I think it's more that James appreciates old things as stepping stones to the present day, where Richard and Jeremy like old things largely just because they like them.

He’s aged into his tastes. He was an old man when he was younger. Now he is an old man who is an old man so it suits him perfectly.

They may play up their hate for each other at times, but the fact that the three of them have stuck together all this time, even to the point of all three leaving Top Gear together, shows that they're pretty good friends. Either that, or they all have stockholm syndrome from being forced around each other for so long.

However, James does try some really halfwitted, not really thought through, contraptions, e.g. his mobile refueling rig. 🤦‍♂️ He tries stuff that should not have progressed past the "Let's try this." stage. There was the Top Gear episode where James hit his head on a rock (suffered a concussion), Richard’s horrific jet vehicle accident (he had to re-learn speech/walking, etc., and Jezza’s severe case of pneumonia. They care about each other very much.

There's also the Grand Tour beach buggy episode where Richard disappeared over a sand dune and Jeremy genuinely thought he was a gonna.... You could hear his releaf when he realised Richard was ok, he genuinely sunk to his knees.

They also did during the caravan challenge. They both slept in sleeping bags on a large mattress and Hammond was distressed by James saying the sound of the train outside was “romantic”. Perhaps the experiences were so traumatic James forgot about them.

In theory, Jeremy would have the best bet for getting away with it, but like Hammond said, with how Jeremy is he probably wouldn't even try to hide it and would do it on live television or something. As such, I think James would be the most likely to get away with it, assuming he had the time to either properly plan it or properly dispose of everything before the police got involved.

It's hard to remember everything they have done in the last 30 years. So it's likely he forgot.

Perhaps they didn't actually spend the night in the caravan in reality. Perhaps they would just film them in there as if they were sharing beds, but then, they would be off to a comfy hotel for the night, and back to the caravan for the shoot next morning.
