After suffering for almost a decade, the friendship that bonded Deftones together was stronger than ever. After the release of Saturday Night Wrist, the band were ready to write again, and more importantly, write together.
But during this time, Deftones faced their biggest challenge yet. The fruit of their labor resulted in a near-finished album, Eros, that may never see the light of day.

R.I.P Chi. I really hope they get around to releasing Eros, either as an album or an EP. Chi was simply the perfect bass player for Deftones. His basslines are just sublime!

I can’t describe the goosebumps I got on the evening of November 2 2019… Deftones performed “Smile” at the Dia De Los Deftones festival. I do have video of it. I’ll post to my videos tonight if anyone has not seen it live. One love for chi

I was in Salem, MA when I first heard Smile, the year before I was playing Hole in the earth and crying but hearing Smile the year after did in fact make me smile; I was so hype for whatever tf Eros was about to be, I really really hope they release what's finished one day!

Seeing them play Smile live and dedicate it to Chi was beautiful. I think all deftones fans agree that we'll get to hear the record some day but who knows, maybe they re-used ideas for later albums. People say that Dallas became Beauty School eventually. I love the sound of the heaviness and atmospheric stuff. Hopefully we get to hear it

No we don’t. We need a bassist with talent, competence and a work ethic lending to a commitment to the band. If Chi’s son possesses these qualities, then great. But it’s not likely a Zoomer will be a good fit for this band.

Thanks for the video- didn’t know a fair amount of what you discussed in this video, outside of Chi and what happened. But long time fan of this band. As for releasing Eros- that’s a hard question to answer. Because for us (fans), the answer is always going to be a resounding yes. But I also think that the truth of the matter, is the music is theirs. It represents a period of time (the last period of time) where those guys were all together doing what they loved. I think it would be unfair to expect them to release the album as it was- and it would be incredibly hard for them to finish it without Chi. Those guys have been asked if they’re going to release that album so many times- I personally would have to believe that at a point, it almost would have been better to just say “no”. Then, if the guys change their mind- cool. If not- respect that too. I guess if I had to choose, I’d say this. If we look in the mirror, and recognize how powerful music is, the emotion it invokes in all of us…..then those of us that have made music with friends together (and even those who haven’t)- should have some sense of how powerful that feeling is amongst the people who made the songs together, created those songs together, and then something happens to one of your closest friends who was a part of that. If I’m being honest, I’d want to hold that close to me and my band mates hearts. For us. Maybe that’s selfish- and so be it. Plus I’d just my opinion, which matters none lol. One thing that’s undeniable though, is that they’re still together, making music- and it’s always been fresh, and relevant to where they’re at in that space in time. Going back to work on that album- or touring around it- I don’t think I’d want to do. Then again- if they hated being asked so much; you’d think they would just say “we’re not going to release it, here’s why, etc. Next question please.” And they seem to be unwilling to shut the door on it. Which I also understand too. Who would want to shut that door. Knowing what’s in the room behind it? Bottom line- I think they should do exactly what they want with it. And to a certain point- so far, I think they kind of have. 🤷‍♂️ thanks again for the video.

Wait, didn't Diamond Eyes come out sometime in 2010? So you mentioned that Chi passed away in 2013. Idk i have to rewatch i guess. I remember that when KNY dropped in 2012, it was amazing and it really seemed to me like every album Deftones ever released was somehow synched with my life. I guess until Gore. The last record they did, just seemed totally off to me. The single was dope but listening to the whole album was a huge disappointment. I can only hope we get one final amazing Deftones album before it's too late. Ohms was not that good.

You know what the real tragedy of Eros is? Is gonna be released unfinished if they don't finish it. Warner owns it, and when these guys pass away this is gonna be the final cash cow that get milked to no end. So either they finish it and release it on their terms for themselves or the Corp releases it as a soulless cash grab

One day a band will arise and refuse to cover one eye. Only then will we finnaly have the heros we need but do not deserve. Im so sick of finding my favorite bands in tons of pictures with one eye covered, signifying their selling of their souls. Then maybe the entire band will cross the finish line together without missing one or more members. Don't act like it's not true. I've been in the industry for long enough to know the facts. And this fact is one that sucks the most.

I think it's about time for EROS to be released, even if it's just as an EP. I think it would go a ways to help them get over their grieving, which to be honest, I think has been over-sentimental and over-done by now. We have to all come to terms with death, but the way that people have gone on and on about Chi Cheng is almost as if they knew him personally. It's not like the death of Cornell, Layne or Weiland. They were actually personally impactful, but Deftones collectively have gone overboard with the Cheng worship. Having said that, I firmly believe they did Sergio wrong by not offering him a permanent position. I think that is a lot to do with them giving the bassists' funds to Cheng's family. Let's be real. It's not like Cheng was on tour when he died. He died without a seatbelt on. Something that kids are taught to wear. So to the original point, releasing EROS will help the band get over it and move on. No use punishing people alive, ie. Sergio, for the acts of those who are dead. The hubris of Chino should be held in check.
