I saw a video in which a former special forces operator suggested filling a container in a stream with the mouth of the container facing downstream. That reduces the initial uptake of sediment, prior to pre-filtering which is crucial.

You are spot on. Also covering the mouth of the container with a bandana is a big bonus too

Some tips. Add a fine film of food grade silicone paste to the main O-ring. That alone made mine 10x easier to press which is one of the complaints with the Grayl. They sell food grade silicone in tiny tubes that will last years. For situations where you can't apply full body weight from above try leaning back and pressing it into your chest with both hands. I don't get leaks once the main O-ring is initially seated into the outer cup.

Thanks to your advice will try a replacement filter but mine locked up within 20 - 30 litres in a body of water frequently camp on, a lake in back country of Canada and later read instructions and Grayl does not advise using in tannin stained water which is most of the Northern Boreal here. My other filters work well over a good number of trips before losing filtration ability.

I keep a small bottle of water with dissolved ALUM in it and mix 2 tablespoons in a 5gallon bucket of water and all the particulates sink to the bottom leaving me clean water to filter off the top…Alum is used by your municipalities water treatment plants to remove solids and particulates 👍

I would add another step between these two - a hollow membrane. It's relatively cheap, light and compact and will reduce load on GRAYL carbon filter significantly. Any half decent water filter has minimum of 3 step filtration and this is what should be done if you want most lifespan and effectiveness out of your filtration system.

Agreed. I think people should draw the distinction between water on the move and stationary water. Things like having time to boil when you set up camp or a big filter at a Bug out location. The grayl sits perfectly in the water on the moves section

Getting sick of dirty water is defin. an issue and replacing the filter is the best solution. Do you think that flushing the Grayl with diluted H2O2 after use and back at home, just to get rid of residual bacteria an prototozoe could be effektive? Do you additionally boil filtered water out of a used Grayl? Would be nice to hear from you, thanks.

A great question, and I ain't a spokesperson for grayl. I live in sweden, and the temps get pretty vicious. But I have a thick wool cozy for my one. In the viciously colder months (-30c) just strain and boil.

@inforestsandlands
@inforestsandlands Жыл бұрын
@@seankelleher4222 yes but its ability for microplastics, heavy metals and blood born pathogens etc. is what does it for me. I dont agree there is one filter to rule them all. @seankelleher4222
@seankelleher4222 Жыл бұрын
@@inforestsandlands it does depend on what the risks are. 3 log removal of cysts and protozoa is inadequate in any source where they are a significant risk. And the amount of things like heavy metal that the Grayl will actually deal with is very uncertain. It’s main advantage is where viruses are a risk - but they can be dealt with by temperature pasturisation. It’s biggest problem though is that there is no genuine way of knowing when that cartridge has run out of umph.

Why is it not possible to back flush the Grayl filter? Is it just for the sake of replacement filter sales, or it actually impractical to do so? I’ve seen a video of someone using a jar inside their inner Grayl bottle to back flush their filter, but I don’t know how much it extends the useful life of it.
@dananorth895

If your filter has the anti backflow silicon insert in it, it should be possible to remove it. Then fill clean cup with clean water while inserted and withdraw out from cup. Might take a few draws, but should backflush grayl if at all possible. Haven't tried it yet. Simple enough principle. The one point however is I normally replace my carbon filters every 9-12 mths. with average use. Irregardless of ceramic filter conditions. Am a zon just had geofilters on sale $23.00 so I picked up couple. I use Millbank bags and have a dozen various sawyer type/form filters which I add bag/tubing/refillable charcoal-filter canister to. The Grayl is good for instant right now water supply. The bag system is a good camp/long term supply system where you have time to set up and treat water supply in volume.

@sheabainter8562

The filter can be rinsed well had set out to dry in a warm place for 3-4 days for long term storage between uses. Always chech visually and smell rest for mold/mildew growth. Thats why a warm area with air flow is best, avoid cold, stagnent air and high humidity when drying.

Let it dry out. Thoroughly dry cartridge by performing 1-2 'dry presses' (pressing without any water in the bottle) and empty excess water. Remove cartridge and allow it to air dry completely (depending on humidity it can take 2 - 4 days). Hand wash all other parts with warm, soapy water. Reassemble Grayl filter to create air tight seal for storage. Cartridges can last up to 3 years after opening if cared for properly between uses.

Backflushing a Grayl may or may not be a great idea. It’s not designed for it. And even if it does unclog it a bit without damage it isn’t doing anything to restore the active carbon so may just be giving a false sense of security.

@ it’s impossible to tell when the activated carbon is exhausted. That’s an intrinsic problem with activated carbon based systems. That’s why Grayl say to replace the cartridge after x many litres. If it’s been used heavily for 6 months it’s probably all used up and no longer removing pathogens.
