16 on 9/22/91, and with the 30 day waiting period got married 10/22/91 at the justice of the peace. Luckily, i was the oldest of 9 and was fairly well versed in infant and baby care in the technical terms, but it totally derailed my academic and college plans. My parents were devastated because i was an extremely good student, straight A's, all advanced prep classes, but was so sick from the pregnancy i had to drop out. Idid go back eventually, and my now 26 yr old son is one of the greatest joys of my life. I was warned and labeled hi risk due to my young age that i would likely have a preterm or small baby- when he was 9# and 22" long and the labor took three days there was unfortunately damage to my parts which resulted in infertility problems that continued.....the "CAD" divorced me adn abandoned our son (only paying the minimum in required support, and frequently blowing our son off for whatever new chickie he fancied. He actually left me for an a18 year old when i was a few months short of my 21st birthday- which broke my heart and i cried for 11 months straight. His family was wonderful to me and our son, and my ex fell completely out of favor with his family when he filed for divorce. Luckily, i did remarry years later and had another baby 10 years and 16 days after the birth of my son! While that marriage was not great either- all i can say is that i am glad i did not live in a time when i would have been an outcast---i got a taste when my beloved grandma told me i had shamed our family and unless i got married she could not bear the sight of me. Thank God she was good to her word, and sent me a lovely wedding gift adn called me every day after i was married to check in on me and the pregnancy! I think i will look up my sons father and send him a link to this video just for giggles, as i am well over the heartache now and just filled with pity and disgust for someone who could break every promise to not only me, but our beautiful little boy whom i adored so much he was the main focus of my life until his sister came and we both fell in love with her! This story just broke my heart, because I felt such empathy for Grace- the lovely trusting girl who only wanted love, and was not worldly or savvy enough to see that ass for what he really was. Ifeel the public jeering and such was not so shocking and bad, and if you think about it, it speaks to a more honorable and simpler time when a mans word was his bond- and to take advantage of Grace and to dispose of her like trash had to be beyond the pale to the people in those times. Bully for them to use my grandpa's favorite phrase! When she relaized for the brief moment he was planning on discarding her and their baby, that she was nothing to him, and had fallen for all of his lies, oh the pain and anguish she must have felt. I only hope her death was quick and the angels took her and the baby quickly away to heaven! Idont believe God would ever condemn anyone who sinned out of love and being naive- Sad sad story!But i was sooo happy to see a new one from you today! You are soo much cooler than hitchcock! I Googled the name above the woman's photo (Miss Kathrine Stryker) on the newspaper clipping and found a news article. Asbury Park Press. It states, "Bodies of Albert Test and Catherine Stryker Taken From Shrewsbury River at Keyport." I have to sign up for a free trial to get more info. Looks like it's a different case than Grace Brown. Sorry if someone else told you already, I didn't read all 1282 comments. lol

I know I'm about 3 years too late, but I finally found Obsolete Oddity; & I'm glad I did. I love your historical crimes. Some I am very familiar with, such as this one & Evelyn Nesbit & the Dyatlov Pass. Some I am not & I love to learn about them. Personally I'd prefer any crime story pre-1960. As this is 3 years old now, I sincerely hope you are still making these stories to educate us. Please, keep up the great work.

Hate to be a party-pooper but it’s not the same story. If you look closely at the newspaper it mentions the murderer’s name as Albert Trent and he was working at a butchers shop in Keyport. He didn’t have much money. The victims name was Katherine.
