On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Also the control surfaces and flight computer of this aircraft is very reactive. A lot of people involved with the ATF program felt the YF-23 was the better aircraft and that the YF-22 was picked to punish Northrop over the B2 cost. They also said the YF-23 was almost as maneuverable as the YF-22 because of those huge angled stabilizers it had!

The day the US finds out that an Aircraft like the YF-23 is in someone elses hands and they confirm it is the day that heads will roll and people will shit their pants. The stealth tech used in that thing is a state secret so unless they got stealth composites from somewhere else a lot of people are gonna have a lot of questions. The YF-23's all-moving tail planes are either equal to, or slightly larger than, *the entire wing surface area of the A4 Skyhawk*. In the Peninnsular Seniors designer talk (video), this means that the tail planes of the YF-23 have something like 2.5x-3x the surface area of the F-22's horizontal stabilators (with the F-22/s rudders only having a rear fin move, not the entire surface). The YF-23 fuselage also generates considerably more lift than the F-22's. So, I am not certain that the F-22 is "more maneuverable" in any categorical sense, other than in a very specific (and narrow) set of flight regimes. Pessimistically, the YF-23 is going to have nose authority that exceeds both the F-35 (all variants) and the Rhino by a healthy margin. Also, exceeding the new F-15EX. I am not convinced that this ability is reflected in the current DCS flight model (potent though it certainly is).

Reports regarding the two ATF competitors say that the Black widow was indeed less maneuverable than the Raptor, but 'only slightly less'. That is an insanely impressive feat when your competitor is the F22 and you're beating it out in stealth
@theskyrack6433

Considering the main reason the air force chose the f22 over the yf23 is because of maneuverability id say its more then a little. I think the raptor can win the one and two circle consistently and im sure they tested it extensively. But thats just hypothetical from me nobody actually knows. All we know is the f22 won because of agility
@sigmundwong2489

@@theskyrack6433 was that the main reason? Story I heard was that they wanted to keep LH afloat, and they were skeptical Northrop could set up the production line as effectively as LH. It's not obvious that maneuverability was the deciding factor (from what I've seen/read).

@@theskyrack6433 IIRC, the 22 did a manuver demo to show off when it wasn't called for and the 23 just did the requested testing and didn't "show off". Not that it couldn't its that they didn't. While the YF-23 DOES look great...the testing showed promise but a LOT of issues that would have needed to be sorted out before it could be put into production. Have read that the inlet ducting would have needed a complete overhaul, the canopies cracked at speed and the weapons bay was not fitted for weapons and had serious issues that also would have likely needed extensive modifications. The YF-22 had a functional weapons bay that had actually successfully fired a missile, and much more conventional construction which didn't need major redesign for production. We always seem to have a fascination with the 'loser' and....considering the lack of trust the government instills in us with their shenanigans....attribute the choice to corruption rather than sound decision making. But please believe that the better aircraft WAS chosen...as well as the better engine and both have served well for 30 years now. That alone should prove the wisdom of the choices made back then.

What I find interesting is although the YF23 was bigger, those twin YF120 engines gave the YF23 a reported thrust to weight of 1.36! Those twin V-tails were especially powerful in high AOA too, also gave the F23 the same trimmed aoa of 60 degrees lile the F22 (bear in mind this is not confirmed info). Absolutely amazing what kind of technology US had in the 1990's, imagine what's being developed behind doors now.

You could design the F23 to thrust vector each engine in the upward direction (vertical with respect to the fuselage), but not the downward direction. So maybe not quite as good as the F22 in terms of total vector range, but still an improvement, especially if the upwards vector can be a higher angle than what the F22 can do in either direction.

At the time of the ATF competition with the YF-22, the appearance of the YF-23 was considered to be a negative by most observers. It was just too different from the other aircraft of the time, to the extent that there was even speculation to the effect that a critical element of why the YF-22 was selected was because in appearance and other aspects it was more familiar to the evaluators, making them more comfortable in choosing the YF-22.

In flight the yf23 is absolutely gorgeous, sitting on the ground it looks a bit goofy with the engine humps. I believe there were plans to sleek it up further, I’d loved to see what it would’ve evolved into.

The 23 was the superior aircraft, Lockheed and Boeing knew this, so they complained to the brass to win the contract since Northrop already had the B2 and McDonnel Douglas was not doing well financially. The 22 is fine and all, but the 23 is just spectacular.

Just look at all that wing area. I could see the design "revisited" with the same wing planform, but larger LEXs, and more of a lifting body (wider) fuselage. I could see the design being called the "F-46 Tiger Ray". A call back to the F-5 Tiger II, and the fact that it would look like a Stingray!!!

"Not as maneuverable" as the F-22, but the YF23 is no slouch. Those diamond shaped wings... they just give it such a UFO-like appearance. Almost reminds me of the little alien fighters from the cinematic masterpiece 'Independence Day' featuring the legendary Jeff Goldblum.

Awesome Video! I agree about the 23, absolutely stunning looking aircraft, and the 23 may fly yet with Japan....Then our 22's and Japan's 23's could cooperate in any future hostilities near Taiwan. I think we would dominate of course, but the Chinese do have numbers....plus their airfields would be closer as well...….Hopefully will never actually come to pass, but I think we would win if it did happen. Your videos for the last 6 months have been literal FIRE. Love nothing more than getting off work, eating dinner and then watching your vid for the day. Awesome Job. Only complaint is I wish your vids were a bit longer. Awesome Job as always. :)

If you look at some of the artist renders for the UK Tempest program that Japan signed up to [because US politicians!] it's interesting how many design cues have been taken from the YF-22/23 even 30 years later. The Widow is a 1990's design and obsolete for the 2030-40's so we'll never see it's like in production, but Northrop really knocked it out of the park with that design.

Honestly.. GS NAILED it with what he said at 7:00. Seeing that the only "real" competition to the F22(195 made) is the SU-57s in the world(11ish made) can you IMAGINE if they'd funded BOTH. We'd have the nearly invisible dogfighting champ in 100ish F22s so invisible it can dodge missile tracks simply by turning, and the F23 so stealthy(and still so dogfight capable) that even the F22 can't lock it outside 20mi(pretty sure GS hasn't locked one longer than that, definitely hasn't without AWACS) and even if it merges basically any Flanker could/would still be on the defensive.
