"The Great Outdoors" Filming Location Pictures! Then & Now!

I was here in 2010, in Bass Lake, Ca.
The town of Bass Lake. Where Production of "The Great Outdoors" was underway during the fall of 1987.
The Town that stands today remains almost virtually untouched, with the exception of new/different paint, some changed businesses and an added building (Bass Lake Reality), but like in 1987, the crew really did leave Bass Lake untouched.
It's a small quiet town and it's no wonder they shot there, it's so isolated and such an amazing place to visit!

This was a great trip back to the 80's! Very nice job with this. Thanks for posting. RIP John Candy. One of my all time favorite movies.

@slikkrik - Thanks! This was a fun week! I'm definitely going back here ASAP. Next time, with Video and Commentary. ...Stay Tuned. NOTE- It's not far from Yosemite, CA. In Bass Lake. The town, is basically untouched from what it appeared as, in the film. With the exception of a few sign changes, colors and missing a building or two. Other than that...THE SAME! Good Film. Good times!

I have this on DVD and DVR. Saw it at the theater back in the 80s. This was like being there with them!!

Nice video! This was done very well. I always have loved this movie. We went to Bass Lake on July 4th for our first time in 2013. It was great to see parts of the filming locations. The home in the film was a prop and in order to have it built along the lake needed to be removed immediately following filming to have the property restored to it natural setting. Great job on the video. This is still my all time favorite movie.

My favorite movie/story ever. Just makes you think of good times and adventure. I've seen that movie probably about 300 hundred times.

every year. "millers landing" plays the movie on a big screen on their boat dock....people sit in rafts in the water watching the movie, while paddle board waitresses deliver popcorn.

I've lived this movie as a kid. Always dreamed of going there. Well today it finally came true. I went there and it was so great seeing everything. It's crazy that all the stuff is so grown up. The area is so beautiful. I think that's where I'll retire one day.

the scene where their at the bar w the guy who gets struck by lightning 66" times...is actual a bar called "the pines" still there to this day....big huge pine log going up thru roof at the bar....still there to this day.

Oh I found the cabin its in Universal Studios Hollywood backlot tour thats Awesome its still around can I airbnb it!lol Also RIP John Candy he was Great in every film! And RIP John Hughes he is the 80s movie god so many classics sadly missed! They live on in these movies forever.

Very nice... good job.. was always curious about the filming location and interested in what they had done... The Great Outdoors is definitely one of my top 10 all time favorite movies.

I was so surprised to find out where it was actually filmed! (Bass lake, CA.)/not Clare co. Mi. like the movie dialog would suggest. And yet, this would be my assumption for years to come (while growing up).

Bass Lake, CA is the best. My family and I waterskiied there every year till my early 20's and we all moved away. Reddinger Lake was a great place to ski too.

Wasn’t alive when the great outdoors came out but something about this movie is truly magical compared to movies nowadays. In a not so distant future; When the world population is subdued by a meta verse via some sort of oculus glasses I will be happily remembering bits and pieces of life before it was dominated by technology.

Just like everywhere else in america. We have 4x the people but everywhere seems to be a ghost town. We sold our soul for walmarts and chain restaurants.

In the beginning, was the building where they checked in, Ducey's On the Lake? The place where John Candy says Trees in the parking lot and blows the horn...

the old ducys location was about a mile from new duceys location,,,wasnt built at the same spot....trust me i live here

Cool! Where abouts is the location of the old Ducy's that was used in the film? I have a facebook fan page for The Great Outdoors and I try to find the locations with google and bing maps.

@@Doublekicker74 ok thats a hard question as i only remember by memory...i believe the location was at the link i sent you....this area is now all new modern homes..very beautiful cabin like million $ homes....the link would be the direction john candy was going when he pulled into the lot.

I love the Great Outdoors a classic!! But what about the cabin it played a large part in the movie! Im watching naked gun 33 and a half ha and they go to a cabin and I screen matched the fireplace and it was the Great Outdoors cabin. So if they built a cabin set for the 87 88 shooting odd the cabins still around in 94 but maybe its real if so where is it!? Thanks

The actual cabin was built on a sound stage in California, the outside cabin shots used a prop constructed at Bear Lake and it had to be removed immediately after filming to return the area to its pre shooting conditions

How's that possible?, I thought the cabin in the movie was just a set at universal studios but there's a real cabin at Bass lake?

The cabin shots were filmed on a soundstage , however the actual “lake house” was a prop constructed at Bass Lake ,CA. They used it for outside shots and it had to be removed immediately after shooting was finished. They needed to return the area to it’s pre filming conditions.
