Napoleon invaded Egypt in 1798. He wanted to dig a canal in Egypt to connect the Mediterranean and the Red sea. He captured Cairo and led an expedition against Ottoman Syria. However, he was defeated at the siege of Acre. In the end, Napoleon was forced to flee Egypt despite the British naval blockade of the Egyptian ports. Finally, the French army in Egypt surrendered in 1801.
