The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Күн бұрын

President Obama's final State Of The Union speech was long on inspirational messages and short on reasons for Paul Ryan to applaud.

+miller repin because he's a tool and can't form an individual opinion by himself. Obama could say long live the republicans and he still wouldn't applaud because it came from Obama. You know who else does that? 16 year old female teenagers and 6 year old first graders. Gov. Christie hugged Obama and the entire GOP party condemned him. They're all held together by hate and ignorance, that's the only common ground they have with each other.

I ain't American, but I can say that Obama has been a good President. He has shown restraint and openness proving that its not always dick measuring contest when you look at international affairs. I would have imagined US engaged more militarily in the Middle East or across the world if it was some other President. He has always spoken against racism and criticism and urged people not to jump to wrong conclusions.

And the fact that this wasn't the case before, the fact that Republicans and even the NRA agreed with some forms of gun control and now jus burry their head in the sand says it all. I see what you mean about the Martyrdom Fallacy but I think we can agree that it is not 100% the case here.

@SiliconBassist
@SiliconBassist 8 жыл бұрын
+Bill S That was largely due to the failures of Pierce and Buchanan.
@bills755
@bills755 8 жыл бұрын
+SiliconBassist I'm not saying that it was Lincoln's fault that it was divided; just saying that the country was most divided then, and the Civil War took place while he was President (I don't know enough about history to know whose fault it was, so I believe you that Pierce and Buchanan are to blame). But as divided as the parties are now, they're at least not in an actual war against each other. I'm not trying to start an argument over something that happened over 150 years ago; I think I'm mainly saying we shouldn't blame Obama for today's political divisiveness, and that Lincoln, who is often (rightfully so) considered the greatest President, had a much more divided country than we have today (In all fairness, I admit I know nothing about history or politics, but that's just the way it seems to me).

Bill S Lincoln said that if he could free the slaves and save the union, he'd do it. But he also said that he'd keep slavery if it would save the union. Sure, slaves were freed but only in those states in rebellion against the United States. Kentucky didn't secede, hence they kept their slaves. The Repubs aren't all saints; the Dems aren't all sinners.

@chengyanboon
@chengyanboon 8 жыл бұрын
+The Immortal Technically America sort of does (even if Obama isn't directly responsible for it either, but if I understand correctly he's praising America there not himself). Gas prices are low because America started fracking shale gas deposits and OPEC didn't lower production despite increasing supply.
@z-beeblebrox
@z-beeblebrox 8 жыл бұрын
+Chengyan Boon In fact it's kind of a double-edge sword. The reason OPEC didn't lower production was as an attempt to make fracking unprofitable for American companies. Which kind of worked against the companies directly doing the fracking, but the secondary result is it made gas really cheap, which was partly the goal of fracking to begin with.

The segment was going so well but then Stephen had to turn it into something about Trump again. I mean, I get that it's not easy to come up with material for five shows a week and just about anything about Trump practically writes itself. TheOneAndOnlyNAB If this were Fox News or some other conservative-focused show, I would think you would be on to something. But I feel like if there is something going on in that vein, Stephen (and pretty much every other late night show) is more likely trying to keep Trump in the limelight to better his chances of being the Republican nominee so the Democrats have a potentially easier opponent to defeat. Theoretically speaking at any rate, it could just be about ratings.

AlbertClockwork No one has the right to take from someone to pay for something for someone else, period. Life is not free. Not everyone can live a long and happy life, but they can do everything within their power, short of stealing or hurting someone else, to try. There are plenty of skill trades out there that pay well. It just takes 2-6 years of experience and ojt to earn those higher wages. It is quite common to earn no less than 75k per year in these types of jobs. The "everyone needs to go to college to get a decent job" thing is a myth perpetuated by the education industry. This myth is one of the main factors behind the astronomical tuition rates of today. Of course, if you want to sit on your ass behind a computer all day and get paid well, you will probably need some sort of degree or certification depending on what you want to do.

I kind of wished Stephen would stop bringing up trump. It's getting a little old, and it's free publicity for a man who's been feeding off it. It's been his campaign strategy all this time to be provocative and look how well it's worked. Maybe if he actually addressed some of Obama's shortcomings, I'd appreciate the show a little more. I used to watch Letterman because it was actually a talk show despite Letterman's personal liberal bias. But now it seems the Late Show has turned into nothing but a soapbox for the left. Ah well.

+Mikhail Kalashnikov I can agree that trump is getting old, but I feel like Stephen has been pretty unbiased - on this show - in how he reports on both left and right. The thing is, there is more to make jokes about with the right because they are doing more outrageous things that make good comedy fodder, due to the GOP pretty much imploding on an ongoing basis. I mean what things can you name that the dems have done, in the lead-up to the 2016 election so far, that are outrageous and make for good comedy? As it is, he made a joke about Obama doing a mic drop maneuver. He didn't say "Obama is amazing and is everything a president should be."

Colbert Report was an act just to let you know and conservatives have and always will be on the wrong side of history. Those that have fought against change and equality have always been looked at as wrong. One day today's liberals may be tomorrow's conservatives but for today you are wrong
@TheLoyalOfficer
@TheLoyalOfficer 8 жыл бұрын
Aaron Kempster AH, the "wrong side of history"... Looks like some sort of Marxist drivel. That sure has not worked out at all. I would say that the problem is not conservatism - it's the failure of people who call themselves conservative from truly following through on their ideology, which is actually correct and our only hope. Bolshevism always fails.

+TheLoyalOfficer : Yeah, you know what? As a woman, if it was for the ''conservatives'', I wouldn't be able to vote, to take the pill, to complete my doctorate right now, to be a published author (yep, I am as a matter of fact), to own anything at all or just to be respected as a human being. So I would say... fuck the conservatives :)

+J-Roc Tpb um...noooo...there are southern men who beat their wives and justify it w/ the bible...just like there are men who bomb Islam churches for the sake of Christianity (in America) ...ppl still believe there's a separate heaven for black and white ppl... Man can't lay with man but ppl still eat pork and shrimp...men still sleep w/ their wife when she on her period Just like their may be a hypocritical Christian Or a Christian who use the bible for their gain Just like a police may use his/her power for their personal gain Like any human could The fact that you judge and INTIRE creed of ppl Is kinda... Not Christian I'm pretty sure GOD has that job He's does a great job at it I know beautiful humble loving ppl who are Muslim I also know mean nasty heartless ppl who are Christian My point is I would u hope u judge ppl on who they are and not what the media shows Cause in that case I wouldn't be a 4.0 student ... I'd have 12 kids and be in welfare

as a muslim I don't beat my wife which I only have 1 and I don't bomb churches. My wife doesn't wear a hijab and I don't stone anyone. ISIS shouldn't be the one that represents Islam. Think of Hitler representing christianity.

Ovidiu Moldovanu The EU is called the European Union and is comprised of participating democratic countries. They are not states in the same way the states are related to the Fed in the US. The countries are allowed to leave the EU. The states are not allowed to leave the Fed. The EU is an entity where political decisions are made without direct representation by the people. The Federal Government is. I could go on, but the point is simple. The EU is not the same political structure, nominally or realistically, as the US.
