Honestly if I had to gig again, something 60 watts with a 12 inch speaker is perfect. That's more than loud enough for small venues (a good 30 watt seems big enough for some small places) and big places will usually have a sound guy with a PA so your amp will be miced

I got one out of a shop for $550 in upper Michigan. Slapped a 10 band EQ and It is amazing. I will never be getting rid of it.

I had both the 6505 combo and amp with 4x12 a few years ago. They are the best amps I've ever owned and bands like Immortal, Emperor that I love used them.

I got an original block letter last year from guitar center for $400. They said it wasn’t working, but the bozo who owned it before tried to mod it himself and ended up wrecking the speaker out jack. Two hours of work and a little deoxit in the pots, she’s like brand new again.

These are unobtanium in my area. I recently saw a 6505 combo on marketplace for near $1k usd.

I just picked up a second-hand Marshall Mode 4 hybrid amp. It’s tube preamp, solid-state power amp. They’ve retailed for around $700-1000 recently and the only one available on reverb is currently up for $1500, and I snagged mine for $500. If you can get a Mode 4, get it because they work great a low volumes, have a wide variety of sounds, and pair well with any speaker

I’m super lucky to have gotten my 6505 for $250 a few years ago. Definitely was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made

None in my area are that cheap unfortunately but I did pick up the evh 5150 III 2x12 combo for $650 and it was brand new with the footswitch. Now im running a pod go using the 4 cable method just for pedal emulation only and it is a monster 👻

Snagging a 6505+ 112 combo is exactly what I did a little while back. I still need to get the Mojotone BV-30V in there and I've got a Hempback and a Midnight 60 in their boxes as well that I'm really dying to try!

I nabbed a bandit 112 and a 6505 2x12, sounds fantastic, check guitar center for good prices on stuff, they cover a lot of the insane shipping costs. 95 pound amp was like 30 bucks shipping. Poor ups guy XD

Got 2 of them.. run a wet dry setup.. it's sick. More versatile than 1 head and a cab if u ask me and plenty loud

I had one of the original 5150 60W combos and it sounded a lot better than the 5150 head.

Man I remember when you could get an original black letter 5150 for under a grand. My old metal band went through so many of those damned things on the road, we may be responsible for their increase in price due to limiting the supply. He’s absolutely 100% correct though. After a while we switched to running combos so as to get a better mix because the clubs we were playing in were just not really good at capturing the total sonic quality that we wanted live. Those 6505 combos are some serious pieces of equipment, and they will bring down the house just as well as any $2,000 plus amplifier. They are also surprisingly versatile if you know how to dial them in.

I have found a few 112 6505 + combo's chopped and turned into just the 60 watt head.

3 years ago i bought a bugera 6260 120w head for $200. Sounded awesome and worked great. No need to spend $1000+ for essentially the same amp unless you just plain want that specific amp.

My buddy (guitarist in my band) has a 6505 and a mesa 4x12 cab. Absolutely nuts rig.

I had one of those. Sort of. The original owner had converted it into a head. It was an incredible one of a kind amp to me. Stolen out of the backseat of my car one afternoon along with my ESP/LTD EC1000. used to bring my gear to work with me and then go straight to band practice from work. Never did that again. Silver lining is that my cabs weren't in the car. I'd leave the 212 at the practice space and a 112 at home for personal use.

I bought a used 6505 combo about 5 years ago and sawed the top off to make it a head. Turned out really nice. I run it through v30s in a Avatar 4x12

It's true, I've had one for 13 years and still works perfectly. Don't believe the "swap speaker immediately" thing, it sounds awesome as it is. I just had to get fx loop modificated.

I believe the combo is actually a little different from the head. Not just half the power tubes, they are also biased warmer. They're both fixed bias but the heads are famously (infamously?) biased ice cold. Combos warmer which is a subtle but noticeable difference. Also if you really wanted. Just get the combo, and rehouse it into a top control style headshell. You could even, if so motivated to be cheap, chop the bottom of the combo, put in a new bottom, retolex, and presto.. Then you got a head.

My first amp Was that peavy 6505+ combo. I sold it time ago... now I want one. It's that good.

I owned all three versions of the original 5150 models and my favorite was the combo. These days, I only have the 5150II head left and regret getting rid of the combo.

They have come down a bit recently , even the Block Letter... Which is good and a needed grip to reality 😊

I found a 6505+ head at a local pawn shop for $300. I've got a feeling it was stolen because the metal plate behind the grille is missing, and so is the plate with the serial number. For all I know could be a 5150 but it was listed as a 6505. Best deal I ever found

Circuit is the same…the transformers are not. Got a block letter from Nov of 91…not getting rid of it! They are magic!!!

The new 5150 iconics are pretty good for the money too.

I could be wrong, but it's a different amp with the same name. It's 60w so headroom will be different. It will also have more mids, thus falling away from what made the 5150/6505 special. The gain structure may be similar, but that lack of headroom will make it play differently

You should check out the Kartakou COLOSSUS pre-amp.. Its based on a 5150 and a switch to make it a 6505. It sounds amazing.

Yeah the used market online in crazy, I saw someone selling a damaged BC Rich Warlock for almost $500 when brand new they’re about $300. People are too sentimental with their used gear.

6505 and 5150 sound completely different though. The 5150 has more of a crunchiness sound to it as where the 6505 sounds round

Getting Amplitube 5 Max for 100$ and a Behringer UMC204HD for another 100$ seems pretty budget to me tbh.

All the tech comments/OS preferences aside.....nothing worse than going downstairs to my studio with fresh inspiration ready to work and instead am forced to spend hours troubleshooting, repairing, ect....fast forward hours and you're up and running, but burnt out and call it a day. Worse when its a session and the guy is just sitting watching me behind the desk checking/fixing/rebooting-whatever! I have a private studio that only handles a handful of projects so nothing really fiscally at stake, but still-nothing zaps the mojo like being forced to switched to IT mode.....doesn't happen often but man-I felt your pain at "I dont feel like doing a video anymore today....'

I never understood the "block letter" thing. The ONLY difference between it and the later models was the brand of tubes used. After 30 years those tubes are long gone so you're paying a premium for nothing.

But it doesn't look as sick as the head and cab . Sometimes you gotta pay for the look (live shows). Unless you just want the sound( studio) .

All this is true. What he didn't mention is the 60 watt single 12 combo is made in China. As far as I know the circuitry is the same, however some of the components are now Chinese parts. I have a Block Letter full stack I bought new. A friend brought over his 12" combo and we hooked it up to one of the 4-12 cabs and played them side by side. (Note: a full sized head can be dropped to 60 watts by pulling the 2 outside power tubes. It was designed that way so Peavey only had to make one amp, brilliant.) Not the same sound as the original, close but not quite it loses some bottom punch. Still great sound but but that's why US built 5150 and 6505 are more expensive. Remember part of the brown sound is the 4-12 speaker cab with the US original speakers. I've tried Mesa and Marshal cabs with my head they sound good but lack the powerful bottom end and thump. That was the problem with the US built 2-12 combo it lacked the 4-12 cab punch. I know some players with the US twin and set it on a US 4-12 cab, bingo kicking ass. Tech tip: I met the tech that worked with Brown building the prototypes. If you up the power tubes to 6550s and get a little hotter preamp tubes you get more gain (don't go too hot it turns to mud, it comes with 5s, I use 7s) and with 4 6550s you get more watts. But the stock head is advertised at 120 watts and it comes new around 140. That's why everyone says " Damn, this is loud. Peavey didnt want to disappoint. Love your Peavey and it will take care of you.🤟😁👍

I love mine. I do need to swap the speaker, though. It sounds great at low volume, but it washes out when you crank it. I plug into a 4x12 and get good volume and sound from that, but I can still hear the stock speaker. Don't mic it up.

I got an old Digitech 2112 SGS with an analog preamp and two 12ax7 tubes. I recreated my Carvin, VHT, Peavey, Marshall, Mesa Boogie and Fender amps. I haven't looked back .... I even sold off my Eleven Rack.

Gear in general has gotten to levels that are pretty ridiculous. The 5150 III isn't usually quite as much but I guess the earlier ones have some qualities that people are looking for. Not like a Soldano or even a Plexi is very cheap either. Its a bummer.

Randall rg-80 was 249 when I bought one in 2017. They are now 499.

my 5150 only cost me about $300. came with a CGA monitor, model F keyboard, and IBM DOS 1.0.

But! ...... But! It has a different name badge on it so that will have an effect on the tone! 'cause as all 'guitarists' know, the badge is what matters! ;-D

I purchased a 6505 212 in 2010 when my son was hospitalized out of state as a means of keeping myself sane. I was forced to sell it a year or so after he passed away in 2011. Fast forward to 2022. My father passed in 2020, and left me a 1st Generation Hot Rod Deville 212. I sold it to my brother, to keep it in the family, and I went amp shopping. I stopped at a local guitar shop like 5 minutes away from my house, and low and behold…. 2010 6505 212 in the corner. Even better? I still had the serial number written down from my first purchase. It was my old amp. Now it sits proudly and as quiet as I can make it because it still rattles windows on 1.

I bought this combo just before the pandemic as my first tube amp, I needed a 6505+ after using my friend's golden 6505+ 120 head. I'm currently selling it to buy that head from him hahaha
