"It was a clear note, golden as the Horn was golden. The trees around them seemed to resonate with it, and the ground under their feet, the sky overhead. That one long sound encompassed everything." That will forever be one of my favorite passages in literature.

Reading his shout of "The Light, and Shinowa!" made me cry. The confession just before, the acceptance of what he must do, and his triumphant sacrifice together make up one of my favorite scenes in the entire series.

I missed Lan in this book as well, but by the end I liked how Jordan built the connection between Rand and Lan without Lan actually being present. We knew from the beginning that Lan’s lessons and wisdom about sheathing the sword would help Rand, but I really loved how it played out in these ending chapters; contemplating with Turak; becoming reality for Ingtar, and finally how Rand ends the battle with big bad B. Lan really cares about Rand in his own way not connected to Moiraine, and that caring saved the day in this book!

Just finished the 2nd book. It also took me a week to get through. Loved this book. Definitely feels more like it's own thing. Loved Matt in this book: he always had me laughing out loud. I appreciated Rand's development into more of a leader. Perrin is a favourite character for me but I felt he got sidelined in this book except for a handful of POV. I wonder why no one notes the parallel between Fain and Gollum. Great mythology and world building. The Damane were a welcome addition. The last battle in the book was epic. Arthur Hawkwing coming back from the dead had me on the edge of my seat.

"I have won again, Lews Therin" gives me chills EVERY TIME!! Yeah, man, this series is not PG. Who told you that? I know that by the time I'm typing this, you are well past book six (I'm not to that review yet) but the final scenes of that book are going to be absolutely brutal on screen. Red Wedding who? I guess they meant PG regarding sex, since that's mainly all off-page? But this series is extraordinarily violent at times. I gotta admit, I did not like Mat for almost the entire series. Until Sanderson got a hold of the character, which turns out to be when the rest of the fandom says Mat stopped being Mat. But every story needs a trickster, right? His story is FASCINATING, though! I may not like Mat as a person if he was in real life, but his part in the story is definitely important and unique! I am for sure in the minority with that opinion, though. The fact that all the characters have strengths but also flaws is one of my favorite things Jordan did. They feel so much more real.
@mikesbookreviews
@mikesbookreviews 4 жыл бұрын
I think most consider all traditional fantasy prior to the 2000's PG so it get misrepresented a lot. I knew of things like Black Company and Elric during that time, but not many ever described them as "traditional" fantasy. I think with no intense description of sex and violence folks think it's PG. Hearing that Mat was most of the fandoms favorite character before even starting was probably a bad thing. Because I'm not sure I would have felt as passionately about his predicament in Ebou Dar later had I formed my own opinion.
@GnarledStaff
@GnarledStaff 2 күн бұрын
Robert Jordan’s writing style makes things feel less brutal because he limits the explicit details… but he doesnt shy away from the bad things happening, he just focuses less on the details of the gore and such.

Yes, Eye of the World felt overly derivative but once I got to The Great Hunt my view on the entire series changed. Which is weird, since the Hunt itself is just a search for the Holy Grail as a concept. But still, Great Hunt alone made Eye of the World worth going through.

I'm loving these book reviews man. I read the wheel of Time ages ago (and stopped in the middle) and your videos are bringing back the sweet memories when I discovered fantasy books back in 2014/15 . I would also recommend pillars of the earth. It's not fantasy it's in real life (or however you would call a grounded story) and the drama is just perfect every character is multidimensional the story is intense. Definitely a must read if you haven't. I'll be waiting for a review if you ever get to it

The Aes Sedai test, as well as all the possible futures that the characters experienced are tough to stomach. There is so much burried in each of us and most of us, thankfully, never get to see the most tragic part(s) of ourselves. We accept that we’re fallible, but take comfort in the fact that if we’re not desperate enough, we won’t have to experience how fallible we actually are. The future that each character experiences and the novice to accepted trials are like “This is you in your most dire straits, deal with it… OK, all done, enjoy the rest of your existence.”

The last time I read TGH was over 15 years ago. I just finished my most recent re-read and I'm glad I'm doing this. There are many scenes/plot lines that I remember, even after 15 years (the game of houses, the Portal Stones, the battle at the end of the book, the Seanchan damane, Selene.) I forgot how much more I enjoyed The Great Hunt compared to The Eye of the World, even though I love them both. I'm taking a brief, palate cleansing break before I start The Dragon Reborn.

I finished this book back in 1993! Making me feel ancient. The Great Hunt is the best. Almost works on its own. Remember when this book came out, we did not have as much good fiction to get. We had Tad Williams, Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman, Game of Thrones was not on the radar, and other not so great books. In 2020 you may be more critical. Check out The Magic of Recluse, and Assassins Apprentice, you may not like the narration being in the first person and the pacing, but I enjoyed both. Oh and out of genre (sci-fi) Midshipman's Hope by David Feintuch, won a Hugo award.

Thanks for this review. I'm onto this book after taking a 2 book break after the great eye. I think that's what I'm going to do between each book unless I'm so hooked at the end of one I simply MUST get right to the next. Oh also we do briefly learn that MO is blue Ajah in the first book I THINK when she's talking to Loial for the first time in the library(what a great scene imo). I commented on a community post a while back it was a picture of you saying I can't wait to read Dune again. I forget EXACTLY what I said but I k ow it was something along the lines like "well there ARE other books out there". Who the hell am I to question what you read or tell you what to read?! I was a dickhead for saying that and I apologize. Just wanted to clear that up...if you even happen to see this comment. Your videos are what finally got me to pull the trigger and read the first book because you were reviewing these AS you read them so it wasn't just another super fan saying READ THEM. That's also where I got the "break" idea between books as I don't want to burn myself out. Thanks man for all the hard work and time you put into these videos.

The Great Hunt is one of my favorites in the series but a unique mark against it is the portal stones. At some point while reading the series I realized the concept of the portal stones and parallel worlds was dropped and not going to be expanded upon. Hell, even within the book they're featured in, they aren't consistent. The first encounter with one takes Rand to the parallel world while the second (and any other subsequent uses in the series) merely acts as a means of teleportation.

I love your reviews. I just finished this one, not quite as quick as you are but its nice to watch your reviews when I finish. I agree the final act was a real page turn-er. I'm a little frustrated with Rand and Perrin being so resistant to everything. I get that they're simple small town kids who didnt ask for this but you'd think even occasionally they'd embrace what they are and be a bad ass instead of just being forced into everything. I havent read many fantasy series though so maybe I'd feel differently if I had. Jordan knows how to end a book and keep me going though, this one did have a lot of slow parts, but definitely better than the first book. We'll see where it goes.

Thanks so much for watching and commenting. No spoilers here, but I'll say that I had the same problems with Rand and Perrin and by the end of book 4, Perrin is my favorite character in the story. Jordan definitely backloads his books. Folks refer to the "Sanderson Avalanche" since everything huge happens in the final act of all Brandon Sanderson books; well it's easy to see where he learned from since he grew up reading these and then was picked to finish them.

@@mikesbookreviews I've been interested in reading some Sanderson books as well. I'm not sure if I'm going to try and finish all 14 books and then move on if I should take a break after a few and come back. I'm about a third through the dragon reborn at this point. What do you recommend I do? I havent read any other fantasy besides a few YA series in high school and LOTR but I think its primarily all I'll be reading for a while.

@@rosseller2045 I think it depends on if you're worried about burnout. I had so much other stuff I want to read, too, that I broke up my Wheel of Time plan into 4 sections with other books in between. That's why I'm just now on book 5. Also depends on how well you retain information. WoT has a LOT of characters and locations. Starting another fantasy world could be confusing. Really just depends on how strong of a reader one is, I figure. I have no shame in keeping notes while I read ha ha

@@mikesbookreviews thanks for the advise. I'd say I retain information pretty well. I haven't honestly been overwhelmed by the first 2 books at all and find myself remembering most locations and names instantly when they're brought up again. I dove pretty deep into middle earth and all of Tolkien's stuff and I think that part of my brain finds this a bit easier. I think I may finish 3 or 4 of the WOT books then maybe do the first law trilogy since you're putting up reviews of those too, I've heard good things from most people about those. I'm hesitant to read song of ice and fire because I'm really not liking the TV series ending and its putting a bad taste in my mouth (I know that's not fair for the books).

@@rosseller2045 If you're an Appendices or Silmarillion Lord of the Rings guy, you'll be fine with the lore of WoT. As for First Law, man that series is so good. I feel like Patrick Rothfuss gets the praise and recognition that Joe Abercrombie deserves. Very much looking forward to continuing the books in that universe.

* *****Spoilers ahead***** I love that Thom assassinated King Galldrian, thus triggering the civil war for the succession of the Sun Throne which leads to so many problems/opportunities for Rand throughout the next several books in the series. And all stemming from Rand burning the invitations he was sent early in the book. I can't wait to see your reaction to Thom and Moiraine's and Lan and Nynaeve's relationships, Egwene as Amyrlin Seat and Matt the General. Great stuff.

I read though the first six books in this series before putting it down. I am currently reworking my way though the series by listing to the audio books. I have to say, I forgot how many amazing moments there are in this book. From Rands conversation with the Armalyn, all of Lan's interactions with Nynave, Everything that happened in the last ten chapters, and of course the Accepted trial

I finished The Great Hunt a few hours ago and I loved every page of it. Granted, I think I read it too fast (as I do with most books) and ended up missing a few pages by accident. Finished the book in only 3 days. I think if every book ends with Rand fighting Shai'tan in an epic climactic duel I'll be dissatisfied. I think I agree with you that the final act was so much cooler than the rest of the book. I agree with you on basically every part, and the few things I disagree with you on I think I only disagree cause I read too fast and missed what you're talking about. If I could, I would be starting the Dragon Reborn right now. But, I made a foolish decision and left that at home when I came back to my apartment so its gonna be a long school year with no more Wheel of Time for me. Just gotta re-read the first two and read and re-read the Mistborn Trilogy...

Not 100% certain what you are asking but if its about the Seanchan, they are months of travel away and Aes Sedai are not allowed to use the one power as a weapon outside of certain circumstances.

The first 3 really were just me recording “video diaries” to be able to go back to and reference as I read the series. So I didn’t get everything. Just the notes I scribbled down while reading the first time.

The problem with the first and the second book is that when all hell breaks loose they participants are having philosophical conversation and blathering around like nothing happens. And Ba'alzamon appears to be a chatty idiot. Perrin is AWESOME, Rand even thought started as a mary sue he has hard choices. Hurin was a good enjoyable dude and Lan is a great character ( even though it was in it in a very few scenes )
