I first heard Mark O'Connor in Vancouver 1980 . He was with The David Grisman quintet and he opened on guitar for the first two selections and I was completely gobsmacked . Grisman then introduced the band and said ' And now I would like to introduce the five time US fiddle champion Mark O'Connor . ' I fully expected the fiddle player to take a bow but it was Mark who put down his big bad-ass flat top , picked up his violin and proceeded to launch me into a musical Nirvana . The man is a true prodigy

Some of the best pickers have never , and probably never will be seen other than at family reunions, 4th of July picknicks, wedding receptions or local benefit shows. Props to all that made the list, BIG PROPS to the undiscovered.

Gotta have Doc here. "Great" flatpicking doesn't equal most notes per minute. To me, it means best connection with the audience's heart strings.
@steelyman08
@steelyman08 Жыл бұрын
I hear you on that "notes per minute" business. It's taken over in recent times (and not just in the Bluegrass realm). You can't really feel what you're hearing at all. It's no different than speed reading. Quantity over quality.

It's not that well known, but Mark was a "Prodigy" of Flamenco Guitar, which he started learning at age 5. He went on to win a Competition at the age of Nine competing with "College Students". His Mom and Dad were Dance Instructors. When I first Competed against him at Horse Pens 40 in June of 1975, he played 2 tunes almost Note for Note off of Tony Rice's first album, Reuben and John Henry. How he went from there to what he played at Winfield the next September "Dixie Breakdown", "Picking in the wind" etc. is probably the most phenomenal growth in ability I have ever witnessed. While Doc & Norman Blake will always be at the top of my list, Sierra Hull is the most Interesting player. Her ability to "Play Outside the Box" and make it sound "Inside" is "7th Level"!

Mark would be the first to disagree. His Homage to Beethoven's String Quartets speaks for itself. That said, given the Time and Cultural Decline of the period he came up in, His Arc as a Musician/Composer is Unparalleled. And Lucky for us, He is still improving. He's just entering that period when Great Composer's seem to shake off the Dust of the Past and Re-Invent themselves.
