Full Western Movie, Full Length Cowboy Film, English: The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid (original title), Runtime 1h 31min, Western, 9 August 1972 (West Germany).
The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid is a 1972 Technicolor Western film about the James-Younger Gang distributed by Universal Pictures. It was directed by Philip Kaufman in a cinéma vérité style and starred Cliff Robertson as Cole Younger, Robert Duvall as Jesse James, Luke Askew as Jim Younger, R. G. Armstrong as Clell Miller, John Pearce as Frank James, and Matt Clark as Bob Younger. The film purports to recreate the James-Younger Gang's most infamous escapade, the September 7, 1876, robbery of "the biggest bank west of the Mississippi" in Northfield, Minnesota.
The gangs of Jesse James and Cole Younger join forces for a bungled robbery of the bank in Northfield, Minnesota.
Director: Philip Kaufman
Writer: Philip Kaufman
Stars: Cliff Robertson, Robert Duvall, Luke Askew

PLOT: In 1876, the Missouri legislature issues a pardon and amnesty to the James and Younger gangs despite many people considering them outlaws. The pardon is because they protected the homesteaders of Clay County against the marauding railroaders, who wouldn't let anyone or anything get in their way of building the railroad where they wanted. However, the railroad companies and banks still consider them outlaws and will take matters into their own hands if they come across the gangs. Prior to the pardon, Cole Younger had contemplated robbing the First National Bank in Northfield, Minnesota - what is considered the largest bank west of the Mississippi - but has now decided against it. Circumstances, including learning that Jesse James and his gang are going ahead with the robbery behind his back, and that the railroaders issuing a war against them which also includes bribing the legislature to revoke the pardon, make Cole change his mind. But right from the start - even during the planning... (Written by Huggo)

Thank you for sharing this. I live less than 2 miles away from the filming locations. I’ll be making a filming locations video on this film very soon. An absolute classic, filmed in one of the most beautiful areas in Southern Oregon. There are so many places that I instantly recognized while watching this. Today was my actual first viewing of this movie and I was only able to do so because you’d shared it for free here.

I live 65mi W of Northfield, and every Sept they put on a re-enactment of that bank robbery. I've seen so many different movie versions it is hard to separate fact from fiction BUT one thing is clear...They underestimated the will of the townspeople of Northfield and they let their confidence in being guerilla fighters cloud their judgment. I live 30mi from LaSalle, MN where Cole Younger and those left were caught by a chasing posse. After they were all shot-up, those who survived of which Cole was one, were surprised at their captors' kindness as they fully expected to be hung on the spot. They weren't and Cole and one of his brothers whose name I forgot were actually paroled from Stillwater State Prison, which is still in use today...

Studios really didn't begin to strive for accuracy in westerns until the late 70's, I've always liked this movie, and whereas the story is incorrect as to what really happened--the widow woman & the landlord story happened much earlier & happened in Missouri, not Minnesota, and Jim Younger's mouth wound happened during the ill-fated bank robbery attempt there in Northfield--they did manage to get a good number of details correct. But any film about the James/Younger gang has always been filled with inaccuracies, still, it doesn't take away the simple fact that this is a great film to kick back & watch. Thanks much for the excellent upload !

They all rode to Northfield together. Henry Wheeler shot from an upper floor hotel room, not from the street. All the gang were hit by bullets in Northfield. Only three robbers went into the bank. Two stayed on the bridge and the other three stayed outside the bank. It was Frank James that went into the vault, but got out as the door was slammed shut. His arm was caught in the door and badly hurt. The Youngers and James' agreed to split up after a few days on the run because the Youngers were hit worse and were slowing everyone down. The posse did catch the Youngers at Hanska Slough, but this was a swamp/forest and the gang hid behind a deadfall, not the posse. There was no farm house. There was no widow lady. There was no calliope, But Cole did get shot 11 times. Frank and Jesse headed west to South Dakota, and then back south. The Pinkertons were not involved. And it was Clell Miller that wore his hat with the brim front pinned back.

@xjstwr
@xjstwr 2 жыл бұрын
@Bohappenstance Click At Northfield, it was a posse from the town. The Pinkertons were after them early in the James' career, but after 2 agents were found dead, no agents would agree to pursue them in Kansas or Missouri. It was hopeless anyway, the James' had many friends and those that weren't friends would never say anything to the Pinkertons from fear.

And the Proud Boys were born, proving inbreeding is alive and well in the heart of the Babble belt. Duvall has definitely captured the essence of an unhinged Jesse. I don't recall ever reading that Jesse James was a religiously inspired bank robber. I think in my humble opinion of course that Pitt did a much better portrayal. I keep expecting to see Duvall squat down and say "I love the smell of mule shit in the morning." Even the Long Riders was way more quality work than this concoction. The historically accurate props were the best offering here, the wardrobe and structural design, inventions of the industrial age making their way west was a nice touch. Oh well, every director has his own way to tell a story. Thanks for the upload, your effort is appreciated.

Love The Channel!! I'm a huge fan of Jesse James and several of the movies about his life and exploits. I enjoy this one but it's rather strange in several way. At times its very comical, but I'm not sure if it was intended to be funny. I know this one is geared a little more towards Cole Younger and his brothers, but I would have love to have seen Duvall get more screen time as Jesse. I really don't understand why they played Frank James a simple minded fool. He was rather smart and probably the brains of the outfit.

oregonwinger64 yes. In gorgeous Jacksonville, Oregon. They covered all the streets with dirt and built wooden sidewalks for the filming. While watching the movie the first place I recognized was the J’Ville Cemetery. The rock wall was far too noticeable. That curvy hill that goes up to the cemetery is unmistakable for anyone that’s visited more than once. Aside from the mountains this area fits perfect for what they were trying to achieve.

@CSA Farmer yes. He was in, “Gods And Generals” playing as General Robert E Lee. He also played in, “Colors” with Sean Penn. A movie I feel was under rated and people at the time didn’t fully appreciate the ability of Duvall and the level of experience he brought to the film. His character range is decent. He carried Sean Penn in the film and Ice T made the song that brought the vibe.

Yes and there were more similarities than that. Perhaps Eastwood got a few ideas from this film . 🤓

Phil Kaufman wrote the screenplay for Josey Wales as well as wrote and Directed this film. I suspect Clint worked with him closely.

That Yarbwoman was using Pow Wow bible/folk magic. Of course, being a Hollyweird movie they have it jumbled up. They mixed a charm for blowing burns in with one for stopping bleeding, along with a couple of other alterations.

@@TheALWAHAT It claims to be based on actual events. I base my history and what I read and NEVER in Hollywood. My point is this type of movie claims to be based historically yet is very inaccurate.
