As usual with literature there are a couple of readings. Some critics suggest that he is preyed on by his past and that he cannot 'outspend' his humble origins despite his purity of motive. Others suggest that it is his purity and idealised love that cannot be sustained in a world of cynicism and corruption and therefore it is the world that preys on him. I prefer this idea as his love for Daisy cannot survive the realities of the world and the society they live in. This also supports the concept that the American Dream is false. Total Education Media I never considered Gatsby’s love and pursuit for the shallow Daisy as a metaphor for the myth of the American Dream. Thank you. You gave me a lot to think about.
