This is the Grand Carousel at King's Island. It's a 1927 PTC Carousel model number 79. It was originally built at the Coney Island Park in Cincinnatti, OH and was moved in 1971 when King's Island opened and has been opperating here ever since. It is a unique carousel in that it has three signature horses that bear the PTC Shield. It has it's original Wurlitzer Band Organ Stlye 157 but it wasn't working at the time and hasn't been for some time according to some ride opps.

I had the great pleasure of keeping that band organ up and running 20 years ago when I worked there as a rides electrician, I was the only one that was "WILLING" to work on it!! the wurlitzer band organ is truly a "mechanical marvel" operating by vacuum(not compressed air) and utilizing player/piano technology there are two units that "read "the scrolls". when one unit is in operation, the other unit has rewound and is ready to play when the other unit gets to the end of its scroll. if the unit was out of service, it is very possible that parts replacement was needed. after all you are dealing with aging equipment , and getting parts from a company that does not exist any more can be a real trick, not to mention finding someone that has the knowledge to work on it, is another real trick!!!

@anglerfly I believe PTC built all their carousels completely in house. The Patrina Williams Carousel is still completely intact and still opperating at Six Flags Great Adventure. That carousel also predates PTC by atleast 15 years.

I do too, I started to go their when it opened in 1972, and later in 1999 to 2001 I worked there as a rides electrician. one of my jobs was to keep the band organ up and running !!!.

@@Fektthiswe never really knew what mr brady was designing, I think it was a bunch of nothing. the office shoot was done in the international restaurant. if you are inside the park, it was the meeting room on the right side.

Merry go rounds and the music is my all time favorite.it takes me back to when i was younger and my grandma and i rode them every year at the fair

For the benefit and information of you and others who view this, the first tune you hear is a march entitled "Under the Double Eagle" by the Austrian composer, Josef Franz Wagner and the second one, which begins at the 2:32 mark is "The Sidewalks of New York" and I have the lyrics for that one. They are below if you want to read them while listening or sing along. Down in front of Casey's old brown wooden stoop, on a Summer's evening, we formed a merry group. Boys and girls together, we would sing and waltz, while Tony played the organ on the sidewalks of New York. East side, west side, all around the town, the tots sang "ring-a-rosie, London bridge is falling down." Boys and girls together, me and Mamie O'Rourke tripped the light fantastic on the sidewalks of New York.

That grand carousel like many others I have ridden actually have a real instrument! A real pipe organ and xylophone and physical drums and cymbals that play them selves! I found that really neat! How it’s not speakers piping the songs in!

at one time , the" PTC" shield was on every horse!!!. a lot of damage was done when the horses took a trip down the ohio river, during the 1937 flood!!!. the reason why I know that , my father was related the "Schott" family that owned "CONEY ISLAND" at the time( they latter sold it to taft broadcasting co.in the late 1960s)

@anglerfly Unfortunately, the WurliTzer 157 wasn't working and they wer playing recorded band organ music on the PA. I just usd a recording of a WurliTzer 153 I had on CD. It's a real sham that Cedar Fair, the parent company of KI won't front the money to gt the organ fixed.

Thanks, they still need to do some wor on the carousel building as you can see in the photos and it would be nice if they can fix up the Wurlitzer Band Organ as it would add a unique sound to the area.

when I worked on it 20 years ago, I had that band organ sounding really good(and in tune) !!!. I was a rides electrician from 1999 to 2001. no one wanted to work on it, I was the only one "WILLING" to work on it. from the back with the doors open on it, that band organ would just about blow your ear drums out(it was loud)!!!

this is true!!!, in the comments they did say that the band organ was "OUT OF SERVICE" at the time of their visit!!!.

@@gregoryclemen1870 Cedar Fair have been for a long time one to NOT fix up their band organs or tune them or something.

@@CBF1 , it is harder to find someone that knows how to work on band organs, and I am sure that there is no one in the park that knows how to work on it, so they would have to contract it out, when I worked there I was the only one that could work on it. that was 20 years ago.
