The Great Land Robbery: How Federal Policies Dispossessed Black Americans of Millions of Acres

Over the 20th century, black people in the U.S. were dispossessed of 12 million acres of land. Half of that loss - 6 million acres - occurred over just two decades, from 1950 to 1969, a period largely associated with the civil rights struggle. This mass land dispossession, which affected 98% of black agricultural land owners, is part of the pattern of institutional racism and discrimination that has contributed to the racial wealth gap in the United States. Many of the driving forces behind this land theft were legal and originated in federal policies, as documented by Vann Newkirk, staff writer at The Atlantic. His latest piece for the magazine is the September cover story: “The Great Land Robbery: The shameful story of how 1 million black families have been ripped from their farms.”

@@f8accompli238 - Your correct it is written and it is accurate. But do not be deceived as to why this happened. It is two fold, first because God's children turned aside, so He left them to their own means as a lesson that they might learn and that was the result, the adversary tried to take advantage of the opportunity created from letting their guard down. Secondly, so He would be justified when He rights everything. The True lesson here is that without God man is nothing but dust. This is the same reason for the situation today, most would rather run from God, still.. after all the evidence.. and proof.. and testimony, paid for with many lives. All this non sense of people trying to go it on their own simply does not work out and the reason is that is the way of the ungodly, since they do not know God and have none to turn to but themselves.

@@seanregehr4921 God is WITHIN. The Chrisitian bible is a tool to keep those who follow it spiritually and mentally enslaved, and thinking it's all "prophesized." As soon as black people wake up from the dogma and get in touch with our true spirituality (not religion), we will be far better off. Christianity is roughly 2,000 years old, so what happened to the ancient spiritual knowledge that preceeded it?

My Dad use to tell stories about how they only got half the price as white farmers for there cotton when they sold it because they were black. Under cutting wages has always been, in this country as a way to keep black people poor. This has been done deliberately for centuries.

Martin Luther King is part of the enduring problem. He unwittingly led black people into a trap. Integration was a mistake and towards the end of his life he realized it. He said "I fear I have integrated my people into a burning house" but by then it was too late. Black people would be so much better off had they stayed segregated. There would be more black schools, hospitals, financial institutions and corporations and black wealth would stay in the black communities for mich longer than it currently cycles. Not to mention so many young black people wouldn't be losing their minds behind the negative influences of "White America" and we wouldn't be getting gunned down in the streets of America by racist storm troopers because we'd be policing our own neighborhoods. Integration was a fatal mistake. Martin Luther King helped put us in this box. Why you think he has a National day and Malcolm X doesn't? It's a "thank you for your service".

I’m white and an old southern woman and this is heartbreaking! How much more will we learn from real history if the truth comes out!! It is always always the rich white man that comes out on top .. like my grandfather lost his farm cause he couldn’t pay his taxes during the depression but the banker could see his family could purchase it at a pitiful amount .. the same folks that did this to him are still there and well off today .. but it was my great grandparents that cleared that land and made that 300 acres into farming land with fruit trees he planted .. so I can somewhat empathize .. but this is so low and disgusting .. I can’t think the heartache these people went through.. I hope they do get some compensation!

I can't help but think about how your family "acquired" that land in the first place...I wonder who your family stole it from or purchased it from someone else that stole it. What Native Americans had to be pushed off or killed for that land and how many black slaves had to work it in order for your family to have those 300 acres. It's laughable that you would compare your loss to that of the black people in this story. They were brought here against there will and had no other choice, but to farm that land. White people always find a way to benefit from others suffering even to gain sympathy. This is white supremacy at work. You couldn't just comment on the loss of the black farmers, but had to inject yourself into the comments. smh...

Classcism is different from racism. Your grandfather didn't pay his taxes however there was not system preventing him or running him off his land. Blaming the "rich" white man absolves other classes of racism when it is on all levels. From the white house to local governments. Also, during this depression you got policies to help you by FDR. Your father not paying his taxes was bad but racism never caused that.

Time of passage was 3 - 4 months. That means 200 vessels/ships per year would have to travel carrying 300 people. One ship could make 3 passages per year. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database says there were 1100 - 1400 voyages made over that 300-year period. If that is the case and each ship carried 400 people, the total number would be 560,000 Africans were transported. That number is close to the claim in Item 3 that says there were 600,000 slaves in the 13 colonies, Because of the way, humans were tightly packed one-half of them died in route. In Item 4, there were 4.5 million slaves in the US in 1860. After the Civil War 3.5 million slaves were freed. Did Native American tribes help slaves escape or were Americans with African ancestry already part of the Native American Nations that existed before Columbus arrived on the scene? We know Native Americans were enslaved, and Native Americans also enslaved people, but were these people who were enslaved Native Americans of African ancestry? .

They have proof black people were living here in this country too right along with the Indians. I watched a video of a film the other day where a white man was excitedly talking about the artifacts found in America and how black people here were actual leaders based on clothing and headdress. He excitedly explained that everyone would know that information in no time. The film I think took place in the early 70s. We never heard of that info. They shut it down. Most likely calling it unreliable and whatever else.

I've noticed this since I was a small child and saw first hand the land disparities. There's a lot of land but little to none available to buy, even in small portions. Most of the land, especially the farmland, is owned by large private farmers or corporations. It's amazing

I'm black and raised in the south. Just saying. Speaking for my own family, we suffer from generational poverty because of this and poor choices. But financially, because of this. The land and resources my grandparents and great grandparents had-didn't get passed on to us. We never benefited from the wealth that WAS in our family. Instead we started over, with little to nothing, I speak from experience.{ including male counterparts in our homes.} But I'm also a firm believer in "life is what you make it." Yet ppl overlook the FACTS that most of the population are descendants of families with financially stable and moderate income households. That are secure from economic means and advantages. Reprerations? Well..... How about the abolishment of the one sided racist policies and practices. How about equal distribution of monetary establishment to Allow Black Folks WHO WANT IT grants to buy homes, businesses, to go to back to school or acquire training. How about to NOT have harsh and permanent consequences for minor ( Misdemeanor) offenses. Some of us have felonies for something STUPID that prevents them from making a new start in life!!! How about that!?!? Or how about to actually receive what's due for hard work put in. From entertainer to the working class black folks. ANY MINORITIES for that matter! Promotions, Raises, Empowerment! WE'LL DO THE REST IF THE GOVERNMENT WILL JUST DO THAT!!!!! BUT we live in an evil/ corrupt world, so I realize that may not happen from the government.
