@@user-yj6rb8ci7m I take it you are asking me what are my issues with the video are: Be glad to offer my thoughts. 1) The Great Patriotic War began 2 years into World War II. For the first 2 years of the War, the Soviet Union was a NAZI ally (1939-41). They provided vast quantities of oil and other critical materials that made the German 1940 offensive possible. And like the NAZIs, the Soviets invaded peaceful countries (Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia Lithuania, and Romania, and committed terrible atrocities there. 2) The Red Army had to fight the Germans largely alone in large measure because they aided and supplied the NAZI war machine, playing a major role in the defeat of the French Arny. 3) Part of the reason that the Germans amassed such a powerful invasion force for Barbarossa, was all the assurance the Soviets gave them (19390=-41). 4) There is no real mention of the War in the West which in fact played an important role in the Soviet victory in the East. I find that most Russians today have no idea of the importance of the War in the West. Which I will be glad to detail if you are interested.

I admit that Russia makes some of the most painfully gorgeous movies inthe world. I wish I could speak russian because every language is nuanced and not well suited for accurate translation. We, in the West, were comparitively lucky that Hitler did not treat civillians anywhere so disgracefully as happened in the USSR. I am really distressed by the cruelty visited on the Soviets. No people deserved that disgusting genocidal horror. I have the greatest respect for the extraordinary courage and sacrifice which was common among all russian military and civillian people. An astonishing feat of arms that remains unchallenged in human history. I would love to understand russia's culture, history and contemporary view of the world.

I dare to add that it was not only the Russians, but the Soviets in general that were exposed to utterly inhumane treatment, both soldiers and civilians. For that matter, the same goes for most of the Slavic peoples; e.g., the Germans and their collaborationist wouldn't even spare the heavily wounded Yugoslavian Partisans or the medical personal accompanying them, once captured alive.

@Viktor Ilievski ~ It was a different time. It is a pity that we were in no position to fight together. From your perspective, how could ever hope to win? And at the rate the USA was building carrier groups, I've always wondered why the didn't place some to make life difficult for Germans in strategic regions of the USSR. It might have saved so many lives. The world owed the Soviets a vast blood debt. Please pass my gratitude to any surviving veterans.

@dennisweidner288 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-ds9gj1yd6j Absolutely. Fair question. I can explain HOW the video misrepesents Barbarossa. As to WHY the editors did this I am not at all sure. I believe it is part of a general Russian pattern of attempting to down play the importance of the war in the West. Here are some of the major issues I noticed showing HOW the video misrepresents Barbarossa.: 1. Not a world about how the Luftwaffe was weakened .by the RAF in the Battle of Britain, affecting the air support received by the Ostheer.www.histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/air/eur/bob/bob-out.html 2. A total misrepresentation of the Ostheer. About half the video is a depiction of German tanks. This gives the impression that the Ostheer was a modern highly mechanized force. It was not. About 80 percent of the Ostheer was unmotorized infantry, moving east on foot using horse-drawn carts to carry their supplies. Yet the only horses shown in the video are Red Army horses. www.histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/air/eur/sbc/eco/gie-doh.html 3. Not a word about how the war in the West had cut off the Germans from importing resources, especially oil. There only major source was Ploesti and it was inadequate. www.histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/eco/raw/oil/w2ero-ger.html 4. Not a word about how the Soviets under the Molotov-Ribentropo Pact were supplying the Germans with vast quantities of oil and other strategic materials (1939-41) which helped create the Ostheer that invaded the Soviet Union. 5. Not a word about how the war in the West was forcing the Germans to direct their resources and industry away from the Ostkrieg. It does not take much industry to build horse carts, it does to build aircraft and ships/uboats. www.histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/air/eur/sbc/eco/sbc-gie.html German manpower was in the East, but their industrial production primarily went west leaving the Ostheer poorly supplied and supported. 6. A misrepresentation of Stalin. A 3 million man invasion force moving to the border could not be hidden. The video suggests that warnings got lost in the Soviet bureaucracy. This is not factually correct. In fact Stalin ignored the many reports that got to him and got so many warnings that he ordered NKVD Chief Beria to begin to arrest people sending in the reports. www.histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/camp/eur/sov/stalin/warn/bw-sta.html 7. Inadequate coverage of Stalin's Red Army purges (mid-30s) which especially targeted the officers who believed in mobile warfare and the effective use of tanks--basically any one connected with Tukhachevsky. www.histclo.com/essay/war/com/sov/purge/scsp-mil.html

English Wikipedia Wikipedia address en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lend-Lease During the war the USSR provided an unknown number of shipments of rare minerals to the US Treasury as a form of cashless repayment of Lend-Lease. This was agreed upon before the signing of the first protocol on October 1, 1941, and extension of credit. Some of these shipments were intercepted by the Germans. In May 1942, HMS Edinburgh was sunk while carrying 4.5 tonnes of Soviet gold intended for the U.S. Treasury. By inspecting English/Russia version many time, I think 2 points are debatable: 1) Episode 2 : The Stalin's rule in defense Kiev. Whether Stalin insists no-retreat mandate, 2) Episode 6 : The Soviet fail/achievement(?) in summer campaign ,Marshal Zhukov's failure of Operation Mars are strongly against our "western" perception. I make no comments about these arguments. On the other hand, I do respect this series because it demonstrates the Russian perspective. At least, the un-precedent great sacrifice Russian had made,took 90% brunt of German military machine. All these truth is un-deniable. This series tells us these truth, which was intentionally ignore by western viewers. After I was involving in WW2 eastern front history, I couldn't return to the west front for it's "piece of cake" . Of course, we are learned to make sure this tragic would not repeat again in the foreseeable future. Also, the cinematic and dramatic effect is impeccable. @@chiangju-an2330 Ju-an the issues you raised are debatable. Competent historians debate these issues. There are reasonable arguments on both sides. My issues with this video are factual well established observations on which historians agree: 1. Intelligence on German preparations did not just get lost. Stalin actually ordered Beria (the NKVD chief) to take action against the individuals reporting on the German preparations which he believed to be British disinformation. 2. Ignored the damage the RAF did to the Luftwaffe in he Battle of Britain. 3. Misrepresentation of the Ostheer. The images we see are mostly tanks and some trucks--suggesting a highly modern, mechanized force. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some 80 percent of the Ostheer was unmotorized infantry on foot and using horse-drawn carts. 4. The importance of Soviet deliveries of oil and raw materials to Germany (1939-41) in building up the German military.

For 2 , I don't know any information and I can't comment. Regarding this series itself, I have to point out there is an deficient section. I think most prominent is, the 3rd Kharkov battle which was conducted by Marshal Manstein. The victory is brilliant, and probably one of the greatest offensive-defensive victories in history. The German therefore was still holding initiative through early 1943. This series is jumping from Stalingrad to Krusk without any connection. Is it only an ignorance or, intention? I don't know. It is only a cinema and could not encompass all. I think we should not expect/put that much on some specific issues. Put aside these to historians. On the other hand, this series indeed is a great history record which excites military history fans like me.

@@chiangju-an2330 1. This has nothing to do with the Molotiov-Ribentrop Pact. Stalin ignoring the warnings is well documented. In fact I am working on that very subject. histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/camp/eur/sov/stalin/warn/bw-sta.html But you can Google "Was Stalin warned about Barbarossa" and all kinds if info comes up. 2. Information on German losses in the Battle of Britain are well documented. Easily accessible on the web. I can tell you that in aircraft numbers the Luftwaffe had more or less replaced the losses. But had it now bee for the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe would have been much larger for Barbarossa. And while they replaced planes, they could not replace the many experienced pilots and air crews. And given the size of the Soviet Union, there was a desperate need for air support. 3. I did not see one single German horse, but shot after shot after shot of tanks--tanks galore. They did picture Red Army horses. You have to wonder why they so misrepresented the Ostheer. 4. I suppose that you could argue that the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was a defensive agreement, but the Secret Codicil shows that it was not. histclo.com/essay/war/com/sov/nsnap/nap-cod.html But what is undeniable is that the Soviets delivered vast quantities of oil and strategic materials to the NAZIs. This is well documented. Yes, I agree. The Germans were very good at making war. And it did not help that Stalin shot large numbers of his best generals. Yes, I also enjoyed watching it. The Ostkrieg was the central camapign of the war. And the video does explain some of the movements fairly well.

Soviet Russia Land/Air forces in the West either where aware of the coming *threat* or were not. And whatever this film pretends, what all Russian pilots whom I've seen the testimonies of the June 22 alarms thought: « Oh sh** ! yet another exercise, on Sunday! ». Somehow, Germans had convinced the soviet high command that their troups moving to the East were preparing to head for the English-dominated Middle East. Therefore the Stavka was trying to have the Red army ready for a possible war... next year ie. 1942. Note how the French staff (yeah my country) *knew* for a year that « they'll come »... and managed to react slower still than their Red army counterparts did. This said it's a must for me to watch the *russian* view of WW2 events. спасибо!

Hitler got crushed and has gone down as the biggest monster ever, yet even Stalin & Hitler combined are no match for Chairman Mao's 'cultural revolution that claimed about 50 million victims! Yeah theres no beating the communists when it comes to Pograms and ethnic cleansing with their Gulags and people labelled as enemies and bourgeois capitalists for so much as owning a goldfish' with their cities named after leaders and mayday parades etc, thank God their nuclear state of readiness involves troops having to start the ICBM motor with a cranking handle, or we'd still be in a cold war? Believe me, not only Ukrainians lived in the affected territories - no one specifically destroyed them. By the way, what is there in neighboring countries that year? Or did each country have its own little Stalin who stole food? Here he can be blamed for allowing starvation as the leader of the country but not for the genocide of the people. Stalin got some to blame, objectively he did a lot. But most of these are terrible tales with a very specific focus. Even without trying to assess the motivation, conditions, historical context, compare with other leaders of his era and their actions, etc. etc. Just terrible tales of an alternative, competing system and its leaders. @@dennisweidner288 Ahaha, Putin is moving Russia back to the USSR -another stereotype that is being imposed in the Western media!Remember once and for all, the USSR is first and foremost a SOCIAL FORM OF OWNERSHIP OF the MEANS OF PRODUCTION, and in modern Russia the most natural capitalism.I wonder where the USSR in neighboring countries mistreated the population?This is probably again the old stories about "millions of raped German women", which are distributed by the Western media.Oh, and even Czechoslovakia in 1968 and stories about how "Soviet tanks crushed all peaceful protesters," but the truth is you and such as of course not they will remember what these "peaceful protesters" did. Further, as for losses, it's just "lovely" when someone considers losses in the same military conflict where it is profitable for him, and does not consider where it is unprofitable for him, yes, you are a "genius" of logic!After all, the USSR apparently had everything great at the beginning of the war with the supply and training of troops?That is probably why the Soviet needlework carried out the evacuation of industry beyond the Urals, well, that is, there is nothing to do? And here's another thing: and what about civilized Europe, then almost all fell under Hitler?In how many days did France lose the war there?And for how much is the Czech Republic?But it was the USSR, which suffered defeats at the beginning of the war, bought off, but eventually stood up and ended the war in Berlin, it was the USSR that "threw the enemy with corpses" of its soldiers-I repeat again-you are a straight "genius" of logic!

How could the Russians not know the Germans would double cross them? Stalin was weak initially but recovered, barely

Didn't know that folks on the West are interested in our history. Lit. But there's one thing I'd like to know about : if there are any Americans knowing history well enough or just some historians from the West I'd like to know real USA's role in this war. Here folks say America barely did anything.

As a Chinese, our mainstream opinion is that USA still contributes a lot in the west of Europe but USSR is the main contributer in Europe's battlefield. USA mainly fought Japanese on the Pacific Ocean.

Here is my assessment of the war in the West. The Ostkrieg was the the decisive campaihn in the War. It was won by the Red Army. The Western contribution was to prevent the Germans from using its industry to properly equipping the Ostheer. The Ostheer was not a modern mechanized army. They had some modern units, but 80 percent of the Ostheer was unmotorized infantry. Which meant that the Germans invaded the Soviet Union on foot with horse-drrawn carts for supply. www.histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/air/eur/sbc/eco/sbc-gie.html

@@ploykickshaw9842 You are correct in terms of manpower. But manpower is one factor in warfare. A very important factor, but only one. The war in the West prevented the Germans from adequately equipping the Ostheer. www.histclo.com/essay/war/ww2/air/eur/sbc/eco/sbc-gie.html
