I’ve been a trawler man engineer and skipper and my heart goes out to them I went to work for a Spanish company called pesca and gone done over on wages as the fish went from Uk to the Spain and they tell us the fish is rotten total lies , another company mackerel fishing in Shetland called Buschini in the 90s was fiddling fish by going to Shetland then running a full ship of fish to the Faroese selling it for £25,000 The crew got nothing and they got done after 30 yrs and fined but still sold there quota for 60 million sterling a real scandal no thought for tomorrow….I have done my time and now I just go shrimping with a push net and have enough to live on for brown shrimp …….and more satisfaction ………and I watch my fishery…..good luck to the NZ lads and companies the only thing to do to sort it is to just close company’s that use foreign vessels….I started fishing in 1975 and finished 2021 40+ years and the Uk fishing is as bad as theNZ boys

In Britain our government has ,been doing the same to our fishing fleet, since the sixties. The trouble is it's not just the fishermen that suffer, there,s a whole industry behind them, contrary to what people see on TV,our fishing fleet is no more.Forgein vessels have free rein to strip our shores of fish, not being in EU market has made it worse,we can't even control our own fish industry. We have a government with no backbone to stand up for our own fishing rights,as an ex fisherman I know how you feel.

In the UK when we left the EU, we were promised we would get our fishing back, EU fishing boat continued to fish in UK waters, we were sold out, and told UK fishing was worth less than a footballers wages, the EU still plunder our waters, now the EU are using Irelands waters to take what they can, while Irish boats sit in port, EU takes billions in fishing from anybody they can.

We're a victim of overseas decision makers now & the IMF can jerk our chain anytime we look like getting out of line. Any saving grace we have is as a mediator between the West & China. It's a great shame this film was buried for 15 years, in a manner apparently inaccessible to the general public. It is now too out of date to have real impact - as it could have, had it been clearly available on the internet when it was first made. It's message could have been amplified on Wikipedia and other venues, and things might be very different today.

The exact same thing is happening in the Uk too, huge European trawlers come in and catch what they want, never get monitored by the Fisheries protection, land their catch into a Spanish refrigerated truck. They don’t even use the local vendors as all oils, stores and consumables come in the truck that takes the fish back. The Uk govt started a Marine Protection scheme so certain areas were classed as MPAs and we were not allowed to fish in them during spawning and months either side but yet the foreign owned vessels were allowed inside these areas whenever they wanted. Most Fishermen voted for Brexit yet the govt. still gave 75% of our quota to European vessels.

I am so amazed with this movie. No, I am not a fisherman, have been in th NZ Navy in the 1950/60's ass a reservisit and have a grand son who is a fisherman and that is why I took an interest in this movie. It is not unreasonable to ask why our Government is not doing something about all this. I do realize the big fishing industry people may have them by the short and curlies, but still cant understand why they cannot stand up to those people and firstly do something about the quota system that is been given to foreign vessels through white collar people that dont care for anything except the dollar which they, a a few, may spend locally while the majority of our fishermen cannot due to the way the imbalance on finance is spread. I do, as many see, the problems of bottom trawling is a problem to our environment but reducing these large factory ships, be they NZ owned or leased, were taken off our shores the footprint by our NZ owned and registered ships and boats would return the ocean bottom to an accptable level and possibly with the fish take returning that semi-pelagic trawling could be introduced and it would eleviate much of the environmental problem and let the fishermen control their own future. SO COME ON THIS NEW GOVERMENT, GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER, STAND UP FOR YOUR OWN CONSITUENTS AND PROVIDE LEGISLATION THAT WILL BENEFIT BOTH THEM AND THE ENVIRONMENT - DONT SIT ON YOUR HANDS AND LET THE HANDS OF THE MONEY HUNGRY BE CHOPPED OFF AT THE WRIST!!!!!!!

The solution? Well simple really if the Government has the motivation to act! Below is a list of possible actions that could be implemented....As for the accountants.....Accountants screwed over many companies here in Australia in the 1980's thru to 1990's focusing on the bottom line, trying to cut costs rather than develop new markets or market share. Not true of every company but too many with the result that manufacturing capability and capacity shriveled while underdeveloped countries boomed.....all for the $$$. There will be people who disagree with this statement but a factual review will reveal the truth in what I claim here. Jut ask a few manufacturing companies in Australia.....I speak for my own and we manufacture and support local! It works! Take note.... the very large corporate companies have been silently monopolizing local markets. Don't believe me...then review the product mix of your local supermarket giant. You will discover they have been gradually introducing their own lower cost brand at the expense of historic brands! Unless checked there will be few brands remaining and the large corporate companies will yield too much power. The losers are the primary producers as they get screwed by these corporate giants in the process. This is not that dissimilar to the NZ fishing industry situation. Hence the analogy. So to the fate of the NZ fishing industry, the people and the NZ GDP, I offer the following: 1) Impose the same OH&S standards on any vessel fishing in NZ waters. Use the Nz vessels as the de-facto standard. The vessels must be independently audited prior to conducting any fishing in NZ waters. These vessels receive the accreditation (not the company, owning them or the company(s) chartering them). 2) Enforce local jobs by insisting at least 70% of the jobs on the accredited vessels are crewed by NZ nationals (yes people with a valid citizenship with familial history in NZ....not someone with a working visa!) and must have independent NZ observers onboard at all times. That implies 3 observers per vessel, one per shift, with full authority to review any part, process, people or accounts on that vessel. The only people misaligned with this are those currently sub-contracting the fishing to foreign vessels to deliberately evade OH&S law in NZ and screw everything down to the last dollar. These people have a questionable moral compass. 3) Give the organization charged with the oversight of fishing vessel operations the authority to audit any company contracting foreign vessels (& local...treat all the same!) for fishing with full access to accounts, OH&S policies, procedures and performance. 4) Make the companies that are contracting foreign vessels responsible for the OH&S and fair work conditions of workers on these fishing vessels. Impose the same responsibility on the vessel captains. Oh! This means leveling the playing field. Shock, horror! 5) Enforce factual catch reporting with hefty penalties if they are found cheating. That is treat breaches as serious offences and confiscate the vessel and force the companies to pay the workers fair wages missed while the vessel is impounded. Penalties can be: a) significantly reduced catch allowance, ie can only cover all costs plus 10% and VAT/GST, until issues rectified and audits passed. b) penalties for companies contracting foreign vessels for beaching fair wages conditions and make the directors personally liable for the breaches so they cannot use the Phoenix tactics and claim bankruptcy then launch a new company to start again. 6) Any company wishing to be involved in the fishing industry must undergo a training/induction program that covers all responsibilities/authorities/best practice/sustainability, etc to receive accreditation to then engage fishing vessels from NZ or foreign owned to fish. 7) They must apply for a licence to conduct fishing operations. 8) The organization charged with oversight of the fishing industry must be independently audited, cannot have associations with any people, company or other organization that can create conflict of interest. There must be open reporting by this organization. 9) The organization described in (8) must act on reports from observers and have authority to conduct investigations following up on independent reports of breaches. Cannot be a toothless tiger. If a Government sets up such an organization it must be properly funded and supported....not like our toothless ACCC! 10) Civil penalties should apply to individuals, companies or organizations for falsely reporting breaches, or found to be unjustly persecuting companies or individuals as a result of false reports. There must be accountability at all levels or people will manipulate the system. The fishing industry issue could have been solved decades ago if people bothered to act and work together. Already it's sounding like a massive legal framework but it's not impossible and shouldn't take a lifetime to implement even if staged focusing on elements of the problem that ultimately develop the framework.. For example the OH&S standards & fair work agreements. That will probably cure 80% of the problem fairly swiftly. Don't take 10 years to implement! We all know and are well aware that Governments can act decisively when votes count and normally warring factions and parties can work together when an issue bares a common interest. They can't ignore a ground swell of support from the citizens....Just review the history of France ...it works though I'm not suggesting something as extreme as a revolution! But people don't have to wait for elections to have an impact! Time is jobs, quality of living, fishing stock and habitat health........ Those in a position to act, this is pointed at Government, that shrug this off as too hard or impossible should be given a vote of no confidence and kicked out of the government position they hold elected or otherwise.....either way disgraced! To those in government ....never forget that you are chosen to serve the people, to make the decisions for the common good.....not for making decisions that serve your own purposes and handing out edicts with the expectation that people should agree. OVER TO YOU MY NZ BROTHERS!

BAN ALL FOREIGN COUNTRIES ACCES TO FISHING IN ANOTHER COUNTRIES TERRITORIAL WATES. Arrrest the official that is currently authorizing this, if found to be guilty of fraund or receiving underhand payments. Third world countries fish stocks are completely devistated by such illicit practices, while local fishermen are now largely destitute. Take control of your supposedly First World country !!!!!!

The South China Sea and China's aggression is a typical example and is a big warning sign of what to expect if our Politicians let them in and keep trading as if nothing adverse is going to happen ? The country should be striking over this issue as a whole and not over wages for nurses, Even though thats important by fighting for & retaining our fish stocks and not losing 1/2 of the revenue by doing it. Then the Country could afford to pay higher wages across the board and repair damaged infrastructure plus transfer 10% to Maori for Housing, Business initiatives and welfare. We should get back to trading with our Alies more. The USA & AUS, Israel, Canada, France, India, UN, Western Countries etc, And in return invite USS Ford, Super Carrier with Destroyers to patrol the Region, And open our ports to US Navy Nuclear Powered and Armed Ships. They've already said on the News that NZ has been added to 22 other countries Russia and China sees as hostile to them, So to no surprise ! Allow those US Boats in or get overrun by a country with billions of mouths to feed ?

Yeah I've never understood the Kiwis over the ditch, they allow massive foreign ships. Some of these ships catch, clean, package and ice down the fish ready for market. So no time wasted unloading fish at shore then travelling all the way back out, it's all done on the ship so they can keep plundering the ocean 24/7. This is an older doco but they still have foreign ships plundering the Kiwi's fishery. As for not knowing how to catch fish in deep water, why not hire some experts and learn from them, instead of allowing god knows how many ships in to help themselves. New Zealand with it's tiny population and once massive fishery, the amount of work it would've given is immense, the fishery would've been looked after correctly, Kiwi's fish consumption would be pushed by government etc and all would've been a winner. It must be corruption at some level, why would a government allow their country to be robbed of millions of dollars, it can't be any other reason, except stupidity and no one is that stupid

Whingeing local fishermen complaining about foreign vessels raping and pillaging the fishing stocks strangely have no comments when they themselves are doing all the raping and pillaging. Yet point the finger to recreational fishermen for dwindling stock.

@bennichols1113 HAHAHAHAHAHA....Oh, far out, you are hilarious, sir. Oh wow, ha, as if any goddamn politician is ever held accounrable for their actions & they certainly never are when the should be the most. Even their enemies in the opposite parties will draw a line lest similar repercussions occur to them for their "transgressions." That's the time you see what party the established & career politicians really belong to,....Thy Self First. When they make statements to the public on any given situation, they are lying. They never give an honest account of either whats taken place or what they truly intend to do. On top of that, you can end up with a frankenstein of a government from coalitions. A party getting the least votes can then bark the loudest or bite the hand that feeds it or be the proverbial tail that wags the dog. Vote, huh? Dont ever lose that sense of humor. you're priceless. If only the politicians could fill all the halls with YOU, a believer. Ha, now im being funny as well. 😄

I wasn't aware that a racial classification would be the determining factor in whether some people catch fish & others don't. I'll let you in on a secret,.. we/me as a honkie aint gettin too many fish either or a turn with any customary rights card. Here I was thinking we had an issue common to every average Kiwi, but as usual, we can't have 1 voice & it gets broken down & the focus gets misdirected into a race issue. Poor you, how would you like your seafood, sir? Handed to you on a platter like everything else? As a citizen of this planet, every freaking person should have an ability & an EQUAL right to feed themselves from an ocean that belongs to everybody & and no one.

@bennichols1113 my apologies, I was so taken with the laughable idea of the political system correcting bad or unintended policy mistakes with the publics effective use of voting power as was intended to be the case that I didnt see you were only offering an option to a snivelling whinger diverting focus from an "every person" issue to wave a flag for a non existent "race" issue. Again, my apologies.

The problem with NZ is the government are getting lobbied by the big fishing company's constantly and the gutless politicians pander to what ever they ask for and who knows what back door deals are going on as well. the quota system is a joke because of this, they set the quoter system so high that they might as well not even have one, and I know because I have been in the industry all my life I am disgusted the way the fish stocks in this country have been plundered.

new Zealand needs to get tough and confiscate foreign boats and jail the captain and those who own the boats.. its like people taking too many and under sized pauas, they just get slap on hand where penalties need to be much more severe including long prison sentences or there will be nothing left for future generations. but sadly to say I think its too late rich and powerful people who have grasped the controls and ignorant individuals will continue to plunder until nothing is left
